WhenI firststartedworkingat Bankof America Iwas a contractor and I was giventhe
MYBANKOFAMERICA.comproject. Afterseveral monthsIwasinvitedtojointhe Bankasa F.T.E. (Full
time employee. My jobwas to make sure that the projectwas completed. Iwas responsible forthe n+
tierwebserverandassociatedapplications,firewall rules,networkengineering,database,etc. Inshort I
was responsible foreverythingexceptcontent. Mybankofamerica.com alsoinvolved3rdparty
connectionsonbothprivate andpublicnetworks. It became obviousthatIneededhelpaswe hadto
build,install,configure,andtroubleshootredundantsites. Ithenhiredandmanagedtwootherpeople.
Aftera numberof years, inthisposition, Iwasaskedto jointhe proxyteam.

2. In the beginning,the Bankwas usingCheckpointfirewallsasproxies. Igot to be quite proficientwith
Checkpointdoingthingsthatthe restof my teammembers thoughtimpossible. My scriptingskills
became valuable andwasthe go-toperson whenever someonehadscriptingproblems. Afterseveral
monthsitbecame obviousthatthe Checkpointproxieswere notable tohandle the load andthe
machinesthatCheckpoint wasrunningonwere aging. Soan upgrade toNetworkAppliance was
dictated. Thisupgrade wasa challenge formanyreasons. Nextcame a complete change inproxy
authenticationdue toanAuditfinding. Thischange affectedeverypersonthatbrowsedthe internetas
well asall of the B2B connections. The total numberof people affected wasabout250,000. We were
able to accomplishall of these changeswithabout1-2% requiringsome sortof manual assistance.
Several monthswentbyandBluecoatacquiredNetcache makingthe Netcache proxiesobsolete. We
reactedto thisunexpectedobsolescence byupgradingall the proxiestoBluecoat. Againthisaffectedall
employeesthatusedthe Internet(250,000 people). Thisupgrade occurredalmosttotallywithout
incident.
Due to budgetcutbacks, subsequentre-org,andoutsourcing,Iwasplacedinthe Unix Securityand
Remediationteam. Itwashere that my scriptingexpertisebecame invaluable. AsIhad experience with
all flavorsof Unix (Solaris,HPUX,Linux,andAIX) writingportablescripts torunon all platforms tofix
securityissueswasanon-issue. Itwas on thisteamthat I resolvedthousandsof Unix securityissues
weekly byusingatoolscalledESM(ElectronicScanandreMediator). Scriptshadto be peerreveiewed
and aftera fewsubmissionsthe ESMteam gave me carte blanche torun any scriptthat I wrote. Aftera
fewmonthsI was promotedtoTeam Manager and hired3 additional peopledue tothe huge increase in
the numberof Audit findings. The Auditteamwasfamousforincreasingscope andthiswasno
exception. I alsomentoredthe people Ihired inavarietyof things. Scriptingwasone of them.
Duringthat time,Ialso uncoveredseveral other thenunknown securityissuesthataffectedalarge
percentage of servers. All issueswere resolvedwithoutincident. Ididfindone large securityissue that
affectednearlyall of the 15,000+ Unix/Linux serversatthe Bank. Afterremediatingall of the servers,I
documentedthe issue andpresentedittothe SecurityServicesTeamandUnix BuildTeams. Theyadded
that fix totheirbuildprocessand to the Build documentationtopreventfurtherpromulgation. Due toa
re-org,I wastransferredtoProjectRewind.
ProjectRewindwasanin-sourcingproject. Networksupportwas outsourcedafew yearsprior,anddue
to inherentproblemsassociatedwithoutsourcing,the Bankbroughtmanyof the previously outsourced
positionsback. I wason thisteamfor a few years. I cannot commentfurtheronmydutiesduringthis
time due to security andotherconcerns.
Due to anotherre-org, I was transferredto the ProjectManagementgroup. My dutywas to manage
projectsinceptiontocompletion. ProjectManagementisnotinalignmentwithmycareergoalsso I am
lookingfora newposition.
