2. Lana Del Rey – Ultraviolence album
Released: June 13 2014
Genre: Dream pop,
psychedelic rock.
3. Analysing the colour scheme
Inside the CD Box: The light faded colours on the inside of the CD box fit well with the “dream pop” genre because it looks like
you’re in a dream. It connotes that her music his relaxing like a dream. The slight hint of pink on the flowers could connote the
theme of love. Some of her songs are about love and relationships (links between the music and the visuals). The colour scheme
also reminds me of an indie style album because it looks like the pictures were taken with an old camera.
Front cover of album: The black and white filter that has been applied to this picture fit well with the “psychedelic rock” genre
because when you see a rock album, you stereotypically expect to see lots of blacks. The blacks could also link back to her lyrics…
Sometimes her lyrics can be sad (links between music and the visuals).
CD artwork: The CD artwork is similar with to the colours on the inside of the CD box. The picture seems to be of flowers… Similar
ones to the ones seen on the inside of the CD box (continuity throughout product). However the colour of the flowers seem to be
brighter then the ones on the inside of the CD box.
4. Analysing the mise-en-scene
Front cover: In the front cover, Lana is wearing a sheer white T-shirt and a white strapless bra while leaning
against her Mercedes-Benz 380SL. The fact that her bra is visible through her shirt could connote Lana’s
cheeky side of her personality. This could be a part of her star image (star persona) that has been created by
her record label or it could be Lana’s actual personality. Furthermore the fact that she is stood against her
Mercedes-Benz 380SL which looks like an old American car could connote that she is a proud American that
loves old fashioned things. The way she has placed her hand on the car door makes her look elegant because
you won’t see many people stood like this.
5. Analysing the mise-en-scene (continued)
In this picture we see Lana lying in flowers, smoking a
cigarette and wearing a relaxed t-shirt. The t-shirt could
connote that she is a very laidback person and isn’t too
bothered about her image. The cigarette could connote a
sense of relaxation as cigarettes are used to calm nerves.
Linking back to the whole dream like feel that her artwork is
connoting. The cigarette also stands out to us, as everything
else in the picture seems to be all sweet, innocent and
harmless but then we see the cigarette. This could suggest to
us that her life isn’t all sweet and innocent and that it could
possibly have some danger in it. She commonly uses the
following themes in her music: mistresses, Lolita-kind of
women, cruel love, money, death, broken American dream and
violence.
6. Analysing the photography
A medium long shot is
used here to show detail of
the things surrounding
Lana as well as keeping
her in shot. It makes the
shoot look like an old
American movie which is
one of the many themes
that Lana puts into her
music (matching the music
with the visuals).
A close-up is used here to capture Lana’s relaxed and
carefree facial expressions which fit in with the “dream
pop” genre as it reminds us of a dream.
