1. Internship leads to own business
Luke Gibson is investing in his future by starting his own painting
business.
Gibson, a graduate of Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early College High School
and freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is
participating in an internship through Young Entrepreneurs Across
America which allows him to start his own business through Student
Painters.
“It sounded like a good opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” Gibson
said. “It is a good opportunity for me to learn all aspects of running a
business.”
After hearing about the program in one of his classes, Gibson went
through an application process and was selected as a branch manager for
the Concord and Kannapolis area. He plans to spend his spring and
summer marketing the business and providing a quality painting service
to his customers.
“This internship hires select people and trains them to run their own
business,” Gibson said. “I’m going to start the business this spring.”
Student Painters has a mission to give a new and unique, professional
experience to college students. The organization focuses on ensuring
high quality painting services to customers through training and
developing college students into young entrepreneurs. According to the
organization’s website, “We develop students into business professionals
and in the process, prepare students not only for the fast-changing
environment of life after college, but for exciting career paths within our
company as well.”
Gibson and other branch managers have a training conference at the end
of January and then he hopes to begin marketing and providing estimates
for potential customers. He plans to hire 10-12 students in March and
April from the Concord/Kannapolis area to work as marketers or
painters for his business. The students will be trained in all aspects of
2. exterior painting, including staining and power washing. The painters
will begin work in May.
“All of the people I’m hiring will be students,” Gibson said. “So this
allows other students to get money from college and for the marketers, it
gives them real-world marketing experience, which is awesome for
resumes.”
Just like in the real world, Gibson said his personal profits are based on
how well he manages the business. He has a goal to run a $100,000
business which he says could lead to a $20,000 profit for him.
He recently visited Concord Mayor J. Scott Padgett to discuss the
internship and plans for his business. During the visit, Padgett signed a
proclamation declaring April 5, 2016 as Student Painters Day in
Concord.
“I am beyond excited to get started. I got hired in October,” Gibson said.
“We’ve been hearing all these great things of people who have been in
internship before. So I’m ready to get started.”
