Low-grade magnesium oxide (LG-MgO) was used to precipitate ammonium magnesium phosphate (MAP) compounds. The optimal pH, reaction time, and solid to liquid ratio were studied. It was found that over 1.8 times the stoichiometric amount of LG-MgO was needed to fully remove ammonium and phosphates, though LG-MgO reacted slower than pure MgO. A batch process using LG-MgO was proposed to remove ammonium and phosphates prior to biological treatment to reduce COD levels in the wastewater.

This document summarizes a study on preventing saltwater intrusion into coastal area wells. Bentonite clay and coconut shell activated charcoal were used as lining materials. Different mixing proportions were tested, and a ratio of 1 part bentonite clay: 1.5 parts activated charcoal: 1 part sand was found to be most effective. An additional inner layer of activated charcoal was also added. When saltwater was passed through experimental setups with these lining materials, salt intrusion was prevented by over 85%. The biomaterial lining system was concluded to be an effective and affordable way to protect fresh water wells in coastal areas from saltwater contamination.

This document studies the use of orange peel and sugarcane bagasse as low-cost adsorbents for removing nickel from electroplating wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions for nickel removal. Orange peel was found to be most effective at removing nickel (95.21% removal) with conditions of 60 minutes, 10g dosage, and pH 8-10. Sugarcane bagasse achieved lower removal (not specified) with conditions of 75 minutes, 8g dosage, and pH 8-10. The dairy wastewater has high levels of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total solids that require treatment before disposal. The study constructed a laboratory-scale UASB reactor and analyzed parameters like BOD, COD, pH, and total solids at different hydraulic retention times. Results showed reductions in BOD and COD and increases in pH and total solids, with optimal treatment achieved at a 36 hour retention time. The UASB reactor was found to effectively treat dairy wastewater through simple biological processes.
