Skateboarding came out in the 1958. It was
mostly popular with teenagers. It was known
as sidewalk surfing. On August 17th 1993
Thomas Welsh was issued the first steerable
skateboard. The ollie is the most basic trick
in skateboarding. It is when you jump on a
skateboard. The ollie was invented by Allan
Ollie Gelfand. In 1973 urethane wheels was
invented.
The 1980’s
Skaters made their own wooden ramps in their
backyards to skate on. Street skating
became more popular also. Streetskating is
skating on a street doing flip tricks. Skaters
started wearing baggy clothes. The ollie has
come into its own as the foundation for
80% of street tricks and about 60% of
vert tricks, with the focus being on
more technical and larger tricks.

The X-Games came out in the 1990s and made
skateboarding even more popular. The
impact of media coverage on
skateboarding has moved it from an
underground sport to a spectator sport
over the last four years. Skateparks
have also given boost to the skating
community in many towns. The many
different ramps, pipes and bowls
present at these parks have led to a
change in equipment.
