More than 5,500 production employees are now “Shipbuilder Strong.” The yard-wide initiative to
have all production employees complete the six-session, 18-month Shipbuilder Strong program is
progressing. Shipbuilder Strong is a behavioral-based safety program that improves personal health
and well-being. Trainers and coaches teach exercise routines specific to the employee’s job and
physical ability, while providing insight as to why and how these exercises improve quality of life.
Manufacturing, Virginia-class Submarine program, and CVN 79 crews have completed the first
session with CVN 65, CVN 72, CVN 78, Supply Chain Management and Operations programs in
process. Once the program is complete, workers receive the Shipbuilder Strong qualification.
With safety being a number one priority at Newport News Shipbuilding, the exercises allow
workers to develop better movement patterns, body mechanics, and material handling techniques.
Results from this program have shown more than half the crews had safety improvements or
maintained their “zero injury” status. The shipyard has also built time into the work day to enable
employees to stretch.
“I would definitely recommend the stretching program because it helps prevent injuries especially
when you’re wearing a hard hat and working in tight spaces every day,” said Shipbuilder Benjamin
Waycaster (X11).
On June 1, Newport News Shipbuilding Talent
Acquisition (O20) and Production and
Maintenance Skills Training (O26) welcomed
local active duty U.S. Navy service members
who serve as military career counselors to
the shipyard for the first “Military Immersion
Experience.”

Twenty-eight students from Booker T. Washington Middle
School were recognized during the GEMS year-end
ceremony June 4.
Celebrating GEMS
Career Pathways held a year-end ceremony for
Girls with Engineering Minds in Shipbuilding
(GEMS) June 4 at Booker T. Washington Middle
School. The event recognized 28 students with
certificates of achievements for completing the
STEM (science, technology, engineering and
math) program designed to introduce girls to
careers in engineering through activities and
mentorship.
“This ceremony was a tribute to the dedication
these girls made to stay after school to learn
about STEM career opportunities at Newport
News Shipbuilding,” said GEMS lead, Stephanie
White (O20). “The shipyard engineering
mentors and I are very proud of our girls.”
During the ceremony, Jennifer Boykin, vice
president of Engineering and Design and GEMS
executive sponsor, presented each girl an E&D
division coin to express her gratitude for the girls’
commitment to the program. Career Pathways
will continue GEMS next school year at Booker
T. Washington Middle School and will also start a
GEMS group at Crittenden Middle School.

Foreman Glenn LeBlanc (X10) agrees. “Daily stretching
has made me feel better prepared to not only do my job at
the shipyard, but even with chores at home.”
Most production employees and foremen are expected to
complete the first session by the end of July.

Mulherin
Speaks at
L.E.A.R.N.
Safety, inclusion,
diversity and
engagement were a few
of the topics discussed
at the L.E.A.R.N event June 4. Newport News
Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin spoke
to over 200 employees on the state of the
company which was followed by a question
and answer session. Mulherin stressed the
importance of safety and commended the
shipyard for receiving OSHA’s VPP “Star” status
for safety excellence for another five years.
Mulherin also focused on the importance of
inclusion and diversity in the workplace.
“People are the key to our success. We’re
asking you for ideas so that we can improve
and work toward a more diverse and inclusive
work environment,” Mulherin said. “Everyone
should feel like a part of the team and that
your opinion matters.” Other topics discussed
were camera phones, parking, and the new HII
Family Health Center expected to open this fall.
“I liked hearing that what I am concerned with
is on his radar, such as camera phones and
parking,” said Sonia Gopal (E86). She also
enjoyed being able to speak with Mulherin
one-on-one to learn about his career at the
Shipyard.
Philip Jennings (E17) said, “I liked how
several things I’ve worked on or know about,
such as CiWP (Common integrated Work
Package) and ORP (Ohio Replacement Program),
were brought up. It’s nice to know what I care
about, the executives of the company care
about too.”
“Our goal for this pilot program was to educate the counselors on the diverse career opportuni-
ties available at the shipyard. We’re dedicated to hiring exceptional employees, and many military
veterans are just that,” said Fred Andy, Talent Acquisition representative and military outreach
specialist (O20).
During the four-day program, the nine counselors participated in hands-on training with
engineering and craftsmen trades, met with senior leaders, toured The Apprentice School and
learned about the NNS career application process. Jeffrica Key, manager of Product Training
(O26), added, “Trades Training was honored to provide this unique opportunity to experience each
of the core trades in a practical way to the participants.”
Senior Chief Cally Pinson said, “As a Navy counselor, I feel I must change my approach of how I solicit
post-Navy opportunities to my transitioning sailors. Before the Military Immersion
Experience, I would have promoted NNS only to those with predominantly mechanical skills. Now,
my eyes are opened and I realize I would be cheating or short-changing my sailors if I didn’t
encourage all of them to at least explore all the opportunities offered at the shipyard.”

On June 22, Newport News Shipbuilding will hold a ceremony to mark the beginning
of construction of a new manufacturing facility in the North Yard. The new facility will
support Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier construction, and current and future submarine
construction.
It will be built where the Areva facility was going to be built, before funding for that project ended.
Prior to construction beginning early this summer, 500 parking spaces will be relocated to other
areas in the North Yard. There will be no loss of employee parking as a result of this construction.

Thanks to Shipbuilders Involved
in USS Barry Dry Dock Effort
The USS Barry entered the floating dry dock on Dec. 18, 2014, for
emergent repairs and maintenance to various ship systems. Newport
News Shipbuilding was contracted by BAE Systems of Norfolk,
Virginia to provide the floating dry dock and temporary systems
in order for BAE to accomplish their work. NNS was challenged to
accomplish the planning, material procurement, naval architecture
services, keel-block setup, temporary systems design and installation
within a 16-day window. The USS Barry undocked in February. Special
thanks to all shipbuilders involved in the dry docking projects.
