• JOSE MONTSERRATMACEDA (1917-2004)
• He was born in Manila, Jan.17,1917. Studied Music at the Academy of Music in
Manila, earnd doctorate degree in Ethnomusicology from UCLA,USA. He used the
music of the indigenous tribe of Mindoro. He was the first Filipino Avant-Garde
composer. He served as a professor of piano and musicology at College of Music in UP.
He died in Manila on May 5, 2004

2. LUCRESIA KASILAG (1918-2008) National Artist for Music
She was born in San Fernando, La Union on August 31, 1918.
Studied Music at PWU, Manila. Obtained her Master’s degree in
NY,USA; Known for incorporating indigenous Filipino instruments into
orchestral productions. A dean of Music and Fine Arts in PWU,
President of CCP and musical director of the Bayanihan Dance
Company , Chairman of the Asian Composers’ League and League of
Filipino Composers. Wrote more than 200 musical works. She passed
away in Manila on August 2008

3. JERRY DADAP
(Born 1935,Nov. 5)
He was the first Filipino to conduct his own works at the Cornegie Recital Hall In
NY,USA. Studied Composition at the Mannes College of Music in NY,USA. Taught
composition at the Sta.Isabel College, Manila

4. FR. MANUEL P. MARAMBA,
OSB- Born 1936, July 4.
• He is one of the most accomplished musicians and liturgists in the Philippines
during the 2nd half of the 2oth century. Youngest finalist to participate in
NAMCYA piano competition. He took his BM-Piano in UST. Master’s Degree in
Yale Univ. USA. A faculty member in UST and Sta.Isabel College.

• He completed his BM degree at UP College of Music. Finished his
master’s degree in Indiana Univ. USA and Ethnomusicology in Univ. of
Illinois, USA. His compositional styles features chromaticsm, music seria,
electronic components with combined with Indigenous Phil. Music

National Artist for Music
An Avant-Garde composer and conductor for band and chorus. He was born on Feb.19,1942 in
Morong, Rizal. He obtained his Teacher’s Diploma in Composition and Conducting at the UP
Conservatory of Music. Master’s degree in Composition from UP and Diploma in Music Composition
in Berlin Germany. Doctorate in Music Composition from Yale Univ. School of Music, USA. He died on
Sept. 19,2014.

7. JOSEFINO “CHINO” JAVIER
TOLEDO (Born 1959, March 6)
Is a recognized figure in the Asian Contemporary Art Music Scene.
Received his Master’s degree in Music from Cleveland Institute of Music,
USA.
Among his awards are: Ten Outstanding Young Man
(TOYM);International Award for Arts, Civitella Ranieri Fellowship in Italy,
Chancellor Awards for Outstanding Musical Works, UP. A music
professor in UP College of Music, founding music director of the Metro
Manila Community Orchestra, UP Festival Orchestra, Crosswave
Symphony Orchestra.
WORKS: Music for Chorus, orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo instrument
and theater music.
8. JONAS BAES (Born 1961)
Born in Los Baños, Laguna. He enrolled at the College of Music in UP. Researched
on the music of the Iraya-Mangyan people of Mindoro. Studied in Freiburg,
Germany. He is known for writing music utilizing unorthodox musical
instruments such as bean-pod rattles, leaves, iron-nail chimes, various Asian
instruments such as bamboo scrapers, flutes. Associate professor in Composition
na d Theory, Ethnomusicologist, cultural Activist and writer. Received the Gawad
Chancellor para sa Pinakamahusay na Mananaliksik (Hall of Fame)
