2. INTRODUCTION:
๏ถ Sea grass are flowering plants that grow entirely under water.
๏ถ Which grow in marine environment.
๏ถ Light is required for the plants to make food through photosynthesis.
๏ถ 15 species of sea grass found indian coastline
๏ถ Sea grass is a terrestrial plants in that they have leaves, flower,
seeds, roots and connective tissues.
3. ๏ถ It provide habitats and food for a diversity of marine life comparable
to that of coral reefs.
๏ถ Most species undergo submarine pollination and complete their life
cycle under water.
๏ถ They function as important carbon sinks.
๏ถ The seeds which are dispersed by both biotic and abiotic agents are
produced under water.
6. LIFE CYCLE OF SEA GRASS:
๏ถ it is also reproduced by asexual clonal growth and sexual
reproduction.
๏ถ Asexual clonal growth: similar to grassess on land, seagrass shoots
are connected under ground by a network of large root like
structures called rhizomes.
๏ถ The rhizomes can spread under the sediment and send up new
shoots.
7.
8. INTERTIDAL AND SUBTIDAL SEA GRASS:
Intertidal plants:
๏ถ High excess irradiance and desiccation stress
๏ถ Smaller shoots
๏ถ More carotenoids
๏ถ High desiccation tolerance and recovery ability
๏ถ Higher density
๏ถ Narrower leaf width
10. Subtidal plants:
๏ถ Lower irradiance and submergence
๏ถ Larger shoots
๏ถ Less carotenoids
๏ถ Lower desiccation tolerance and recovery ability
๏ถ Lower density
๏ถ Width leaf width
11. SEA GRASS MICROBIOME:
๏ถ It is most important intra connected process.
๏ถ It is also related to the process in the nitron, carbon and sulfur cycle.
๏ถ Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) determines the photo
synthetic activity of the sea grass plant.
๏ถ It determines how much of carbon dioxide is exuded from the leaves
and root system, and how much of oxygen is transported into the
rhizosphere.
๏ถ Oxygen transportation into the rhizosphere alters the redox condition
in the rhizosphere, it from surrounding sediments that are usually
anoxic and sulfidic.
13. APPLICATION:
๏ถ Seagrass have been used for a medical purposes.
Eg: fever and skin disease, muscle pain, wounds, stomach problems.
๏ถ It provide the shelter for many organisms and commercially
important prawn and fish species.
๏ถ It help to increase the clarity and quality of water.
