BitTorrent is the name of a peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol, and is
the name of a free software implementation of that protocol. The protocol was originally designed and created by programmer Bram Cohen, and is now maintained by BitTorrent Inc. BitTorrent is designed to distribute large amounts of data widely without incurring the corresponding consumption in costly server and bandwidth resources. Cache Logic suggests that BitTorrent traffic accounts for 55% of all traffic on the Internet, while other sources are skeptical. The original BitTorrent client was written in Python. Its source code, as of version has been released under the BitTorrent Open Source License, which is a modified version of the Jabber Open Source License. There are numerous compatible clients, written in a variety of programming languages, and running on a variety of computing platforms.

3. BitTorrent is a communication protocol for the
practice of peer-to-peer(p2p) file sharing that is
used to distribute large amount of data over the
Internet.
Torrent is a small text file that contains
information about specific(associated) content, file
and folder names within the content and about
tracker(s).
What is BitTorrent?
4. Bram Cohen best known as the author of the
peer-to-peer BitTorrent protocol.
He is also the co-founder of Code-Con and
organizer of the San-Francisco Bay Area P2P
meeting.
Cohen unveiled his ideas at the first
Code-Con Conference in 2002.
It remains an event for those seeking
information about new directions in software,
though BitTorrent continues to lay claim to the title of
‘the most famous presentation’ regarding hacking &
latest technology.

5. A User goes to a Torrent search site to search for the content.
When the User finds desired content, the User downloads the
.torrent extension file(or magnetic link) associated with the
content.
When the torrent(or magnetic link) is opened in a BitTorrent
client, transfer of the associated content begins.
When the download is begun with a torrent, the BitTorrent client
communicates to a tracker through the information
contained in the .torrent file.
A tracker essentially serves as a communications hub for this
swarm of individuals, helping them find each other.
How does BitTorrent work?
6. Torrent Search Site: A site that indexes torrent files and their associated
contents.
BitTorrent Client: A program that opens torrent files to transfer the
content associated with the torrent.
Seeds: Those who have 100% of the torrent’s associated content and are
uploading to peers(leechers).
Peers: Those who have less than 100% of the content associated with the
torrent. They download from seeds and other peers and upload to other
peers.
Leechers: Those who download 100% of a torrent’s associated content,
but do not upload back at least 100% of the content.
Magnetic Link: These are links similar to torrent(but are not files),but
contain only information on the content not file or folder or tracker.
Swarm: The group of people active on a single torrent.
Definitions of common
BitTorrent terms.
7. On a public domain site, obtain .torrent file. for example:
http://bt.LOR.net
http://bt.HarryPotter.com

14. Advantages of BitTorrent over
Traditional Downloading Methods.
BITTORRENT Traditional Downloading Methods
1. More the number of Users active
on a Torrent, greater is the
downloading speed for each User.
More the number of Users active on a
download, lesser the speed.
2. More popular the content, greater
the download speed.
More Users seeking the content, the less
the download speed for each User.
3. Bit Torrent search sites do not store
files, only bits of data.
Unlike BitTorrent the entire file is stored
at one place.
4. Safer than other downloading
techniques as a file is distributed into
chunks.
File is distributed into a whole piece.
5. If any of bit during transfer
becomes corrupt, it will be
rejected & replaced by
uncorrupted one.
Risk of distribution of malware with the
download is extremely high.
15. Torrent File is a list of trackers(directions to a file)
which does not prove that one has actually
downloaded the file.
Torrent is not equal to piracy.
Torrent protocol is just a transmission mean for users
to download files more easily. It’s the content(not the
protocol) that makes the act illegal.
As long as the item is copyright protected and you do
not own it, then downloading it(for free) via torrent is
illegal.
Is Torrent downloading a
crime???
16. YIFY Torrents was the best movie torrent website available on the
Internet.
Usually torrent websites have lot to offer like softwares, mp3,
eBooks, etc. but YIFY torrent was specifically for movie lovers.
Moreover the unique thing was that all movies available on YIFY
had HD prints of 1080p and 720p, available at a size of around 1.8
GB.
But, recently on Oct 20,2015 it was taken down because of
copyright issues.
It had more than a million unique visitors every day.
After the website was taken down permanently, there are a lot of
websites claiming the name of YIFY but they are just trying to cash
on the goodwill of the name.

17. As of 2013, BitTorrent has 15-27 million concurrent users at any time of
the day. Based on this figure, the total number of monthly BitTorrent
users can be estimated at more than a quarter of a billion.
As of February 2013, BitTorrent was responsible for 3.35% of all
worldwide bandwidth, more than half of the 6% of total bandwidth
dedicated to file sharing.
Facebook uses BitTorrent to distribute updates to Facebook servers.
Twitter uses BitTorrent to distribute updates to Twitter servers.
The Internet Archive added BitTorrent to its file download options for
over 1.3 million existing files, and all newly uploaded files, in August
2012 this method is the fastest means of downloading media from the
Archive.
In early 2015, AT&T estimates that BitTorrent represents 20% of all
broadband traffic.
