PROFILE:
A Packaging Development Manager with a naturally creative approach to innovative problem solving and idea generation
that is combined with a wide range of practical experience in the FMCG industry generally and the Food Industry in
particular.
Able to work equally on own initiative and as an active and constructive part of a team, leadership skills include managing,
developing and motivating small teams to achieve objectives.
Despite retiring from full time employment by 2008, interest continues to achieve & maintain high standards in the delivery of
novel consumer driven packaging products, either freelance within an organisation, on contract, or as a consultant via my

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS:
• Established and managed an interactive Global Network of Packaging Developers within Unilever's ambient
savoury foods business.
• Advised on and heavily contributed towards Best Practice Procedures, Processes & Ways of Working within
Unilever’s European Packaging community.
• Instrumental in the identifying, evaluating and recommending rationalisation of packaging material specifications
with the potential to deliver annual savings of € 2.7M from a spend of € 28M per year for flexible pouches.
• Developed and sourced a unique pack format for Rocket™ chilled meal kits.
• Created, developed and implemented the innovative “Pyramid™ Tea Bag” caddy carton format, and designed
and managed production of a unique triangular "door drop" sampler carton, including the development of bespoke
packaging machinery for both.
• Supervised the production start up of new production line equipment in UK & overseas locations.

2005 -2007 European Foods Packaging Development Manager
Assisting the European Foods Packaging Director during extensive team restructuring and the relocation of
many of Unilever’s European Foods R&D Packaging community.
Responsibilities and Achievements:
• Providing support in the management of Project Handovers and Knowledge Transfer
• Administrating the redistribution of equipment and facilities.
• Harmonising Packaging Processes & Procedures between teams and within R&D
• Contributed to the inclusion and presentation of foods packaging related topics within a cross
category 5 day R&D Packaging Foundation training course.
• Created and rolled out a 2 day training course – Packaging for Non Packaging Developers.
2002 -2005 Global Savoury Packaging Development Manager
Demands upon European resource to support global packaging issues prompted this dedicated role within the
Crawley packaging group, allied with the Savoury Global Technical Centre in Heilbronn (Germany).
Responsibilities and Achievements:
• Establishment of a global network of ambient savoury product packaging managers and the
facilitation of regular sharing of project issues and learning’s between network members.
• Provision of a “Help Desk” facility for the global savoury packaging community, responding to
questions and requests for advice successfully and in a timely manner, drawing upon own
knowledge and experience as well as upon colleagues & associates as appropriate.
• Supporting Global Training and Workshop sessions with packaging inputs, including direct
participation in conferences in Brazil & Mexico.
• Point of contact for Environmental issues related to the development, selection and use of
packaging materials & formats.
2. 1980 -2007 UNILEVER FOODS continued
2000 -2002 European Savoury Packaging Development Team Leader
After acquisition of Bestfoods & the Knorr™ brand, a Crawley based packaging group expanded into a
European role, working closely with European Category Marketeers located in the UK Innovation Centre.
Responsibilities and Achievements:
• Established close working relationships with European flexibles buyers and their technical advisors
to provide input and assist the implementation of significant cost savings by harmonising material
structures and converters. Instrumental in identifying savings of € 2.7M per year via a portfolio of
specifications satisfying current & foreseen product, machine & market needs for flexible pouches.
• Designed and implemented a spreadsheet based resource management tool for the Packaging
Group, providing overviews to the Group Leader of resource issues and project status.
• Developed and rolled out a new Up-Side-Down dressings bottle and closure for filling on modified
lines in two European sites and initially launched in five countries.
• Provide packaging input to the development of a new format of chilled complete meal ingredient
kits targeted at city business commuters. "Rocket™" meals were launched within just 6 months &
then rolled out to London office lobby and main line station kiosk outlets. Innovations included
individual ingredients being uniquely collated within a net sleeve, on-line printed product &
ingredient labelling and the supply of an insulating drawstring carry bag.
• Managing a team of two, responsible for providing input to European and Local UK NPD
programmes and packaging specifications for dehydrated products.
1997- 2000 Savoury Packaging Development Team Leader
Development of packaging for Unilever’s UK ambient savoury products was consolidated within an Innovation
Centre in Crawley (West Sussex) together with Product, Process and Market Development Groups.
Responsibilities and Achievements:
• Optimisation, rationalisation and specification management of flexible laminates used for
dehydrated pouched products. Harmonising with Dutch sourcing units and providing technical
advice to the European materials project manger.
• Pack format developed to combine wrapped noodle blocks and a wet sauce sachet able to run on
an existing end load carton line resulted in a novel "Batchelors East-West Noodles™" front
opening carton and necessitated trouble shooting the noodle block wrapping operation in Thailand.
• Deputised in the responsibility for environmental packaging issues, including preparation for and
implementation of Essential Requirements legislation.
• Supervised assistants and trainees to variously handle administrative details, procedures and
manage small projects.
1987-1997 Packaging Development Manager
Selected and promoted to head up newly created Packaging Development function within Brooke Bond Oxo
to assist in the progressive merge with Batchelors Foods and latterly Van den Burgh divisions of Unilever.
Responsibilities and Achievements:
• Created, developed & implemented the radically new tea bag carton format for the "Pyramid™"
tea bag, as a member of a multi-disciplinary 5 year project team that involved an investment in
excess of £15m in totally new filling and packing lines. The format was a Packaging Innovation
Award winner for the Sales & Marketing category in 1996.
• Developed heat sealable teabag paper with branded logo’s able to run on existing bag making
lines, retaining machineability, sift out and infusion performance.
• Developed & implemented a new range of square cross sectioned glass jars for instant tea,
retaining compatibility with existing coffee jar filling lines.
• Built close collaboration with key packaging material and machine suppliers to both enable
development projects and to provide the stimulus for new concepts.
• Established and managed accurate Bills of Materials for all Beverages SKU’s within MRPII
systems, including interfacing with the developing specifications database.
• Supervised a seconded Packaging Manager from central Unilever for 2 years, establishing the
Pkg. Dev. function & creating a Packaging Specifications database to enable the documentation of
Brooke Bond’s pkg. materials complying with BS5750.
1980 -1987 Project Engineer
Joining the Project Engineering department of Brooke Bond Oxo Ltd in Croydon, 5 years prior to acquisition
by Unilever, provided an invaluable transition between local UK based and multinational managed business.
Responsibilities & Achievements:
• Project managed installation & commissioning of a CEKA™ packing line for 500g PG loose tea.
• Trials and evaluation of machine downtime monitoring equipment.
• Project managed the design & installation of a complete coffee bag manufacturing & packing line.
• Variety of engineering projects inc Process plant overhaul, procurement of replacement & new pkg
m/c’s, involving the specification, purchase & installation of concentrate liquid syrup filling line.
3. 1969 -1980 WILKINSON SWORD LIMITED
1976 -1980 Pre-Production Section Leader
Wilkinson Sword designed & developed complete manufacturing lines for the production of new shaving
system products, from machine build facilities in Acton (London) and R&D plus Pre-Production facilities in
Cramlington (Northumberland).
Responsibilities & Achievements:
• Pre-production trial, installation & commissioning of innovative high speed linear assembly
lines for the Profile ™ shaving system for UK production lines.
• Procurement, test & installation of plant required for “Close & Easy™” disposable razor
system.
• Leading a team of up to 5 Engineers.
• Operator training and manual preparation for new production line machinery.
• Machine monitoring for performance optimisation.
• Quality audit of new product lines during production start-up phase.
• Establishment, during 1979, of pre-production facilities in Acton (London) following relocation
from Cramlington.
1972 -1976 Development Engineer
Wilkinson Sword developed novel processes in Cramlington, Northumberland, for the manufacture of longer
lasting and high quality razor blades, rolling out manufacturing facilities to local and overseas sites.
Responsibilities & Achievements:
• Developed and commissioned low tech blade strip treatment and PTFE edge coating
processes for use in a manufacturing facility in Irun, Spain.
• Supervised 2 Engineers and a quality Audit team throughout a 3 month programme to install
and commission "Profile™" shaving system rotary assembly machines in New Jersey, USA.
• Implemented batch processing of razor blades in Reactive Plasma Sputtering equipment.
• Assisted in the optimisation of production PTFE spraying and sintering processes.
• Monitored high speed blade making lines to support engineering work in improving quality and
raising line efficiency.
1969 -1972 Student Apprentice
Wilkinson Sword provided sponsorship and Industrial training throughout the HND sandwich course.
Responsibilities & Achievements:
• Experimentation with use of vacuum deposition of metal oxides on to razor blade tips by
reactive plasma sputtering.
• Investigation of RF heating systems for sintering PTFE coatings to razor blade tips.
• Assessment of high speed automatic dimensional checking and sorting of plastic injection
moulded components for the "Bonded™" shaving system.
