What are you studying and what year of university are you starting in September?
I am going into my third year at the Schulich School of Business at York University in Toronto. I am completing
my Bachelor of Business Administration, with a specialization in operations management and finance.
Why did you apply to intern at BMO?
I am not sure exactly what I want to do after graduation and the BMO Student Internship Program (BSIP) offers
lots of opportunities in different areas.
Have you interned with BMO before this summer?
This is my first summer with BMO. I hope to come back next year.
Briefly describe what team/group you worked for, and your role
I am a Business Analyst with Deployment Services. Our team specializes in project database deliveries for
applications, supporting and deploying Microsoft SQL and Oracle databases for Chief Information Officer’s (CIO)
from U.S. P&C, Canadian P&C Banking, Corporate Finance Division, Channels and Wealth Management. I support
Database Administrators (DBAs). I attend a daily change meeting with various groups within technology. We
follow the change management process closely for all production activities. If there are any changes made in
our projects that require approvals, I relay this to the appropriate DBA. I also created a customer service survey
for the CIOs to see how they feel about our services.
What was the most valuable thing you learned during your summer?
I learned the importance of putting myself out there in order to make connections.
What was the most challenging part of your job?
This happened when I was learning about my team and what they did. From the outside, the bank seems less
complex, but there is so much that goes into a running this organization. I’m glad I have more insight now.
What was the highlight of your time with BMO?
The BSIP emphasizes a work life balance and encourages interns to be involved in all the events. I attended
the majority of events, including volunteering for BMO Days of Caring, I went to Chester Lee Park in
Scarborough, Ontario, and gardened. For BSIP Days of Caring, I assembled prevention kits for the AIDS
Committee of Toronto. I attended every BSIP Career Event to get more insight into each line of business to find
out about the opportunities at BMO. I joined the BSIP social committee; have made friends in different areas in
the bank. We have an upcoming trivia night that hopefully will be fun and help everyone make connections.
What was it like having a mentor?
My mentor Alykhan Jaffer is a Senior Manager in Network Services. We met biweekly; he gave me insight into
my job and also introduced me to other fields that I had an interest in. It was a rewarding experience and I
recommend it to any intern. My manager Joanna Ogunleye, Senior Manager, Deployment Services,
empowered me to work with other teams to learn about their groups. I really enjoyed working with Senior
Manager Patricia Stowe and her Business Management team; I will be able to apply that learning to what I am
studying in school.
