A Brief History To The Following Report
Hello
My Name is RichardBarr, I currently volunteer my time and skills at New Wortley Community
Centre as their Job Coach / Mentor /Advisor, whilstactively looking for paid employment in
the welfareto work sector myself, as at this moment I am also unemployed
This report cameabout when I was approached by Bianca Vartic ( Bi Lingual Interpreter ) who
works for BARCA Leeds.
She informed me that she had quite a few clients that for one reason or another did not
qualify for assistancebut they wanted desperately to work and support themselves.
The barriers they had were mainly English language, and having a current English LanguageCV
and Cover letter to send or show to employers, that would then assistthem with any barriers
they had in approaching UK employers
Some examples of this are -- an employer NOT being able to ask them simple questions about
the work record they have etc in their mother tongues.
To resolvethis issueand any other perceived issue they had, we firstly would compile a CV in
English for them to use,I would then assistmy clients with their lack of knowledge on where
and how to look for work within the UK job market, and any mentoring etc required to
improvetheir confidence etc, as a do not distinguish between culture or languageas I believe
we are all equal, and my driving passion is to help others any way I can.
After a long chat with Bianca, I agreed to donate my time and skills to help her clients on this
very worthwhilepilot project.
As we were very limited on time each week, I also compiled a basic questionnaire that was
then translated back into English to savetime on CV completion (details are in my report)
The following report clearly shows aneedfor this service, and although I did not receive any
payment for this, I was paid back by seeing how much I could help these people and how
encouraged and grateful they were, and that was better than pay as helping is my passion.
My plan would be to get funding so I could give these people more time andalso earna
living for myself , I am also exploring other approaches as my second message- FollowUp To
EasternEuropeanProject will show you , how I can follow my passion to help others anyway I
can, by offering a contracted Job Club within various community groups covering notonly the
Eastern European sector but a standard UK job Club as well ( also see second message)
I hope you enjoy these reports and messages and if you can think of anything I can do to
follow my passion, I would welcome any comments , assistanceor adviceon who I can
approach to make this happen
ENC

Pilot Project Eastern European Job Club

3 x 2 hrs and 1 x 1 hrs + 1 hrs review over 4 weeks time frame.
SUB TOTALS - 7 hrs client time + 1 hrs review time.
TOTAL = 8 hrs

RichardBarr ( Work Coach ) - Bianca Vartic ( Bi Lingual Interpreter )
Preliminary Demographics (TBC)
==========================
Mother Tongues
=============
Romanian , Hungarian , Polish , Italian , Spanish
Attendance
==========
Cross over records show a minimum attendance of 22
Project Format
============
As this was a pilot project, Richard also compiled a basic format fromscratch, & then with the
invaluable input of Bianca ( Bi lingual interpreter ) adjusted this format as needed ,dependant
on clients need.
To speed up this process & maximise the VERY limited time frames , Richard also compiled a
pre attendance questionnaire - in this were Contact details , Key skills , Work record etc , &
whereneeded were then translated frommother tongues into English, to then be added to an
English CV.
Basic project format was as follows, butnot necessarily in this order, also neither was all
formats used with each client, and the approach was adjusted and based on the individuals
need at the time.
CV completion, Job Searchskills , Voluntary options , Education options ( SpokenEnglish
classes ect ) , Guidance & assistance withmoving directly toemployment , Mentoring and
confidence building
K P I & Approximate Results - in% - basedagainst clients attending
======================================================
55 % - Either moved directly into paid employment, or improved employment position by
assistancewegave them with converting currentmother tongue CV, into an English CV .
In somecases , we compiled and started fromscratch an English CV, Showing clients Contact
Details, Key skills, Work Record etc in their country of origin, this then assisted them to
overcomepotential language barriers, as all relevant potential questions an employer may
ask, wereavailable in the CV for the employer to read.
------------------
30% - Also had assistancewith the English CV, & are looking at spoken English classes to
improvetheir language skills, with a view to moving into paid employment in the near future.
-----------------
15% - Are still in the CV compilation stages, & are also using Job Search skills to review
employment options, and are then assisted to tailor the English CV to match, best possible,
the industry they wish to enter.
Total 100%
=========
Conclusions
==========
Based on this preliminary information , there is not only a definite and vital need for this
servicein Leeds, it will also require additional time, & moreresources, as our clients require
more assistancethan was firstly invested and we could give, to fully benefit fromthis concept.
To prove this point, asidefrom the formal projectmeetings, both Bianca and Richard also
invested additional time to assisttheseclients outside of the 8 hour window.
The results of their commitment to this very worthwhilepilot projectare shown above, and
as such, have also proved beyond any doubt that this time was very well spent.
What we require
==============
Funding, & additional resources to make this a paid postfor myself & an interpreter, & to
expand the time frames to maximise the potential of this fantastic project, for the benefit of
,& the overall well being of, the Eastern European Community in Leeds as a whole.
I am sureyou will have found this information useful, and I look forward to your comments
and tips as to what I can do, & where I can go fromhere, to move this fantastic project
forward.
Regards
Richard J Barr

Follow Up To Eastern European Project
================================
Dear All
I hope you enjoyed my pilot projectreport as much as I did being involved in this fantastic
concept, as it was good for my soul to see such good results as well as being beneficial to my
clients.
As a follow up to this , As well as looking for paid employment in this or a similar sector, I am
also working on an another Idea, that is to supply a serviceto local community groups, & run a
Job Club for them on a contacted & self employed basis so many hours a week etc.
As you may or may not know I was self employedfor 11 years before I started my voluntary
projects so self employed holds no issues for me.
So my idea is this -- Instead of paying for one worker full time – is to haveone ( Namely Me !!
- Major Plug Here LOL) as I am looking for paid employment, to come in for a few hours a
week and help any way I can.
As we all know, the cut backs have devastated the Job Clubs UK wide, & these are a Vital
Local Asset ThatIs Needed.
This Ideacovers both a Standard & European Job Clubs - as my passion is to help everyone
regardless, as I do not distinguish on – community or language limitations etc & I believe we
are all equal.
This role would not only be making CVs, Job Search etc, but it will also expand into other roles.
I already knew, & I have had this confirmed in my Work Coaches Role, that this Role naturally
expands out to mentor / guidance / support/ and positive input that encourages someone to
have a better outlook ingeneral on life.
So If you would be able to reply to me with any advice or tips on who I could contact locally,
(Leeds/Surrounding Areas) or how I can makethis fantastic idea of mine happen, this would
be very welcome.
As I have this burning passionto helpothers & you know what they say, always followyour
passions, youwill find my contact details on my main link inpage and on the report
If you cannot think of anything at this moment to adviseme, I also respect& understand this,
and I still value you all as my contacts regardless.
I look forward to your replies -- Kind Regards --- Rick
