Summary:
Pumpkins are a symbol of fall and children love this orange fruit. From the bumpy outer shells to
their insides, pumpkins offer numerous opportunities for investigating using all of the senses.
They can be carved, cooked, touched, shaken, rolled, smelled, and tasted. During this time of
the year, moms and grandmas create yummy tasty treats.
Can you name some things we can cook with pumpkin?
2. Procedure:
Sit the children on the carpet. May sure the children are sitting like superstars. Eyes are
tracking, seating tall; the mouth is quiet, ears are listening, hands are still, legs are crossed and
silent. I will read the book “The Duck and the Goose find a Pumpkin” by Tad Hills. Teacher
leads class discussion by posing the following questions during the reading. What are the duck
and goose looking for? Where are they looking for the pumpkin? After reading the book, I would
ask the children again what some things we can cook with pumpkin are. After they share their
answers, I will tell them today we will make a special make believe “Pumpkin Pie.”
We will mix the shaving cream, glue, food coloring and pumpkin pie spice. Children will be
working in groups combining all the materials. After the consistency is thick, they will spread it
on a paper plate to simulate a pumpkin pie.
Assessment:
Children will complete “Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin Comprehension Assessment
worksheet.
