A modular design to increase run time, improve compliance, enhance
safety, and add functionality to a successful inspection instrument.
Objective
Design a battery carrier that will replace GE’s current custom
battery pack used by the USN-60 and Phasor. The carrier must
accept two standard, off-the-shelf, Li-ion batteries and fit
within an existing soft carrying case.
Instrument
The USN-60 and Phasor belong to a
family of products that utilize
ultrasound technology to detect
sub-surface flaws in solid objects.
From concept to printed prototype…
Capacity Compliance & SafetyFunctionality
The existing battery pack
had a capacity of 160 Watt
Hours.
The new battery carrier
will provide capacity for a
total of 199.2 Watt Hours.
The sealed and durable enclosure
protects the batteries from
moisture and dust.
External charging of each battery
protects the instrument from
misuse and charge faults.
Hot swap capability with two
batteries means no downtime.
When one battery is depleted,
another can be inserted to
continue operation.
Longer combined run time and reliable battery performance
means higher customer satisfaction and increased productivity.
Modular Construction
A more flexible design is a more valuable
design.
At any time in the future, GE can decide to
market a single battery variant of the carrier.
Compatibility
The new carrier uses the same
electrical connections as the
old battery, and will fit into
the instrument’s protective
soft case.
