3. Motivation
● The number of forest fires
increases every year, especially
in summer
● Air pollution will increase the
risk of fires exponentially
● Serious repercussions on
human health, nature and the
economy
5. Interview
Could a smart solution help you
to fight the fires?
Sure, but the problem is that 90% of the
woodlands are private, so we could never install
sensors in their properties. Furthermore we
haven’t economic resources to sustain the
expenses and train the team.

6. Persona & Scenario
Scenario
Mario is 45 years old, he is a common
citizen. He has 20 hectares of woodland
in the heart of Umbria. He sells wood for
work and he is always very careful to the
state of his woodland.
It's Monday afternoon, he stands in front of
his desk answering many daily calls.
At some time, his smartphone emits a sound
and Mario, in a few seconds, manages to
identify a small presence of smoke in a
certain area of his forest.
He immediately calls the firefighters and
thanks to his timeliness, the fire is tamed in
a few minutes without significant damage to
its land.
7. Interview
What features should have the
system to monitoring your
woodland?
The most important thing is that it should warn
me in real time when the sensor detects smoke,
with a notification or call on my phone. It would
be nice to help me prevent some fires.

8. User needs
★ Real-time
★ Economic
★ Reliable
★ Easy to use
★ Allow prevention
★ Quick detection
They would like a system:
9. Our idea
A network of smart sensors,
deployed in the forest
● Each sensor is independent from the
others, they can be deployed with more
or less granularity
● They can be deployed either in all the
forest or just in some areas of interest
more prone to fires, like near roads
10. Our idea
● The sensors gather information about
the air, like temperature, humidity and
smoke
● The data is sent to the central server to
be analyzed
● Users get notified in real time by the
system and is able to see in real time
the status of deployed sensors on a
map
11. Our idea
Our solution aims to provide real time:
● Prevention via the use of machine
learning techniques to (try to) predict
whether a certain area is prone to fires
in the near future
● Detection via smoke sensors
12. Existing solutions
Already proposed solutions:
● Forest Fire Detection System based on Wireless Sensor Network,
by Junguo Zhang, Wenbin Li, Zhongxing Yin, Shengbo Liu, Xiaolin Guo
● Animals as Mobile Biological Sensors for Forest Fire Detection,
by Yasar Guneri Sahin
Our goal is to provide a solution which not just notifies the presence of a
wildfire, but tries to predict if it is likely to happen, while being more cost
effective and easy to configure in small and medium sized areas
