Pauline Lee can do almost anything she sets her mind to. The
adopted daughter of immigrant parents, she was singing Willie
Nelson and Dolly Parton songs before she could speak English.
Now, Lee is sharing the stage with Canadian musical theatre actor
Jeff Hylsop, best known for the title role in the Canadian travelling
production of The Phantom of the Opera, and Richard Margison, an
acclaimed Canadian tenor who performs regularly in many of the
world’s leading opera houses.“I mean, these people are world re-
nowned,”says Lee,“like Jeff Hylsop is known as the most important
Phantom and I get to work with him. I’m just really blessed and in
awe of this life, and that I get to live it.”
Her vocal range spans four octaves: Alto, Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano.
She sings opera, pop, rock, blues, gospel, country and electronic
music and has performed on CMT, Global Country Star Search and
Global Country spotlight. After performing in high school and
university choirs, Lee decided to pursue her dreams by applying to
the Alberta College Conservatory of Music, where she was accept-
ed and classically trained under teacher and mentor Alice Wright.
Since then she has played local in independent films, commercials,
a role in the 2002 Michael Dowse film FUBAR 2, and as a Disney
Princesses at the St. Albert Children’s Festival. She has studied
everything from jet skiing to mixed martial arts.“I think of myself as
a jack of all trades,”she says.“If you asked my friends, they’d tell you
I’m always trying to learn something new. My friends always joke
that I’m like a girl MacGyver and it’s pretty accurate.”
She is also working on her first screenplay, which she hopes to have
in production in the coming months.“I wrote it in four months. I
was at a retreat with some friends and I shared an idea that I had
in my head about something and my friend said‘what you shared
with us, is that a treatment?’”she says.“And I was like‘what?’and
she told me‘go write all of that down, what you told us.’So, I did,
and I decided to write it myself, and set a goal that by Christmas,
I would have written the entire screenplay, so there I was, on
December 25 at two in the morning, typing scene 117, the end. It
was crazy.”

Her screenplay, a romantic comedy, is still in its infant stages, but
these days she is too busy working with the Elite Performing Arts
Company to think about it. She takes to the stage this month as
part of the cast of Curtain Up: A Broadway Musical Revue, at the
Myer Horowitz Theatre. The inaugural performance takes place
in Edmonton, featuring some of the best loved musical numbers
from Annie, Oliver, Les Miserable, Mary Poppins, among others.“I
was very lucky to be one of the chosen ones (for this project). It has
just been an amazing experience,”Lee says.“[Producer] Tony James
has created this wonderful environment for us to learn in, and he’s
bringing in these professionals and never in my wildest dreams did
I think I’d be working with these people.”
