Jaws Analysis
When a young woman is killed by a 25–foot killer great white shark while skinny–dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police
chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) commits himself to serve and protect his town by closing the beaches. Unfortunately, the mayor of the island has a
different idea. Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt
Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer 25–foot beast, and the trio engage in
an epic battle of man vs. nature. Steven Spielberg's, Jaws is an instant classic horror film that'll bring shivers down a viewer's spine and has them ready

This is no mystery or surprise. The creature, which has long been the topic of numerous studies and experiments, is still a source of great mystery.
Why in the world does a shark need to grow the size of a school bus? Who is it trying to impress with that massiveness? And those teeth? They
taught us in elementary school that a shark might use over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime. If one falls out, another replaces it. Say what you may
about the special effects in Jaws, those teeth look real and they will eat your face off. So, therefore the movie was so successful. Because of the
productions ability to create a mechanical shark that is similar in anatomy and identical to the real predator, the film could create this higher sense
of man vs nature, good vs evil. This horror film will leave you wondering with the question of what if this happens to me. Spielberg took something
that was so real and had happened before (shark attacks), and produced a movie that not only warned us and opened our eyes to its reality, but was
also able to deliver us with one of the most classic horror films in the history of

Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws Essay
Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws
The film "Jaws" has been directed and produced in 1975 by Steven Spielberg. It is about a police chief that has been assigned to a hot resort on one of
New England Coast's beaches. His job is to make sure that the killer shark, which has already eaten a person in this area, does not have a chance to
attack again.
The film is set on the 4th of July because it is a national holiday in America – The Independence Day. Lots of people organise picnics, go for holidays
etc. The New England Coast is an attraction to tourists and many people visit it during their holidays. In the film the protagonist is chief Brody (Roy
Scheider). The secondary characters are...show more content...
After the attack and the disturbing music the 'dead' silence came. This is to highlight the fact that the girl has been killed in a very brutal and painful
way and that nobody could help her, even if they wanted to. It also tells the audience that the shark is creepy, awful and unstoppable. This shark
characterisation helped the director to build tension more effectively before the future attacks.
Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness of the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting
closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is about to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not
survive as previous victims had not survived.
In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the audience. The scene began with a straight, long
shot of a 10 year old boy, Alex, going to his mother to ask for more time in the water. The straight shot was used to show equality, to make the
audience feel as they are in the same place with all tourists on the beach. This did not build any tension because nothing was going to happen at that
point. The audience might wonder why so much time is spent with Alex, why we are continously focused on him, not on any of the other boys– this

Steven Spielberg Essay
Steven Spielberg has produced many great films and a wide variety of films. Spielberg was a high school dropout, but he was still able to be
successful with 3 academy awards. In class, we have watched 3 different movies he has produced: Jaws, Jurassic Park, and War horse. In these films, he
uses many different cinematic techniques to show emotion, power, and tension.
In these films, Steven Spielberg uses hard lighting and two shot close ups to show different emotions of the characters. For example, in the film Jaws he
uses a hard lighting to show that Brody is happy. The shark in the movie killed 5 people. The town mayor and police chief were having a conflict,

Jaws: American Thriller
Task 1– Thriller Genre: Jaws (1975) trailer
The text Jaws is an American Thriller film released in 1975. It is a suspenseful, tense script that focuses on the use of iconography, narrative
conventions and character conventions to build a masterpiece of thriller text. Through the use of these elements, Jaws becomes an effective example of
the codes and conventions of the thriller genre.
The text Jaws is famous for its effective use of iconography. Diegetic and non–diegetic sound play key roles in creating anticipation and suspense in the
text. The use of screams, deep voices and one liners like "we're gonna need a bigger boat" are all examples of how the responder is made to feel uneasy
and cautious about what is to come. The music in Jaws

Movie Analysis: Jaws
Teresa ViggianoFIL3854 July 12, 2015 Analysis #1 Jaws Jaws is based on a shark that causes disruption on a beach during a holiday and keeps
returning to hunt. In the scene I have chosen to examine, many different forms of cinematography, lighting, sound and narrative techniques are utilized.
The outfits worn by the three main characters are based on their personalities. Before the shark comes into the scene I have analyzed, the three men are
not showing their nervousness or uneasy attitudes. The costumes the men are wearing show an example of stereotypes. Brody is the preppy, worried
looking character, Hooper is the nerd–like type and Quint is the laid back hippie type who is not worried about his appearance. The scene that has

Both of these men were on a mission to find the shark that has been killing beachgoers, and Brody was the sheriff who was tagging along to assist.
The editing in this film enhances the impact this movie makes on the viewers. The camera angle is used to make us feel as if we are in the movie
with the characters. If we were to experience a scene with sharks it would not have an accurate affect on our emotions. John Williams is a needed
component in the film and this is the reason why the music makes such a difference for the film. All films use sound to have an effect on the viewer.
Many horror films need a certain type of sound to distinguish when something bad is about to happen or if the bad character is about to show up. The
camera angle of Quint and the close–up that is used gives a better effect when he is telling the story to Hooper and Brody. Brody's face is hooked on
the story and he is being affected by the way in which Quint uses his voice. Brody is so connected to the story Quint is telling that he and Hooper do
not hear the shark banging on the side of the boat attempting to get

Jaws Blockbuster Effect
Known as one of the greatest and most famous films of all time, Jaws was recognized as a summer blockbuster after its release in June 1975. Jaws,
directed by Steven Spielberg, was highly known for its outstanding cinematography, scenic music, as well as the effect it had on filmmaking history
with the tremendously small budget they had of 9 million dollars. This film created a summer blockbuster by being the start of great suspense, action,
and strong effects and explosions. Movies these days have extreme CGI effects where many viewers may not be amazed nor shocked about, but Jaws,
being the first film with solid effects, has impacted a vast audience. Jaws and the notion of the blockbuster have a huge connection and relation due to
the impact it brought to millions of viewers and greater films it has impacted and created. Not only has Jaws made millions of...show more content...
"Jaws invented that form of pleasurable entertainment exactly 40 years ago this week, opening on June 20, 1975. It also launched the career of Steven
Spielberg and turned sharks, in the popular imagination, from fish into monsters" (Marche). It is truly amazing how Spielberg was able to accomplish
such a task in being able to change billions of peoples' view on one aspect. One film created how a shark can be viewed as a surviving animal living in
the ocean on one day and a vicious, man–eating killer the next. The suspense that is used throughout the film had an impact on many movies today;
directors today use the cuts and ideas that resemble attacks under water or scenes out in the ocean. The huge explosions and surprising shark attacks
have given directors a new view on filming and cinematography. The effect this film had not only influenced the audience but also Spielberg and various

Analysis of Jaws
This essay will analyse the film 'Jaws' and look at the ways that Steven Spielberg (The director) builds suspense and scares the audience in the film.
Jaws was the box–office sensation of 1975 and the number–one hit movie of the decade until 1977's 'Star Wars'; this was a time when the success or
failure of a few blockbusters began to determine the course of the entire motion picture industry. The film is about a killer shark that causes havoc
among an island resort town, called Amity, somewhere in New England. The film is set on the 4th of July this is because in America the 4th of July is

The scene looks so innocent, but we then see a high angle shot of the teenagers who are unaware of the threat nearby. We then see a wide shot of
the sea and can hear the noise of the waves crashing against the shore. Then above the calm noise of the sea we hear the load cry of a buoy with its
bell ringing. The bell is a warning sound and gives us the impression that something bad is going to happen. We also know that the girl will be part of
the attack for a two reasons. One, the camera focuses on her and follows her around the screen and two, she is the first person in the water and we
know that the there is a contrast between the safety of the land and the dangers that lurk in the sea.
Now that the young girl is in the sea, we being to hear the theme of the shark. The two very low semitones create suspense in the viewer because we
know the shark is nearby and that the young girl is in danger. The two notes begin to get faster and faster, until there is silence and we see the young
girl swimming. We know something is going happen, but we are in suspense because the music has stopped and we are waiting to see if the shark is
still there. We then get our answer when we see the girl, seemingly getting pulled underneath the water. We do not see what is pulling her down but we
know it is something strong and powerful.

Jaws Cinematography
During the film Steve Spielberg uses music, a mysterious shark and camera techniques such as simultaneous track and zoom, long shot, close up shots
and medium shots to build suspense, tension and scare the audience. The music represents the shark, especially its movements and its presence. In the
title sequence the camera is moving along the seabed like a shark. Spielberg makes the audience believe that the camera is viewing things through the
shark's eyes, he uses a camera shot called point of view shot. The music makes the shark seem a mystery because you haven't yet seen the shark but
you can feel its presence. The music clouds your vision and makes you imagine and believe something that actually isn't even there. It builds tension

Police Chief Brody jumps up from his tense sitting position and shouts for everybody to get out of the water. This was what Police Chief Brody was
worried about. The boy, Alex is a lost cause can do nothing but scream, splash and attempt to believe he can escape from thesharks clutches. Alex is
dragged down violently as he tries to gasp for breath; he is finally dragged and lost to the depths of the dark sea. The camera shot is really close up
to the boy as he is fighting for his life; we see his pain, his struggle and his death. Everyone on the beach couldn't miss the raft in the distance flip
over and the blood spill into the sea. Though audience might have had to do a double take, because if you look carefully the camera does show the
shark, the shark is the one that flipped over the raft. After everybody's out of the water it is silent like the previous attack not necessarily calm but
perhaps subdued shock. There is lots of clever camera techniques used in the second attack scene, which are used to create tension and fear. Close ups
of Police Chief Brody looking intensely into the sea, views of the sea and the underwater camera shot where we view through the sharks eyes are all
clever camera techniques which create tension and fear. The camera shots also pay close attention to detail. For example, when the man with the dog
throws a stick for his dog to fetch into the sea, the camera

Essay on Jaws
Is Jaws a Horror Movie? First I will highlight the brief journey through the horror genre and the conventions that have developed. Second, I will then
show how these conventions are used in the film Jaws. Let's start with the silent era, an era based on monsters, Frakingstien 1910, Dracula 1912, The
Phantom Of The Opera 1925. Without sound, there was a heavy emphasis on make– up, adding to the horror and preparing the first convention, which
is the reveal of the monster. Facial expressions and body language played big part in early horror movies as it provided the tension. A second
convention was the 'dark property in the middle of nowhere,' using isolation as a way to build up tension. Through the talkies in the 30's little...show

The opening of the film is from the shark point of view, underwater, the scene is errie. John Williams distinctive music playing leaves the audience
tense, especially because they can't see the creature. We cut to the camp fire scene which introduces our first convention, the weak female
teenager. A young girl, Chrissie Watkins and Tom Cassidy leave the safety of a camp fire to go swimming in the middle of the night. We are
moved from a warm, safe elemental scene to the cold, dangerous and open ocean. The final view of the camp fire is a high shot this gives the
audience a feeling that something is watching them. We are left feeling unsettled but excited. The teenagers run the broken fence and now 'out of
bounds' are they safe? Chrissie runs into the water and the camera angle pans back to show the dark ocean with a buoy floating in the distance. A
sultry bell sound ringing out, building up an eerie feeling. In the water Chrissie is presented as a lady even underwater Chrissie appears stunning while
swimming. This same shot is Spielberg shows the point of view of the shark. At this point the audience knows something is going to happen and
Spielberg builds the tension using John Williams score. Spielberg uses diegetic sounds of splashing and non–diegetic sounds to great effective. The
music starts very quietly and slowly. As the shark moves through the water, the beat and the

Suspense in Steven Spielberg's Movie Jaws Essay
Suspense in Steven Spielberg's Movie Jaws
Steven Spielberg, the creator of Jaws, uses many different techniques to draw in the suspense of viewers and to capture their imagination. These
techniques include special effects – to create tension, different camera angles – to show facial expressions and group shots. The classic Jaws music,
known by millions of people, also helps build up tension, to let us know when the shark is approaching. He uses colours, so that we can associate
signs and symbols to forthcoming events, e.g. the colour red is associated with danger. We will be using all of the above devices to help analyse
different parts of the film.
As soon as the film starts, from the title sequence, these techniques are...show more content...
The waves give off a really eerie effect, the whole scene just seems to bee too calm.
The next scene is off the girl swimming, but there is no music playing at all, and makes the atmosphere feel eerie. You wonder what is going to
happen next. Also the girl is totally naked at this time, which makes her seem very vulnerable, as there is nothing between her and the shark, except
water. She is also away from the party, which makes her seem unsafe.
The camera then starts to switch from the girls point of view, to the sharks point of view. The girl is totally defenceless to the shark's capabilities, but
using this effect allows you to relate to both characters.
Next, you see a shot of the girl kicking her legs, and the camera slowly zooms in. This shows the view from the shark's point of view, and shows the
audience that the danger is getting closer, which is certainly building the tension up.
The fact that we do not see the shark makes the audience feel quite uneasy, as in a way we are uncertain of what the danger is. It also builds up a lot
of fear, from our point of view.
There are a lot pauses in the attack, which allows you to see the unconscious boy, slumped on the beach. To me this shows us that the girl's only chance
of survival is totally oblivious to the current events, and is unaware of her screams. Also when the camera switches onto the boy, it gives a chance to

Tension In Jaws
Film Analysis of Jaws by Steven Spielberg
The film Jaws was directed by Steven Spielberg from the best selling novel by Peter Benchley. The film was set in Massachusetts resort town of Amity
Island in the height of the beach season. When the resort was terrorized one summer by surprise attacks from a great white shark. John Williams created
the score to Jaws, which has since become a well–known theme to in depending doom. The film is generally considered one of the scariest movies
ever made. It was also set on the 4th of July, Independence Day. Because on this day loads of people are out and go down to the beach to have beach

Then we see an under water shot of the girl in the water which makes you think something is present in the water (shark). Music starts to play and we
know that something is going to happen which creates more tension and suspense.
The camera switches from top to below the girl building tension from making you think is it going to strike. Then the camera starts to zoom in at the
shark's point of view, as the music gets faster creating fear because we know that the shark is going for the girl. We don't see the shark at any point so
we don't know how big it is making fear of the unknown. In the attack of the girl there is a pause as she grabs hold of a buoy, at this point it makes the
audience think that the shark has stopped or gone relieving some tension. Then suddenly she is dragged back under the water making the audience
jump creating fear and making their hearts race. There is a silence after the attack making letting you know the shark has gone relieving any tension.
And all that is heard is the sound if the sea, knowing it is safe and there is know more threat.
As the film moves towards the second attack it starts on the beach. A young boy walks up the beach to his mother as a 'moving subject' camera angle.
This makes the audience think that the boy is a potential victim for the next attack. The camera angle

A couple of minutes after he gets in the water the shark attack the boy leaving nothing behind except for blood and a shredded yellow lilo. Brody was
sitting on the beach next to his wife looking at the sea with the knowledge that he is putting people's lives in danger. The camera concentrated on
Brody's nervous face by using close–up shot's of his face as well as using mid angle shot to show how his arms are moving from fear. Through out the
scene, people came up to him talking about their problems, but Brody was clearly ignoring them and concentrating on the sea, establishing shots
where used to show what Brody was looking at and long shots to show what he is specifically looking at.
The shark –––––––––
The director builds up fear of the shark through out the film by showing the audience how much damage it can do or through characters reaction.
The first thing that reveals how much damage the shark can do is when the shark rips the jetty to pieces as if it was Lego.Brody told the public to try
and catch the shark for a reward, Two men decided to go down at night to the jetty and catch the shark using a tyre, metal chain and a chunk of meat.

Peter Benchley wrote "Jaws" the novel before it was made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg. "Jaws" is a thriller/horror with the main aim being
to build up suspense and tension. When making the film Jaws Steven Spielberg had to face the challenging task of translating Benchley's popular novel
into a hit movie whilst still maintaining the suspense created through the many textual devices used by Benchley, such as language techniques and
sentence structure. Spielberg managed use different camera angles and shots alongside lighting effects to create atmosphere and tension to pretty much

Another interesting point is as Chrissie is removing her clothes while running it is almost as she is leaving herself exposed to potential danger and
making herself more vulnerable. At this point as the viewer sees Chrissie isolated in the water they realise that she is facing danger only limited by
their own imagination.
As Chrissie continues swimming, the frame changes to a point of view shot, accompanied by the same music as in the opening shot. The audience's
thoughts change immediately from the images of the cheerful beach party to the earlier reference of the shark in the opening sequence. This provides a
very effective contrast. The audience's expectations are realised when Chrissie feels a sharp pain, and then begins splashing about in the water as she is
attacked.
The unseen shark thrashes her around in the water, and she eventually clings onto a buoy, making its bell ring, in a vain attempt to alert the nearby
community. After a final grasp for breath, she finally disappears under the surface of the water leaving the viewers with the burden of her death.
The second victim of the shark is a young boy named Alex, this time the scene is set in along the beach, crowded with people enjoying the long
Independence Day holiday. Also on the beach is police chief Brody with his own family. Sunbathers lie on the packed beach. This is a very unlikely
place and time for an eventful scene. Again the

However, his level on commitment to the issue is displayed through his increased efforts to eliminate the shark from the waters. Instead of just

that the right shark that was attacking the people was killed. I saw a significant change in the level of motivation after the scene when the mother of
one of the victims confronts him. The cues that draw attention to this change was when even though he is scared of the water he still goes along to
help. Another major cue that lead me to believe the character has changed when he didn't give up after he thought he was the only one left to kill the
shark. He pushed his fear of the water aside and defeated the shark in the last few minutes of the film (fig. 4,5 & 6.) The scene were he is happy he

Director, screenwriter, and producer, Stephen Spielberg, has been often described by critics as being one of the trailblazers who paved the way for
the new Hollywood era. In fact, one of Spielberg's earliest films, JAWS, captured the audience's attentions so vividly that the movie remains to be a cult
classic even decades later. The audience sunk its teeth deep into the enticing combination of drama, thrill, science–fiction, and adventure the film

Usually, films are neither holistically unrestricted, omniscient, or restricted. If a film is completely unrestricted everything would be expected, which
makes it extremely difficult for the audience to continue watching. However, if the piece is completely restricted, the plot and narration ranges can be
severely limited. JAWS defeats these two flaws by containing both unrestricted and restrictednarrative qualities. Although, he is not the narrator, by
watching Brody's strengths and weaknesses it's unquestionable why any person would root for Brody. Thus, restricting the audience into following the
knowledge of Brody with the exception of the musically intensified shark attacks. For example, every time the camera moves around the water and then
focuses on the next victim's vulnerable feet the audience knows an attack is waiting. The non–diegetic sounds of the iconic musical piece, Main Title,
beautifully speeds up after the camera, thus indicating to the audience the shark is about to attack without the actor's or actress's knowledge. This is
vividly shown in both the opening scene and the Alex Kintner scene as a tactic to get the audience's heartbeat pumping and blood pressure rising. On
another note, screenwriters often surround the protagonist with family members hoping this would create a sentimental relationship between the
audience and the character. However, this often does not because of

campfire, most of them under the influence of drugs and alcohol. During this scene we see Chrissie Watkins–the first victim of the shark attack, and a
visitor of Amity Island–run off for a tryst with a boy from the island. As Chrissie runs ahead, she begins to undress herself and jumps into the dark
unknown waters of the night. As she swims further out, the the camera shows a long shot capturing a sunset, which with the lack of lighting presents
each of the characters as silhouettes. This form of lighting adds suspense to the film and led me to wonder what the next few shots would include.

With his eyes fixated on the water, the camera shifts to each person in the water as if he is looking at each person. First, the director uses a long

dramatically closer. With this technique used three times I was able to get a close up shot of Brody and visualize the concentration on his face. The

Jaws Analysis

  • 1. Jaws Analysis When a young woman is killed by a 25–foot killer great white shark while skinny–dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) commits himself to serve and protect his town by closing the beaches. Unfortunately, the mayor of the island has a different idea. Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer 25–foot beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature. Steven Spielberg's, Jaws is an instant classic horror film that'll bring shivers down a viewer's spine and has them ready ...show more content... This is no mystery or surprise. The creature, which has long been the topic of numerous studies and experiments, is still a source of great mystery. Why in the world does a shark need to grow the size of a school bus? Who is it trying to impress with that massiveness? And those teeth? They taught us in elementary school that a shark might use over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime. If one falls out, another replaces it. Say what you may about the special effects in Jaws, those teeth look real and they will eat your face off. So, therefore the movie was so successful. Because of the productions ability to create a mechanical shark that is similar in anatomy and identical to the real predator, the film could create this higher sense of man vs nature, good vs evil. This horror film will leave you wondering with the question of what if this happens to me. Spielberg took something that was so real and had happened before (shark attacks), and produced a movie that not only warned us and opened our eyes to its reality, but was also able to deliver us with one of the most classic horror films in the history of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws Essay Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws The film "Jaws" has been directed and produced in 1975 by Steven Spielberg. It is about a police chief that has been assigned to a hot resort on one of New England Coast's beaches. His job is to make sure that the killer shark, which has already eaten a person in this area, does not have a chance to attack again. The film is set on the 4th of July because it is a national holiday in America – The Independence Day. Lots of people organise picnics, go for holidays etc. The New England Coast is an attraction to tourists and many people visit it during their holidays. In the film the protagonist is chief Brody (Roy Scheider). The secondary characters are...show more content... After the attack and the disturbing music the 'dead' silence came. This is to highlight the fact that the girl has been killed in a very brutal and painful way and that nobody could help her, even if they wanted to. It also tells the audience that the shark is creepy, awful and unstoppable. This shark characterisation helped the director to build tension more effectively before the future attacks. Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness of the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is about to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not survive as previous victims had not survived. In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the audience. The scene began with a straight, long shot of a 10 year old boy, Alex, going to his mother to ask for more time in the water. The straight shot was used to show equality, to make the audience feel as they are in the same place with all tourists on the beach. This did not build any tension because nothing was going to happen at that point. The audience might wonder why so much time is spent with Alex, why we are continously focused on him, not on any of the other boys– this starts to build Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Steven Spielberg Essay Steven Spielberg has produced many great films and a wide variety of films. Spielberg was a high school dropout, but he was still able to be successful with 3 academy awards. In class, we have watched 3 different movies he has produced: Jaws, Jurassic Park, and War horse. In these films, he uses many different cinematic techniques to show emotion, power, and tension. In these films, Steven Spielberg uses hard lighting and two shot close ups to show different emotions of the characters. For example, in the film Jaws he uses a hard lighting to show that Brody is happy. The shark in the movie killed 5 people. The town mayor and police chief were having a conflict, because the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Jaws: American Thriller Task 1– Thriller Genre: Jaws (1975) trailer The text Jaws is an American Thriller film released in 1975. It is a suspenseful, tense script that focuses on the use of iconography, narrative conventions and character conventions to build a masterpiece of thriller text. Through the use of these elements, Jaws becomes an effective example of the codes and conventions of the thriller genre. The text Jaws is famous for its effective use of iconography. Diegetic and non–diegetic sound play key roles in creating anticipation and suspense in the text. The use of screams, deep voices and one liners like "we're gonna need a bigger boat" are all examples of how the responder is made to feel uneasy and cautious about what is to come. • 5. Movie Analysis: Jaws Teresa ViggianoFIL3854 July 12, 2015 Analysis #1 Jaws Jaws is based on a shark that causes disruption on a beach during a holiday and keeps returning to hunt. In the scene I have chosen to examine, many different forms of cinematography, lighting, sound and narrative techniques are utilized. The outfits worn by the three main characters are based on their personalities. Before the shark comes into the scene I have analyzed, the three men are not showing their nervousness or uneasy attitudes. The costumes the men are wearing show an example of stereotypes. Brody is the preppy, worried looking character, Hooper is the nerd–like type and Quint is the laid back hippie type who is not worried about his appearance. The scene that has many forms...show more content... Both of these men were on a mission to find the shark that has been killing beachgoers, and Brody was the sheriff who was tagging along to assist. The editing in this film enhances the impact this movie makes on the viewers. The camera angle is used to make us feel as if we are in the movie with the characters. If we were to experience a scene with sharks it would not have an accurate affect on our emotions. John Williams is a needed component in the film and this is the reason why the music makes such a difference for the film. All films use sound to have an effect on the viewer. Many horror films need a certain type of sound to distinguish when something bad is about to happen or if the bad character is about to show up. The camera angle of Quint and the close–up that is used gives a better effect when he is telling the story to Hooper and Brody. Brody's face is hooked on the story and he is being affected by the way in which Quint uses his voice. Brody is so connected to the story Quint is telling that he and Hooper do not hear the shark banging on the side of the boat attempting to get Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Jaws Blockbuster Effect Known as one of the greatest and most famous films of all time, Jaws was recognized as a summer blockbuster after its release in June 1975. Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, was highly known for its outstanding cinematography, scenic music, as well as the effect it had on filmmaking history with the tremendously small budget they had of 9 million dollars. This film created a summer blockbuster by being the start of great suspense, action, and strong effects and explosions. Movies these days have extreme CGI effects where many viewers may not be amazed nor shocked about, but Jaws, being the first film with solid effects, has impacted a vast audience. Jaws and the notion of the blockbuster have a huge connection and relation due to the impact it brought to millions of viewers and greater films it has impacted and created. Not only has Jaws made millions of...show more content... "Jaws invented that form of pleasurable entertainment exactly 40 years ago this week, opening on June 20, 1975. It also launched the career of Steven Spielberg and turned sharks, in the popular imagination, from fish into monsters" (Marche). It is truly amazing how Spielberg was able to accomplish such a task in being able to change billions of peoples' view on one aspect. One film created how a shark can be viewed as a surviving animal living in the ocean on one day and a vicious, man–eating killer the next. The suspense that is used throughout the film had an impact on many movies today; directors today use the cuts and ideas that resemble attacks under water or scenes out in the ocean. The huge explosions and surprising shark attacks have given directors a new view on filming and cinematography. The effect this film had not only influenced the audience but also Spielberg and various Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Analysis of Jaws Essay Analysis of Jaws This essay will analyse the film 'Jaws' and look at the ways that Steven Spielberg (The director) builds suspense and scares the audience in the film. Jaws was the box–office sensation of 1975 and the number–one hit movie of the decade until 1977's 'Star Wars'; this was a time when the success or failure of a few blockbusters began to determine the course of the entire motion picture industry. The film is about a killer shark that causes havoc among an island resort town, called Amity, somewhere in New England. The film is set on the 4th of July this is because in America the 4th of July is a national holiday. It is one of the only times in the year in which the whole of America...show more content... The scene looks so innocent, but we then see a high angle shot of the teenagers who are unaware of the threat nearby. We then see a wide shot of the sea and can hear the noise of the waves crashing against the shore. Then above the calm noise of the sea we hear the load cry of a buoy with its bell ringing. The bell is a warning sound and gives us the impression that something bad is going to happen. We also know that the girl will be part of the attack for a two reasons. One, the camera focuses on her and follows her around the screen and two, she is the first person in the water and we know that the there is a contrast between the safety of the land and the dangers that lurk in the sea. Now that the young girl is in the sea, we being to hear the theme of the shark. The two very low semitones create suspense in the viewer because we know the shark is nearby and that the young girl is in danger. The two notes begin to get faster and faster, until there is silence and we see the young girl swimming. We know something is going happen, but we are in suspense because the music has stopped and we are waiting to see if the shark is still there. We then get our answer when we see the girl, seemingly getting pulled underneath the water. We do not see what is pulling her down but we know it is something strong and powerful. • 8. Jaws Cinematography During the film Steve Spielberg uses music, a mysterious shark and camera techniques such as simultaneous track and zoom, long shot, close up shots and medium shots to build suspense, tension and scare the audience. The music represents the shark, especially its movements and its presence. In the title sequence the camera is moving along the seabed like a shark. Spielberg makes the audience believe that the camera is viewing things through the shark's eyes, he uses a camera shot called point of view shot. The music makes the shark seem a mystery because you haven't yet seen the shark but you can feel its presence. The music clouds your vision and makes you imagine and believe something that actually isn't even there. It builds tension ...show more content... Police Chief Brody jumps up from his tense sitting position and shouts for everybody to get out of the water. This was what Police Chief Brody was worried about. The boy, Alex is a lost cause can do nothing but scream, splash and attempt to believe he can escape from thesharks clutches. Alex is dragged down violently as he tries to gasp for breath; he is finally dragged and lost to the depths of the dark sea. The camera shot is really close up to the boy as he is fighting for his life; we see his pain, his struggle and his death. Everyone on the beach couldn't miss the raft in the distance flip over and the blood spill into the sea. Though audience might have had to do a double take, because if you look carefully the camera does show the shark, the shark is the one that flipped over the raft. After everybody's out of the water it is silent like the previous attack not necessarily calm but perhaps subdued shock. There is lots of clever camera techniques used in the second attack scene, which are used to create tension and fear. Close ups of Police Chief Brody looking intensely into the sea, views of the sea and the underwater camera shot where we view through the sharks eyes are all clever camera techniques which create tension and fear. The camera shots also pay close attention to detail. For example, when the man with the dog throws a stick for his dog to fetch into the sea, the camera Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay on Jaws Is Jaws a Horror Movie? First I will highlight the brief journey through the horror genre and the conventions that have developed. Second, I will then show how these conventions are used in the film Jaws. Let's start with the silent era, an era based on monsters, Frakingstien 1910, Dracula 1912, The Phantom Of The Opera 1925. Without sound, there was a heavy emphasis on make– up, adding to the horror and preparing the first convention, which is the reveal of the monster. Facial expressions and body language played big part in early horror movies as it provided the tension. A second convention was the 'dark property in the middle of nowhere,' using isolation as a way to build up tension. Through the talkies in the 30's little...show more content... The opening of the film is from the shark point of view, underwater, the scene is errie. John Williams distinctive music playing leaves the audience tense, especially because they can't see the creature. We cut to the camp fire scene which introduces our first convention, the weak female teenager. A young girl, Chrissie Watkins and Tom Cassidy leave the safety of a camp fire to go swimming in the middle of the night. We are moved from a warm, safe elemental scene to the cold, dangerous and open ocean. The final view of the camp fire is a high shot this gives the audience a feeling that something is watching them. We are left feeling unsettled but excited. The teenagers run the broken fence and now 'out of bounds' are they safe? Chrissie runs into the water and the camera angle pans back to show the dark ocean with a buoy floating in the distance. A sultry bell sound ringing out, building up an eerie feeling. In the water Chrissie is presented as a lady even underwater Chrissie appears stunning while swimming. This same shot is Spielberg shows the point of view of the shark. At this point the audience knows something is going to happen and Spielberg builds the tension using John Williams score. Spielberg uses diegetic sounds of splashing and non–diegetic sounds to great effective. The music starts very quietly and slowly. "My sergeant taught me to be prepared for every situation," John said, and Luc's story was that he quit diving after that night. Once when we were fishing, he told me he didn't like diving with people, and he was too old to dive alone anymore. Whenever he felt restless, he rented 'Jaws'. As he viewed the shark attack in the beginning of the movie, he remembered how happy he was to reach the beach. That scene calmed him, but the sharks made him think of his wife. As the rain increased, Renee said, "I use corn soaked in garlic water over night." "For me, the best is a Castmaster spoon," Luc interjected. Mom looked Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Suspense in Steven Spielberg's Movie Jaws Essay Suspense in Steven Spielberg's Movie Jaws Steven Spielberg, the creator of Jaws, uses many different techniques to draw in the suspense of viewers and to capture their imagination. These techniques include special effects – to create tension, different camera angles – to show facial expressions and group shots. The classic Jaws music, known by millions of people, also helps build up tension, to let us know when the shark is approaching. He uses colours, so that we can associate signs and symbols to forthcoming events, e.g. the colour red is associated with danger. We will be using all of the above devices to help analyse different parts of the film. As soon as the film starts, from the title sequence, these techniques are...show more content... The waves give off a really eerie effect, the whole scene just seems to bee too calm. The next scene is off the girl swimming, but there is no music playing at all, and makes the atmosphere feel eerie. You wonder what is going to happen next. Also the girl is totally naked at this time, which makes her seem very vulnerable, as there is nothing between her and the shark, except water. She is also away from the party, which makes her seem unsafe. The camera then starts to switch from the girls point of view, to the sharks point of view. The girl is totally defenceless to the shark's capabilities, but using this effect allows you to relate to both characters. Next, you see a shot of the girl kicking her legs, and the camera slowly zooms in. This shows the view from the shark's point of view, and shows the audience that the danger is getting closer, which is certainly building the tension up. The fact that we do not see the shark makes the audience feel quite uneasy, as in a way we are uncertain of what the danger is. It also builds up a lot of fear, from our point of view. There are a lot pauses in the attack, which allows you to see the unconscious boy, slumped on the beach. To me this shows us that the girl's only chance of survival is totally oblivious to the current events, and is unaware of her screams. Also when the camera switches onto the boy, it gives a chance to

The film was set in Massachusetts resort town of Amity Island in the height of the beach season. When the resort was terrorized one summer by surprise attacks from a great white shark. John Williams created the score to Jaws, which has since become a well–known theme to in depending doom. The film is generally considered one of the scariest movies ever made. Music starts to play and we know that something is going to happen which creates more tension and suspense. The camera switches from top to below the girl building tension from making you think is it going to strike. Then the camera starts to zoom in at the shark's point of view, as the music gets faster creating fear because we know that the shark is going for the girl. We don't see the shark at any point so we don't know how big it is making fear of the unknown. In the attack of the girl there is a pause as she grabs hold of a buoy, at this point it makes the audience think that the shark has stopped or gone relieving some tension. Then suddenly she is dragged back under the water making the audience jump creating fear and making their hearts race. The camera angle Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Summary of Film Jaws Essay Summary of Film Jaws This essay that I am doing is about a film called Jaws, which was directed by Steven Spielberg. This film is about a killer shark that terrorised people on the Beach of Amity Island on the most popular day of the year, which causes mayhem in the city and between tourists on their summer holiday on the beach. The film is set on the 4th of July because that is Independence Day in America and that's when families go out to the beach and have some fun. Spielberg employs a range of techniques for building tension and fear in the film, some of these that will be discussed in the essay include: music, camera techniques and the shark it self and use of tension. Brody was sitting on the beach next to his wife looking at the sea with the knowledge that he is putting people's lives in danger. The camera concentrated on Brody's nervous face by using close–up shot's of his face as well as using mid angle shot to show how his arms are moving from fear. Through out the scene, people came up to him talking about their problems, but Brody was clearly ignoring them and concentrating on the sea, establishing shots where used to show what Brody was looking at and long shots to show what he is specifically looking at. The shark ––––––––– The director builds up fear of the shark through out the film by showing the audience how much damage it can do or through characters reaction. The first thing that reveals how much damage the shark can do is when the shark rips the jetty to pieces as if it was Lego.Brody told the public to try and catch the shark for a reward, Two men decided to go down at night to the jetty and catch the shark using a tyre, metal chain and a chunk of meat. The shark ate the pate and pulled the chain that was attached to the jetty. The true power

  • 16. Jaws Film Techniques Jaws (1975) Media Coursework Peter Benchley wrote "Jaws" the novel before it was made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg. "Jaws" is a thriller/horror with the main aim being to build up suspense and tension. When making the film Jaws Steven Spielberg had to face the challenging task of translating Benchley's popular novel into a hit movie whilst still maintaining the suspense created through the many textual devices used by Benchley, such as language techniques and sentence structure. Spielberg managed use different camera angles and shots alongside lighting effects to create atmosphere and tension to pretty much the same effect. In the background he uses music and sound effects to add to the dramatic visual images he creates....show more content... Another interesting point is as Chrissie is removing her clothes while running it is almost as she is leaving herself exposed to potential danger and making herself more vulnerable. At this point as the viewer sees Chrissie isolated in the water they realise that she is facing danger only limited by their own imagination. As Chrissie continues swimming, the frame changes to a point of view shot, accompanied by the same music as in the opening shot. The audience's thoughts change immediately from the images of the cheerful beach party to the earlier reference of the shark in the opening sequence. This provides a very effective contrast. The audience's expectations are realised when Chrissie feels a sharp pain, and then begins splashing about in the water as she is attacked. The unseen shark thrashes her around in the water, and she eventually clings onto a buoy, making its bell ring, in a vain attempt to alert the nearby community. After a final grasp for breath, she finally disappears under the surface of the water leaving the viewers with the burden of her death. The second victim of the shark is a young boy named Alex, this time the scene is set in along the beach, crowded with people enjoying the long Independence Day holiday. Also on the beach is police chief Brody with his own family. Sunbathers lie on the packed beach. This is a very unlikely place and time for an eventful scene. • 17. Conflict In Jaws The opening scenes of the film Jaws (Steven Spielberg 1975), one of the main characters chief Martin Brody is introduced. Chief Brody is new to the town and main concern is keeping the people and the water safe. The mayor main concern at first is to keep the revenue coming in, which is keeping the beaches open for visitors. The small town Amity Island, a fictional New England town, busy season is the summer. The films primary conflict, which is a series of shark attacks in a small time frame, is what drives the film to the main turning point. However, by the end of the film we see Chief Brody's character change drastically to achieve the town's main goal, which is to have the beaches safe for visitors. In ACT 1 of the film the exposition (opening scenes of the film), illustrates the kind of character chief Brody is. Chief...show more content... However, his level on commitment to the issue is displayed through his increased efforts to eliminate the shark from the waters. Instead of just letting the fisherman do the job on his own he insists to go with him to help kill the shark. The motivation for this change was to ensure the people that the right shark that was attacking the people was killed. I saw a significant change in the level of motivation after the scene when the mother of one of the victims confronts him. The cues that draw attention to this change was when even though he is scared of the water he still goes along to help. Another major cue that lead me to believe the character has changed when he didn't give up after he thought he was the only one left to kill the shark. He pushed his fear of the water aside and defeated the shark in the last few minutes of the film (fig. 4,5 & 6.) The scene were he is happy he killed the shark was up lifting because after all the unfortunate events that has happened a happy ending made watching the film worth Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The three of us are arranged by height on our dock over the river. We seem to be smelling something unpleasant. It's from the summer our father was determined to teach us proper diving form. He'd followed the Olympics from Mexico City on our radio, and the exploits of the East German Fischer had filled him with ambition for his boys. But our dock had been too low, and so he'd called it the Zero Meter Diving Platform. The bottom where we dove was marshy and shallow and frightened us. "What are you frightened of?" he said to us. • 19. JAWS Director, screenwriter, and producer, Stephen Spielberg, has been often described by critics as being one of the trailblazers who paved the way for the new Hollywood era. In fact, one of Spielberg's earliest films, JAWS, captured the audience's attentions so vividly that the movie remains to be a cult classic even decades later. The audience sunk its teeth deep into the enticing combination of drama, thrill, science–fiction, and adventure the film obtained. At face value, JAWS appears to be focused on a giant monstrous fish, but with further analyzation of the plot structure, narration, and original music demonstrates the brilliance and complexity of why JAWS is a well deserving Oscar–winning movie. Stephen Spielberg claimed the...show more content... Usually, films are neither holistically unrestricted, omniscient, or restricted. If a film is completely unrestricted everything would be expected, which makes it extremely difficult for the audience to continue watching. However, if the piece is completely restricted, the plot and narration ranges can be severely limited. JAWS defeats these two flaws by containing both unrestricted and restrictednarrative qualities. Although, he is not the narrator, by watching Brody's strengths and weaknesses it's unquestionable why any person would root for Brody. Thus, restricting the audience into following the knowledge of Brody with the exception of the musically intensified shark attacks. For example, every time the camera moves around the water and then focuses on the next victim's vulnerable feet the audience knows an attack is waiting. The non–diegetic sounds of the iconic musical piece, Main Title, beautifully speeds up after the camera, thus indicating to the audience the shark is about to attack without the actor's or actress's knowledge. This is vividly shown in both the opening scene and the Alex Kintner scene as a tactic to get the audience's heartbeat pumping and blood pressure rising. On another note, screenwriters often surround the protagonist with family members hoping this would create a sentimental relationship between the audience and the character. However, this often does not because of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Therefore, anytime the song begins to play we know that Jaws is around and getting ready to attack. As the opening scene of Jaws begins I was presented with a variety of unique editing techniques that establish a story line for the rest of the film. The film begins with a group of young adults surrounding a beach campfire, most of them under the influence of drugs and alcohol. During this scene we see Chrissie Watkins–the first victim of the shark attack, and a visitor of Amity Island–run off for a tryst with a boy from the island. As Chrissie runs ahead, she begins to undress herself and jumps into the dark unknown waters of the night. As she swims further out, the the camera shows a long shot capturing a sunset, which with the lack of lighting presents each of the characters as silhouettes. This form of lighting adds suspense to the film and led me to wonder what the next few shots would include. During the next shot, the camera positioning of Chrissie changes as she continues to swim. Once again, it shifts to an old women floating, and then snaps again back to the little boy. This sequence continues a few more times until the camera position changes and is now facing Brody at eye level. With this next shot, the director used an incredibly complex editing technique called wipe. With an image of Brody at eyelevel, the camera captures an individual walking by. More individuals walk by and with the passing of each person, Brody's face is brought dramatically closer. With this technique used three times I was able to get a close up shot of Brody and visualize the concentration on his face. The wiping continues, except this time the camera shifts from Brody to the women floating. With each shift Brody's body language was also changing becoming more upright and ready to announce an attack. The body language of Brody and the fixation on the women made me believe that he was seeing something that I was not. This built suspense in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
