Herbal drugs industry: Present scope and future
prospects.
A brief account of plant based industries and
institutions involved in work on medicinal and
aromatic plants in India.

2. • Present scope of herbal drug industry have
been known since the era of Civilization and
highly esteemed all over the world. A rich
source of medicinal agent the popularity of
natural products is increasing day by day due
to the fact that they are comparatively safe, less
toxic, less Side Effects , easily available and
affordable prices.
• When compared to synthetic drugs the herbal
drug industry is very fast growing sector in the
international market in India various system of
medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani ,
homeopathy, yoga and Naturopathy are being
utilized for the health care of the people.

3. • Scope of herbal drugs medicine and
industry-
• Indian herbal market, herbal drugs constitutes
a major share of all the official recognized
system of the health in India Ayurveda, yoga,
Unani, Siddha, homeopathy and Naturopathy
except Allopathic.
• More than 70% of India's 1.1 billion
population still use these non allopathic
systems of medicine currently there is no
separate category of herbal drugs are dietary
supplements as per Indian drugs act however
there is a fast experimental evidence-based for
many of the natural drugs.

4. • According to Biodiversity in India Raw drugs
obtained from around 2400 plant species it is a
fastest growing market and main attend to
14500 crore and expert to 9000 crore with a
compound annual growth rate CAGR of 20%
and 25% respectively according to Associated
Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.
• The herbal industry biz has relieved that
currently the Indian herbal market size is
estimated at 7000 crore and or 3600 crore of
herbal raw materials and medicines are
exported by India.

5. • In India there are About 8000 medicinal plants varieties
are used out of which 25 manufacturers are large scale
manufacturers the annual turnover in India was around
US dollar 300 million for ayurvedic and US dollar 27.7
million for Unani medicine.
• International scope of herbal medicine-
According to WHO (World Health Organization)
approximately 25% of modern drugs used in the United
States have been derived from plants more than 120
active compounds isolated from higher plants are widely
used in modern allopathic medicine today and 80% of
them show a positive correlation between their modern
therapeutic use and the traditional use of plants from
which they are derived at least 7000 medicinal
compounds derived from the plants in the ingredients of
herbal medicine are included in the modern
Pharmacopoeia of drugs.

6. • Future prospect of herbal medicine or
industry scope of herbal medicine included
new leads Phytochemistry, Molecular
Biology, modern herbal formulations, plant
biotechnology, genetic engineering.
• Herbal medicines based traditional Medical
System of treatment is a rapidly growing
Healthcare system of economic importance
and is now widely used in many countries of
the world.

7. The following leads that development are future prospect in
herbal drug industry.
• 1. plant product can be also useful as a starting material
for the semi synthetic preparation of Other Drugs
example plant steroid diosgenin, oral contraceptives ,
hormones, microorganisms streptomyces genus,
antibiotics, streptomycin, neomycin, tetracycline,
chloramphenicol.
• 2. The interest in natural products is a source of new
biologically active compounds has expanded due to
increasing research and development in
Phytochemistry.
• 3. it has been estimated that 56% of lead compounds for
medicines in British National formulary are natural
products are derived from them .

8. • 4. With the development of techniques of Molecular
Biology there has been an increase of interest in the use of
natural occurring proteins as potential therapeutic agents
• 5. Several genetically engineered natural products had a
significant impact and more than 20 biotechnology
derived products are now in the market for example
tissue plasminogen activator is used as a thrombolytic
after myocardial infarction, erythropoietin is used to treat
anemia associated with renal failure, several colony-
stimulating factors are used for cancer treatment.
• 6. Natural products will continue to be important in the
following three areas of drug Discovery-
• a. as a targeted for production by biotechnology
• b. As a source of new lead compounds of novel chemical
structure and
• c. as the active ingredient for useful treatment derived
from traditional system of medicine

9. • In the face of increasing use and fastest growing market
of herbal medicine and other herbal Healthcare products
in both developing and developed countries of the
World policymakers Health professionals and the public
are increasingly expressing concern about the safety
efficacy quality availability reservation and further
development problems of these herbal products public
demand has also grown for evidence on the safety
efficacy and quality of herbal products and traditional
medicine and complementary and Alternative Medicine
practices in order to ensure quality and safety of herbal
medicines their production sale and use should be
officially and legally controlled by established rules and
regulations so that herbal medicines can be used a safely
for medical and therapeutic purpose and efforts should
be made to raise public awareness about the risk and
benefits of using herbal medicines.
