Ultimate Field Trip 2014
Every year BP’s Ultimate Field Trip offers undergraduate
and Master’s students the opportunity to come up with
practical, technologically innovative solutions for the energy
challenges we all face. Conducted over several months and
multiple stages, students from around the world compete
to spend two weeks experiencing life at one of BP’s global
operations.
The 2014 competition will take successful teams to Alaska and Chicago, Illinois.
First though, they’ll test their science, engineering, marketing and team working
skills on a real-world energy challenge. Along the way, they’ll be quizzed by senior
BP judges, supported by industry experts and exposed to problems they’ll have
never encountered before.
It’s a competition like no other, with the trip of a lifetime waiting at the end of it.
For bright, driven students it’s also an amazing opportunity to gain exposure to BP
while learning more about the energy challenges we all face.

The first leg of the Ultimate Field
Trip saw the three teams meet in
the UK capital. No one knew quite
what to expect but once they arrived,
it was down to business. The first
few days of training helped the
three teams get to know each other
while at the same allowing them
to gain an understanding of what
it takes to grow sustainably and
responsibly in the oil and gas industry.
All of the national winners met with
senior members of the business to
showcase their solutions before they
headed off to Norway and Shetland.
The trip wrapped up back in London
with a scenic ride on the iconic
London Eye.

In Norway the teams were brought
up to speed on the scale of the
North Sea operations and their
history before having the chance to
see how an asset is managed with
a visit to an onshore control room.
And they didn’t just observe: they
also had the opportunity to drive a
remote operated vehicle on the sea
bed. Outside BP, the teams visited
the Norwegian Petroleum Museum
and explored Stavanger with a
30km bike ride, kayaking and a hike
up Pulpit Rock, a 600ft outcrop
with an amazing view.

It was a short trip from Norway to
the north of Scotland, where the
teams got to experience the huge
scale of the Sullom Voe terminal. As
well as getting hands-on experience
of impressive technology, their
time in Shetland saw them enjoy a
few rounds of golf, pilot a tugboat
and take in the local food, scenery
and wildlife. The winners then
moved on to Aberdeen, where they
learned more about BP’s North
Sea operations and commitment to
health, safety and environment.
Throughout the trip Omari,
Azam, Ravier, Eric, Hugh,
Nick, Akash and Michael
got to meet BP people of
all levels. These included
graduate Challengers and
senior managers as well
as external suppliers – all
of whom were happy to
take time to welcome and
talk to the teams. Being
taken seriously and having
their questions answered
openly and honestly came
as a surprise to some of the
team members, and helped
them realise that they too
could become experts in
their field.

7. The 2014 challenge
Get involved
In running their operations, energy companies consume large amounts of
energy. Your team’s challenge will be to identify an innovative solution that will
significantly reduce energy consumption and be implemented by 2025, with
the potential to scale across the energy industry. This could apply anywhere
from point of capture to point of sale of energy products, and potentially even
create a new product stream.
The Ultimate Field Trip 2014 opens on 1st October 2013. If you want to challenge
your abilities on a real-world problem and go on the trip of a lifetime, visit the
