3. Footnote
• Footnote is made up with two words.
‘Foot’+’Note’
Foot means “bottom part” and note means “informal letter” or
“written message” or “pay attention”
• So footnote is a additional piece of information placed at a
bottom of a page.
4. Definition of Footnotes
• “Footnote is a note which is printed at the bottom of page that
gives extra information about something that has been written
on the same page.”
• “An explanatory or comment at the bottom of a page, referring
to a specific part of the text on the same page.”
• “A note of reference, explanation, or comment usually
placed below or footer part of the page”
5. Essential points to writing footnotes
1. One sentence should have only one footnote.
2. 4-5 footnotes are sufficient for one page.
3. Footnotes should be reliable.
4. We should prefer to use of footnotes than endnotes.
6. Why using Footnote?
In text footnotes are used for
1. Indicate the source of facts.
2. Explain opinion or quotation.
3. Provided additional knowledge or information.
4. Giving references.
7. Types of Footnotes
There are two types of footnotes.
1. Content footnotes
2. Copyright permission footnotes.
1. Content footnotes:- content footnote is use to provide additional information
that simplifies to given content in the text.
2. Copyright permission footnotes :- It used to give credit to the source for long
quotation table or graphs and other lengthy
information within a text.
3.Reference footnotes:- It used to give reference of the given text.

1. APA(American Psychological Association)
2. MLA(Modern Language Association) and
3. Chicago Manual.
