2. Introduction
• The chemistry Department has different members e.g. the
Head of Department (HOD),chemistry teachers, laboratory
technicians and laboratory assistants.
• All these members also report to other bosses above them.
• For a proper running of the Department, each member
must have clearly defined roles

3. Roles of HOD
• To monitor and evaluate teaching within the department, to keep a record of
lesson observations and to conduct an annual review with teaching staff.
• To collate Chemistry examination and test results for all year groups and to
arrange to report those, as required.
• To participate in the appointment of new members of staff.
• To chair regular meetings of the Chemistry Department

4. Roles of HOD Continued..
• To liaise with the Science enrichment Coordinator about events and
opportunities in Chemistry.
• To meet regularly with the Head of Physics and Head of Biology in order to
discuss matters of mutual concern, such as planning for science fair or
laboratory requirements.
• In case of technician absence, to ensure that adequate provision is in place
for practical work to go ahead where possible.

• To monitor staff development both academically, professionally and
otherwise.
• To meet regularly with technicians and to oversee their work.

6. Roles of Chemistry Teachers
• To provide opportunities for students to apply and practice what is learned
in chemistry.
• To build student ability to work collaboratively with others.
• To implement the designated chemistry curriculum completely in due time.
• To conduct assigned classes for chemistry lessons in the designed time.
• To evaluate the students’ performance in an objective, fair and in timely
manner.

7. Roles of Chemistry Teacher cont’d
• To prepare and maintain chemistry files
• To attend and participate in chemistry departmental meetings and activities
according to the school policy
• To set, mark and evaluate students.
• To do any other duty as assigned by Head of Chemistry Dept. or Director of
studies
• Plan and organize practicals with lab technician and lab assistants

8. Roles of lab technician-Cont’d
• Maintain a regular list of chemical usage
• Maintain a regular list of breakables in the laboratory working with
laboratory assistant
• Do an annual inventory of the materials and equipment in the laboratory in
coordination with HOD.

9. Roles of laboratory assistant
• Support the professional laboratory technician in collecting specimens, set
up of the specimens and preparing specimens for analysis.
• Monitor or supervise the progress of the practical done by students in the
absence of the professional technician
• Keep the laboratory and laboratory apparatus clean.
• Help in disposal of wastes from the laboratory under instructions of the

10. Roles of DOS
• To monitor and evaluate teaching within the department.
• To introduce new chemistry teachers.
• Assigning the tasks to chemistry teachers to accomplish the syllabus in the
minimum time possible.
• Assigning responsibilities like class Teachers to the members of the
Department
• Ensure that departments do schemes of work

11. Roles of Deputy HM
• Receive requisitions for specimens and apparatus and take them to the head teacher for
approval.
• Do other responsibilities as assigned by headteacher from time to time.

• Approve of the requisitions for the apparatus, specimens for
Practicals
• To monitor and evaluate teaching within the department.
• Recruitment of the chemistry teachers after the consent of the
Head of department when there is a need.
