1. Williamandthe Fire Extinguisher
Williamhadtodo some Mathematicssumsthat evening.He hadnotbeenable toconcentrate whenhisteacher,rather
hisleastfavorite teacherwasteachinghimlongdivisionsums!He hadalreadytorna couple of pages fromhis
Mathematicsbook!
He wascursinghis bestfriendTrevin.TrevinhadbeenkickingWilliam frombehind forthe firsthalf of the Mathematics
periodandfor the otherhalf of the MathematicsperiodTrevorhadbeentryingtostuff little piecesof paperinside
William’sshirt!
Williamhadwaitedpatientlyforthe periodtoend.Assoonasthe periodwasover,he hadchasedTrevinaroundthe
school.The chase had endedina deadlycombat!
Theyhad returnedtothe class,shirtstorn, Trevin’sshirthadbeensoakedwithwaterbecause the deadlycombathad
takenplace inthe boy’sbathroomonthe secondfloor.Trevinhadfoundhimself onthe flooracouple of timesthus
soakinghisshirtwithwater.William’sshirtseemedtohave acouple of Ink stainsbecause of a penthat Trevinhad
broughtwithhimself.The penhadleakedInkonWilliam’sshirt.
A little boyhadcome to boyhad come to use the toilet;beenafraidonseeingwhatwashappeninghadrushedoutside
yelling,
“Teachertwo aiya’sare fighting”
Thishad broughtan abrupt endto the deadlycombat!Inthe nextcouple of minutestheyhadtuckedtheirshirtsandrun
as fast theirlegswouldcarrythemto theirclassroom!
Nowtheywere sittingintheirclassroom,luckilyforthemthe teacherhadnotyet come. Williamhada smile onhisface;
he was thinkingaboutthe day’sproceedings.
The smile wouldnotlastlongandfor the rest of the periodhe wouldhave tostare at the Fire Extinguisherthathadbeen
fixedinthe corridorinfrontof hisclassroom. The Fire Extinguisherhadbeenfixedrecently!All hisfriendswere inaweof
the Fire Extinguisherespeciallyhimself andhisbestfriendTrevin.There hadbeensomanytimeswhentheyhad
expressedtheiropinionsabouthowtouse the Fire Extinguisher.
Williamhadexpressedhisviewsonthe matter,
“It shootswater,it’slike the gardenhose.”
Trevinhadhoweverexpressedadifferentideaonthe whole matter.The matterforthe momentwastemporarily
unsolvedandsuchunsolvedmatterswouldnotremainunsolvedforlong!
Theyhad gone and gone andquestionedone of theirteachersonthe matter.He hadtoldWilliamandTrevorthat as
soona fire broke outor as soonas somebodytouchedthe Fire Extinguisher,itwouldbeepanalarm.Thiswasall that
wouldhappenaccordingtotheirteacher.Trevinhadwhole heartedlybelievedeverywordthathisteacherhadtold
thembut Williamhadnot.He knewthere wassomethingfishyaboutthe story!He knew somethingexcitingwould
happenif theyknewhowtouse the Fire Extinguisher!
He had somany thingsonhismindabout the followingwhenhisMathematicsteacherdemandforhisMathematics
writingbooktodo the corrections.He had not done the longdivisionsthathisteacherhadaskedhimto do.He knewhe
wouldbe takendownto the principal.He didn’tcare!He hatedMathematics!He hatedlongdivisions!Andhe virtually
hatednumbers!
Williamswasaskedtostandoutside withhisMathematicswritingbook.Verysoonhe wasjoinedbyTrevinagain
carryinghis Mathematicswritingbookandina couple of minutesbyRaj and AngelobothcarryingtheirMathematics
writingbooksaswell!
2. Williamwantedtotalkaboutthe Fire Extinguisher,Itwasa topicthat the boys wouldtalkabouteveryday.Different
boyscame upwithdifferentexplanations.Williamwhowasthe leaderwithinhisclasscame upwithhisopinionabout
the Fire Extinguishershootingwater.Thisforthe momentwasthe onlyexplanation.
Thus Williambegantalkingtofriendsinthe mannerof a commanderaddressinghistroops!Williamsonlyintentionwas
to have all three of these friendsonthe journeytounravel the mysteryof the Fire Extinguisher. He wantedtoconvince
Raj and Angelo.He knewTrevinwoulddefinitelybe there withhim.
“I have a plan,what our teachertolduscannot be accepted,”he said
“We have to findoutaboutthisFire Extinguisher,”he continued
“I have an uncle that knowsaboutthiskindof thing,I will askhimabout it andwe will see forourselvesabouthowthis
thingsworks,”concludedWilliam
As the bell rangand theirteachercame outside totake the fourboys alongwithherto the principal.
Theyhad beenseverelyadvisedbythe principal butnothingof whathe had saidhad gone into the little minds
especiallytothe mindof William.The onlythingsonWilliamsmindatthe momentwasto findoutabouthowthe Fire
Extinguisherworked.
The followingmorningWilliamwoke upwithoutanytrouble.WakingWilliamwasone of the mostdifficulttasksinhis
mother’sdailyroutine.Evenhismotherwasquite surprisedwhenhe gothimself readywithoutanytrouble.
“I’m sure he’sgrowingupnow,he’snotmischievousanymore,”she remarkedtoherself.
WhenWilliamgotto school he hadclassesfor the firstfourperiodsandhe had no wayof talkingtohisfriends.He had
howeverpassedalittle note tohisfriendssaying
I knowhowto use the F.E!
Andwhenthe interval bell rang andwhen all hisfriendshadrushedoutsidetoplayrunand catch. These fourhad stayed
back.
Williamwhocouldnotholdbackthe conversationanymore screamedinexcitement
“I knowhowto use the Fire Extinguisher,myUncle toldme how to,”
“You pull andyou press,”hisuncle hadtoldhimlastevening!
“But what aboutthe alarm?’Trevinquestioned.
“What alarm.That’s all a lie.”Was Williamsreply
“We will staybackafterschool today andfindout anyway,Ihave a plan,”continuedWilliam
“Raj will be nearthe office tocheckif the principal comesout.Angelowill be nearthe Library!
“Raj will passa signal toAngelo if there issomethingandAngelowill passthe signal tous.I and Trevinwill be nearthe
Fire Extinguisherandthenthe secondtime,we will keepwatchandyoucan be at the Fire Extinguisher”SaidWilliam
The plan accordingto Williamwasflawlessand thingswentasplanneduntilWilliamhadaccidentallypressedFire
ExtinguisheraimingitdownTrevinneck.The nextinstantTrevinhadgrabbedholdof the Fire Extinguisherandstarted
aimingitat Williamwhowastryingto dodge!Trevincontinuouslykept missinghisaimandkepthittingthe wallsand
virtually everythingelseinhisvicinityexceptWilliam!
Verysoontheyhad beenjoinedbyRaj andAngeloandtheystartedtoaim the Fire Extinguisherinall directionsaswell.
Thingsdidnot seem toogoodat the momentandif theycontinuedin thismannerthere wasa highpossibilitythattheir
principal wouldhearthe noise andturnupat the place!
3. Williamheardfootsteps!Williamwasthe firsttohearit.As soonas he heard the footstepshe knew whose footsteps
theywere.
One lookat hisfriends.One lookatthe place was enoughtotell hisgoodsensesthathe wasin deeptrouble.There was
a kindof dustaroundhim.He couldsee that nearlyhalf the corridorwasfilledwiththisparticulardust.He lookedathis
classroom and againhe could see thathisclass roomwas againfilledwiththisdust.He lookedathisfriends,theywere
hardlyrecognizable.
He grabbedthe handsof Trevin.Signaledtothe othertwothat there wassomethingwrong.
Whisperedintothe earsof hisfriends.
“Ground floor,bathroom”
Andthe nextmomentcarryingtheirbagsoverthe shoulderasfastas lightning.Theyhaddisappearedfromthe scene!
Williamhada lotof doubtsonthe matter butfor the momenthe justwantedto getout fromthe scene of crime.He
knewif theywouldgetoutof school unnoticedthenthere wouldbe agoodpossibilitythattheywouldnotgetcaught.
Theywere inthe Bathroom inthe groundfloorand for the momenttheywere washingthemselvesbecausethe Fi re
Extinguisherseemedtohave leftastrange duston them.
Andfor the momentWilliamwasbusythinkingabouthow theywouldescape unnoticed!
