In Simcoe Muskoka in 2017, the leading causes of
emergency visit, by ICD-10 chapter, among infants less
than one year were: diseases of respiratory system,
symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical/lab findings, and
infectious or parasitic diseases, which accounted for about
two-thirds of all visits.

During the same time period, among children one to nine years of age, diseases of the
respiratory system and injuries & poisonings were the leading causes of emergency visit,
accounting for more than half of all visits. The most common form of respiratory illnesses
among children under 10 years of age were acute upper respiratory illnesses.
Injuries & poisonings was the leading cause of emergency visit among youth and
adolescents (between 10 and 19 years of age) in Simcoe Muskoka, accounting for more
than one-third of all emergency visits in 2017.

hospitalization, by ICD-10 chapter, among infants less than
one year were: perinatal conditions, diseases of respiratory
system and congenital anomalies, which accounted for
about three-quarters of all hospitalizations for this age-
group. During the same time period, among children one to
nine years of age, diseases of the respiratory system were
the leading cause of hospitalization. The most common
causes of respiratory illness hospitalizations among
children one to nine years were asthma and pneumonia.

9. Leading Causes of Deaths
In Simcoe Muskoka between 2011 and 2015, there were
111 deaths among infants less than one year of age. The
leading causes of death among infants were perinatal
conditions and congenital anomalies, which accounted
nearly 90% of all deaths. Deaths among children between
one and nine years of age were rare, with only 27 recorded
in all of Simcoe Muskoka over this five year period. During
the same five year time interval the leading causes of
deaths among youth (10 to 19 years) were intentional self-
harm (32%) and transport accidents (19%).
