Dear students,
This module covers the healthy mouth, examination of a patient and treatment planning.
Dental caries: definition, epidemiology, classification, carious process and detection. It will also
cover the Classification, etiology and features of periodontal diseases, Pathogenesis and
progression of periodontal diseases and inflammatory periodontal diseases.
The module provides the students with microbiological and patho-physiological concepts
relevant to oral diseases
This module illustrates the of progression and presentation of dental diseases (Caries and
Periodontal Disease)
The Continuous assessment will be the Online Quizzes, Assignments and Discussions. Final
Examinations will be multiple choice question exams.

2. B) Objectives (The mainmodule's outcomes):
At the end of the module the students enrolled should be able to:
Illustrate the of progression and presentation of dental diseases (Caries and
Periodontal Disease)

Compare and contrast dynamic nature of the caries process
Classification and detection of caries
Describe the different types of deposits and stains.
Interpret the factors which affect the development of plaque
Plan the methods of removing stains and deposits effectively
Differentiate between of supra and sub gingival calculus, its formation and
methods of detection
Describe the extrinsic and intrinsic stains
Identify the Instruments for examination and scaling with their uses
Discuss classification, diagnosis, presentation and Progression of periodontal
diseases.
Elaborate on nutritional influences of diet on the oral mucosa, microorganisms,
effects of drugs, Hematological, Endocrine and Immunodeficient disorders on
periodontal disease
Criticize the influence of systemic condition on periodontal diseases.

2. Student Attendance Policy
o Attendance of students is mandatory for all sessions of the module. An unexcused
absence is considered a breach of professional responsibility and conduct. The student's
absence affects not only himself but also the others in his group whom rely on each other
to generate ideas, share knowledge, and participate in problem solving.
o It is understood that unforeseen circumstances can arise. Therefore, a student will be
allowed to sit for the end-module exam if his total attendance is 85% or more (with
unexcused absence), or 50% or more (with excused absence).
4. o If the total percentage of the student's attendance (with unexcused absence) during any
given module is less than 85%, he is considered failed in that module and he has the right
to attend the resit exam. For any accepted emergency excuse that interferes with the
student sitting for the end-module exam (or part of it), an alternative exam will be
provided to him within the same academic year to attend.
1. Re-examinationPolicy
Students who fail a final examination (primary failure) are required to take a re-examination.
For each examination, which a student has failed, the Course Director will provide a single
make-up opportunity for all students. The make-up examination will not be the same
examination that was previously given but will be equivalent to it.
