AGRIS is the International Information System for
Agricultural Science and Technology. AGRIS was
created in 1974 by Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) of United Nations. In 1975, it became
operational.
AGRIS is a Global Public Domain Database
bibliographic records in English, French, German,
Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Russian and Portuguese
Languages on Agricultural Science and Technology.
AGRIS has been serving users from developed and
developing countries through facilitating access to
knowledge in Agriculture Science and Technology.

AGRIS is a Mission-Oriented information system
committed to Collect, Manage and Disseminate
Agricultural Literary Information around the globe.
AGRIS main aim is to build an information system in the
field of Agriculture Science and Technology and related
subjects. It is a collaborative network of agricultural
institutions of the world.
The Subject areas of the AGRIS includes various aspects of
Agriculture including Forestry, Food, Environment,
Animal Sciences, Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries, Human
Nutrition and all other aspects related to Agriculture
Sciences from participating countries all over the world.

AGRIS offers 9,390,683 bibliographic records
produced by more than 400 data providers
(research centers, academic institutions,
publishers, governmental bodies, development
programmes, international and national
organizations) from 144 countries.
More than 4 lakh agricultural and research
professionals worldwide access AGRIS resources
each month. While AGRIS is predominantly a
bibliographic database, it also provides full text
links to about 2 million of its records.

AGRIS is essential for knowing the current
development and finding literature about Food,
Agriculture, Environmental Sciences and related to
Social Sciences also.
It is used to pursuit of an academic endeavor,
research and background studies for policy
makers.
It is also used to obtain an overview of what has

AGRIS main objective is to improve access and
exchange of Information related to Agricultural
Research.
To provide a comprehensive agricultural information
among the nation and to avoid wasteful duplication of
work in the field.
To meeting the international needs of developing nations
and help them to trained their Scientific and Technical
Personnel.

AGROVOC
AGROVOC is a controlled vocabulary covering all areas of
interest of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of
the United Nations including Food, Nutrition, Agriculture,
fisheries, forestry and Environment etc. It is a thesaurus
jointly produced by FAO and the Commission of European
Communities (CEC) is a controlled structured vocabulary of
Agricultural terminology constructed according to the
UNISIST guidelines for the establishment and the
development of monolingual and multi-lingual thesaurus.
AGROVOC is maintained by FAO in English, French and
Spanish Languages. AGROVOC is constantly updated
(through the online editing platform VocBench), and
regularly made accessible to users in various formats.

It is Monthly Bibliography in English which deals
with the subject covered by AGRIS.
AGRIS CD-ROM
CD-ROM Technology is thought to provide an
excellent solution for the retrieval for centre's which
do not have easy access to an online database.

• AGRIS FORESTRY CD-ROM are available on
AGRIS and its Semiannually updates are also
available.

WEB AGRIS
The new Web AGRIS version 2.0 was released to robust
Information Management System have integrated
numerous updates, errors fixes and new features.
Web AGRIS is a complete Multi-lingual web-based
system for distributed data Input, Processing and
Dissemination(through Internet or on CD-ROM) of
Agricultural bibliographic Information.
Web AGRIS also allows to link to documents that are
available in Electronic Format.
15. AGRIS IN INDIA
India is the Agricultural based Country, which plays an
important role in India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),
for the development of Agriculture British government
established Indian Council of Agricultural Research
(ICAR) on recommendation of Royal Commission
Agriculture in 1929. The Council has established so
many Institutions, State Agricultural Universities and
Krishi Vigyan Kendras etc.

The India has been providing inputs to the Agriculture
Research Information Centre (ARIC) of Indian Council
of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Database since 1975.
References provided by ARIC from the Indian
Periodicals and other literature in the field of
agricultural and allied sciences became available to the
users all over the world through AGRIS.

Technology(AGRIS) is a Multi-lingual Bibliographic
database that connects users directly to a rich collection
of Research and Worldwide technical Information on
Food and Agriculture.
The birth of AGRIS has been to facilitate our entire
society which involved in Agricultural Science and
Technology. Since the beginning AGRIS has been set up
a fully Computerized Information System based on
INIS, and it has grown into one of the successful and
comprehensive Information System on the Agricultural
Science and Technology.
