5. What is universal design?
Universal design is the process of creating
products that are accessible to people with a wide
range of abilities.
Or
Basically
Universal design is about designing system.

6. Examples of universal design are many:
Example:
A professor's website is designed so that it is
accessible to everyone, including students who are
blind and using text-to-speech software.

7. Main goal:
Universal design means planning to build
physical, learning and work environments so that they
are usable by a wide range of people, regardless of
age, size or disability status.

8. The 7 principles of Universal design were developed in 1997 by working
group of product designer, engineers and environmental design
researchers. The purpose of these principles is to guide the design of
environment, products and communications.
Principles
Equitable to use
Flexibility in Use
Simple and Intuitive Use
Perceptible Information
Tolerance for error
Low Physical Effort
Size and Space for Approach and Use

9. The design is useful and marketable to the user having multiple abilities.
Guideline:
Provide same means of use for all the users: identical whenever possible;
Equivalent when not.
Provide privacy, security, and safety , that should be equally available to
all users.
Make the design that is attractive for all users and developed their
interest in it.
Marketed to all people with their different mental and physical
capacities.
Its main purpose is to make design that will be useful by wide range of
the people, including their different physical and mental capacities as test
users.

10. The design accommodates a wide range of individual
preferences and abilities.
Guideline:
Provide choice in methods of use(when design put
into use it can be capable to use in different ways).
Facilitate the user's accuracy .
Provide adaptability to user's pace(adapt to way one
person want to use it or has to use it due to different
abilities).

11. Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user's
experience, knowledge, language skills, or current
concentration level.
Guideline
Eliminate complexity.
How your design for someone to pick up and start using it
without instruction.
Be consistent with user expectations and intuition.
It will be easy to use wide range of literacy and language
skills.
Provide feedback during and after task completion.
It will be easy to use for wide range of people.

12. The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user,
regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities
Guideline
Design give the information to user that is enough to make it efficient.
Use different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile) for presentation of essential
information.
Provide adequate contrast between essential information and its
surroundings.
Differentiate elements in ways that can be described (i.e., make it easy to
give instructions or directions).
5/14/2019 12
13. The design minimizes hazards and the adverse
consequences of accidental or unintended actions.
Guideline
Provide warnings of risks/dangers and errors.
Provide fail safe features.
Discourage unconscious action in tasks that require
vigilance.
Arrange. elements to minimize risks and errors
5/14/2019 13
14. The design can be used efficiently and
comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue.
Guideline
Allow user to maintain a neutral body
position.
Use reasonable operating forces.
Minimize repetitive actions.
Minimize sustained physical effort.
5/14/2019 14
15. Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach,
manipulation, and use regardless of user's body size, posture,
or mobility.
Guideline
Provide a clear line of sight to important elements for any
seated or standing user.
Make reach to all components comfortable for any seated or
standing user.
Accommodate variations in hand and grip size.
Provide adequate space for the use of assistive devices or
personal assistance.
5/14/2019 15
16. Create design that is attractive.
User does need much knowledge and
experience for it.
User does not need to prove it self as legal
user , but design must provide the security.
The design can be usable by people.
