This document discusses functional bowel disorder, also known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is characterized by intermittent and chronic abdominal pain associated with changes in bowel habits. It affects females more than males and commonly affects people during young adulthood. While the exact causes are unknown, theories involve the gut-brain axis, genetic and neurohormonal factors, altered GI motility, bacterial overgrowth, and visceral hypersensitivity. The clinical picture involves abdominal pain related to defecation and changes in stool frequency and consistency. Diagnosis is based on history and examination and can be made using criteria like Manning criteria which looks at links between pain and bowel movements.
