• Ephesus was famous for the Temple of Artemis. (Diana)
• The Gospel of John and 1 Corinthians may have been written from there.
• It was an important commercial centre (Harbour)
• Destroyed by earthquakes. (Almost all of the churches)
• Paul preached in the streets of Ephesus. (AD 52-54)
• Mary, the mother of Jesus and St. Luke spent their last days here.
• Apostle John is buried there in the Basilica of St. John

she had lost her virginity in the Dionysian festival.
• Asclepius was the god of healing, and the Asclepion was their equivalent of a
hospital. – they will write the testimony in white stone pillars

14. The Great Altar of Pergamon is considered to be one of the
greatest surviving monuments from antiquity. Now located in the
Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, the altar is thought by
many scholars to be the “throne of Satan,” referred to by the
prophet John in the Book of Revelations.

houses.
• Home of orator Zeno whose children became kings and queens.
• Lukewarm water – hot mineral from Hierapolis and cold spring water from Colossae
– not good for drinking.
