2. Its discovery in Hahnemann’s clinic
Suppressions as causes which exacerbate
pathology
Considerations of the basis of theory of psora
The Hahnemannian miasm as
diathesis,dyscrasia or predisposition-as
presented in his fundamental works,the
ORGANON and the CHRONIC DISEASES
3. .
After erecting the doctrinal monument of
homoeopathy with its corresponding curative
technique,observed in his own practice
The results ,while relatively satisfactory and
clearly preferable and superior to those of old
school medicine still left a large question
mark
It was regarding the relapses or the
emergence of the new diseased states in the
apparently cured patients
4. That is the latter persisted in a condition of
relatively good health but had a tendency to
manifest periodic or successive syndromes or
pathological states with in a certain similarity
or relationship with one another
The really sick patients were seen to pass
through periodic or states of illness which
appeared to the superficial observer but in
which careful examination disclosed a nexus
of identity , a characteristic connecting link
5. .
Thus ,the apparently different illness presented
by the sick person ,as judged by his biopathology
,were infact linked by a background which
constituted a predispostion to a characteristic
form in respect both to dysfunctions and to the
lesions themselves.
This predispostion wheather constitutional or
merely a constant aspect of organic man which
persists in the form of its expression, was called
by Hahnemann MIASM OR CHRONIC DISEASE
6. Hahnemann writes
The faithfully practised percepts of
homoeopathic method of cure,as it is taught
in my own writings and those of my disciples
,have hitherto manifested to all men and in a
very striking and decisive manner ,their
natural advantage both in regard to acute
diseases as well as in epidemics and sporadic
fevers
7. But there remained the chronic disease which
afflict humanity and the number of which
continued to be immensely large
Its even greater today
The manner in which those diseases had been
treated by old school physicians has only
served to increase the sufferings of such
patients
8. By employing a quantity of disgusting
mixtures, compounded by the apothecary out of
large doses of violent medicinal substances or by
using all sorts of baths, pretended anodynes and
sedatives and especially those everlasting
purgatives ,leeches,blood lettings and methods
of starvation
And other nameless diseases being much worse
and much more incurable than original natural
disease, was substituted in place of previous
disturbance
9. Nothing was done except additional
sufferings consequent upon the use of
improper and noxious medicines
Homoeopathic practitioners by the percepts
in the writings, advices given in lectures and
conversations did more good by treatment
than all previously known so called methods
of cure had been able to accomplish
10. The patient will consider himself cured when
he gets better for the difficulties previous to
homoeopathic treatment with the improved
state of health which he now enjoyed
But then a few excesses at table, a cold,
approach of unusually rough damp or stormy
weather, fall of season, violent bodily or
mental effort(concussion,melancholy,fright
etc) were often sufficient in an enfeebled
system to cause one or more of the former
ailments to reappear after they have been
conquered for a time
11. They were often accompanied by a series of
new symptoms which may not have denoted
any more danger than the former symptoms
did that had yielded to the homoeopathic
treatment, but more difficult to cure and
therefore so much more inveterate
The homoeopath acted as if this were a new
illness(ASWAS DONE BEFORETHEREWAS
KNOWLEDGE OFTHE MIASMS BEFORE
HAHNEMANN MADETHIS DOCTRINE
KNOWN)
12. Against these new symptoms the homoeopathic
physician employed again with tolerable success
the remedy which acted more homoeopathically
among the then known drugs
And the condition of the patient was again
improved for a time
When symptoms reappear again the remedy
which helped first ,second time less perfectly and
still less so on being given third time
13. Under these circumstances ,the remedy
which had appeared most homoeopathic
often produced new symptoms and despite a
correct mode of life on part of patients, they
yielded but scantily and imperfectly to the
best adapted remedies and often even
remained when the cure was checked by
above mentioned external(or mental)
influences
14. .
Some joyous occurrence, or an external
condition of circumstances improved by fortune,
a pleasant journey, a favourable climate produce
a remarkable pause of shorter or longer duration
in the disease of the patient, during which the
homoeopath might consider himself as fairly
recovered; even the patient might consider
himself to be lucky.
But a favourable pause would never be of a
longer duration and repeated returns of the
complaints in the end left even the best selected
homoeopathic remedies then known in most
appropriate doses, were less effective. At last
served as weak palliatives.
15. After repeated attempts to conquer the disease,
which appeared in a form always somewhat
changed, residual complaints appeared.
Thus there followed varying complaints more
troublesome, more threatening even when the
medicine was correct, mode of living was correct
with a punctual observations of directions.
The chronic disease could despite all the efforts,
be but little delayed in its progress by the
homoeopathic physician and grew worse year to
year.
16. Their beginning was promising, the
continuation less favourable and the outcome
hopeless.
Despite these failures ,the doctrine itself has
been and will ever be founded upon the
unshakeable pillars of truth
Why then were less favourable or even
unfavourable results obtained by
homoeopathy in the treatment of chronic
disease?
17. Acute diseases provided they were not fatal from
their beginning were not only considerably
alleviated by correctly chosen homoeopathic
remedies ,but even promptly and thoroughly cured
by means of theVIS MEDICATRIX OFTHE
ORGANISM
Why should thisVIS MEDICATRIXof the organism
whose object is to restore the integrity of the
organism ,and to be indefatiguably active in
completing the recovery from virulent acute
diseases, have been insufficient to effect a durable
cure of those chronic maladies even when aided by
most accurately selected homoeopathic medicines
18. What obstacle stood in the way?
This led to the discovery of nature of chronic
diseases
In the years 1816 and 1817, day and night; and
behold the giver of all things permitted me
within this space of time to gradually solve
this sublime problem through unremitting
thought, faithful observation and most
accurate observations done for the welfare of
the community.
19. I kept my great effort both from public and
from my own disciples not on account of the
ingratitude which I have frequently
experienced
Its improper to speak about things half
accomplished
Not until the year 1827 did I communicate the
most important part of my discoveries
relative to the treatment of chronic disease to
two of my most deserving disciples
20. I did so in order to avoid the danger of seeing
my discoveries lost to mankind
I observed that non veneral chronic diseases
even after having been repeatedly and
successfully removed by the then known
homoeopathic remedies continually
reappeared in a more or less modified form
,and with a yearly increase of disagreeable
symptoms
21. This proved that the phenomena which
appeared to constitute the ostensible disease
was a MERE FRAGMENT OF MUCH MORE
DEEP-SEATED PRIMITIVE EVIL ,THE GREAT
EXTENDT OF WHICH MIGHT BE INFERRED
FROMTHE NEW SYMPTOMS WHICH
CONTINUEDTO APPEAR FROMTIMETOTIME
THIS SHOWED METHATTHE HOMOEOPATHIC
PRACTITIONER OUGHT NOTTOTREAT
DISEASES OFTHIS KIND AS SEPEREATE AND
COMPLETELY DEVELOPED MALADIES
22. I became convinced that the first condition of
finding out one or more homoeopathic
medicines which should cover all the symptoms
characterizing the whole disturbance was to
discover all the ailments and symptoms inherant
in the unknown primitive malady
The medicine being found out ,the physician
would be able to conquer and to completely
extinguish the whole disease, together with its
successively appearing groups of symptoms
23. This primitive disease evidently owed its
existance to some CHRONIC MIASM
As soon as it had reached a certain height it
never yielded to the simple action of a robust
constitution ,or to the best regulated diet or
mode of life
On the contrary it grew worse from year to year
to the end of life ,gradually assuming different
and more dangerous symptoms
This is the case with every chronic miasmatic
disease
24. For instance ,the veneral bubo when it has
become a syhilitic diseases on account of its
not having been cured from within by
mercury,its specific
Syphilis never becomes extinct of itself
It increases from year to year and assumes
new and more dangerous symptoms to the
end of life
25. .
These circumstances ,coupled with the fact that
psoric eruptions which had been removed by evil
practices or by some other causes were evidently
followed in otherwise healthy person by chronic
ailments having the like or similar symptoms
This has been observed by myself and others in
infinite number of cases
This left me no doubt about the internal enemy I
had to combat in my medical treatment
This internal enemy I shall designate by the
general term PSORA
26. In most of the patients Hahnemann verified a
past history of psora
Psora is the common wellspring of many
chronic diseases which seem to differ in
essence but ultimately are one and the same
In Europe as well as in other continents we
have been able to discover BUTTHREE
CHRONIC MIASM which cause diseases
manifesting themselves by local symptoms
and in which more chronic ailments originate
27. .
These miasms are syphilis(veneral chancre)
sycosis and then psora which forms the basis of
itch
Though psora is the oldest, most universal and
most pernicious chronic miasmatic disease yet it
has been misapprehended more than any other
For 1000’s of years it has tortured and disfigured
mankind and during last centuries it has become
cause of those thousands of incredibly different
,a/c as well as c/c non veneral diseases with
which more and more persons becomes infected
28. .
Psora is just as tedious as syphilis and sycosis
Unless it is cured ,it last until the last breath of
the longest life not even the robust constitution
will be able to anilhilate and extinguish psora
The secondary symptoms of psora are
innumerable
When the chief symptom which is the external
eruption has been suppressed it produces
secondary c/c ailments
Physicians are not able to discover the host and
the secondary diseases remains incurable as had
been the original maladywith its eruption
existing upon skin
29. This is made worse by a quantity of wrong
remedies
When psoric poison was yet reduced to its
formidable external substitute leprosy there
were much less nervous affections,painful
ailments,spasms ,cancerous ulcers
adventitious formations consumptions than
there are now
30. .
Modern physicians –every psoric eruption is a mere
local affection of skin, with which organism has
nothing to do
Health restored when eruption is removed
Such horrible untruths were not only taught
formerly but even taught and practiced even now
Itch removed with external applications-and assert
that disease is cured –patient dismissed without
least regard for secondary ailments which will
manifest later as result of psoric reaction
The deceived patient will come again with
unavoidable consequence of former treatment like
consumption,hysteria
,gout,asthma,blindness,paralysis etc etc
Hahnemann gives countless quotes for this
31. He says
These few cases are sufficient to convince the
intelligent observer that the itch together with its
varieties are the external vicarious symptoms of an
internal disease affecting whole organism and psora
is the most pernicious of the c/c miasms
No reasonable and inquiring physician will dare to
assert that the itch ,tinea are mere cutaneous
diseases which may unhesitatingly be removed from
the skin by external applications ,because the
organism is not affected by them
This kind of treatment is most pernicious ,most
infamous and most unpardonable practice –should
be guilty of themselves
32. .
In acute miamatic disease the virus penetrates
and invades the whole organism through portal
of entry and which are characterized by 3 stages
1. The moment of infection
2. The period required for the organism to be
penetrated by the sickness
3. The manifestation of its development in the
whole organism
Scabious exanthema reduces psora to silence as
external chancre does for internalsyphilis
When this is suppressed by unnatural tehniques
,changes generated-internal affection
33. When suppressed miasm leaves its latent form and
its manifestaton surge to the fore with intensity
when stimulated by environmental and emotional
conditions
Miasm will become manifest when there is similarity
between external morbific noxa and patients
diseased condition or predisposition
The concept of miasm as contagious virus seems
very appropriate to the minds which accept the
materialistic criterion of traditional medicine
Such concept is easy to understand and accept being
in agreement with microbial theory and urge to find
materia pecans which once destroyed or eliminated
causes patients health to be restored
34. .
This simple mode of reasoning is initially
adopted in medicine by every beginner
,confronted with suffering ,man seeks a cause
yet almost never recognizes it inside himself and
blames various circumstances like chill ,food etc
and when microbes appear ..ah ha
According to this medicines fundamental
objective is merely to recognize the microbes
corresponding to each sickness and then to
destroy them
But what appears to be an unimpeachable
solution turned into new chimera
35. Microbial theory with its firm foundations and
demonstrations left a gigantic stamp on
medicine and great majority of homoeopaths
couldnot escape this hallucination
Many prof easily concluded microbes
constitute what he called a/c diseases and
viruses the c/c miasms(MLTyler)
36. But pathological reality must be
understood differently
Latent psora is absolutely propitious to
contagion with scabies just as sycosis is for
gonorrhoea and syphilis to chancrous disease
The miasm as diathesis,constitutional
pathology or morbific condition is defined by
Hahnemann
One can lead bearable life for many years
without any mishap and suffer from
symptoms of latent psora like cold clammy
hands dry hair and will not pay attention
believing he is healthy
37. Only attentive person can understand it and
when he grows older he will start developing
symptoms from exiting causes from
allopathic medicine improperly given or
sedentary life in warm roomdeath of beloved
relatives arouses psora from its lethargic
state generating serious and inverterate
symptoms which gets aggravated without
any remissions to most terrible degree
38. .
With respect to sycosis Hahnemann states
This is the MIASM WHICH ENGENDERSTHE
SMALLEST NUMBER OF CHRONIC
SICKNESSES,ITS MANIFESTATIONS BEING
SEEN ONLY FROMTIMETOTIME
Sickness appears somedays or weeks after
impure coitus and is usually followed by
gonorrhoeal dripping-treated by external
applications-supresses it temporarily
He adds that when sycosis is deprived of local
symptom which ISTHE SIGN OF INTERNAL
DISEASE it must take another and more serious
form as a secondary disease
39. Regarding syphilis
This is the case with every c/c miasmatic disease-
for instance ,the veneral bubo ,when it has
become the syphilitic disease on account of not
having been cured from within by mercury, its
specific
Syphilis never becomes extinct of itself ,inspite
of best mode of life and the robustest
constitution, and increases from year to year and
assumes new and more dangerous symptoms to
end of life
40. Last edition of organon
Reference to miasm as diatheses or
constitutional diseases(78,82,203,208)
In aph 5
Useful to the physician in assisting him to
cure are particulars of
1. The most probable exiting cause of acute
disease
2. Most significant points in the story of c/c
disease for discovering fundamental cause
41. Most illustrative and precise paragraph
relating to miasm aph 204
Aph 206-misams are called dyscrasia and
hahnemann calls them diathesis
Thus the concept of diathesis dyscrasia or
constitutional pathology persist in
hahnemanns brilliant conception of chronic
diseases
42. First hahnemannian concept needed to
understand and derive all possible benefit from
the miasmatic doctrine is that health, sickness
and cure are dynamic processes
For many years the incomparable doctrine was
forgotten,underestimated and contested
because no technique had been devised to reveal
its clinical usefulness and adapt it to progress
attained and attainable in biology especially as it
relates to medicine
43. The mexican homoeopathic association
founded in 1960 has been working
uninterruptedly expounding diffusing and
occationally debating the investigations and
the studies of hahnemanns miasm which I
started in 1940 and whose first appearance
was in my doctoral thesis THE NATURAL
HEALING FORCEAND HOMOEOPATHY
44. Before publishing the fruits of these efforts
we must indicate what is needed to fully
understand the doctrine of c/c disesases in all
its valuable and far reaching aspects
