3. THE KEY POINT…
A place that permits 30 mph on
residential roads will never be child
or cycle or family friendly and will
always deter physical activity
Speed becomes greed
When it stops us and our
children from cycling on our
roads through fear of traffic

4. Edinburgh’s 20mph Pilot results
 Support for 20mph rose - 68% before 79% after
 Those considering cycling unsafe fell from 26% to 18%
 Children cycling to school trebled from 4% to 12%.
For older primary age children it rose from 3% to 22%
 Kids allowed to play out doubled from 31% to 66%
 Walking trips +7%, cycling +5% car trips fell 3%.

5. Wide 20mph is Best Value
 Cost £3 per head & falling (fewer repeater signs
needed)- high rates of return
 At 20mph 7x less risk of death than 30mph (10x for
elderly
 20% fewer casualties
 Foundation of active travel, cycling & physical activity
 Suppressed activity is key to health economics as 1.6x
the casualty costs
 Improves Air Quality
 12% reduction in fuel use – 14p off p litre
 Businesses gain higher footfall & profit
 Less road repairs

7. Cycling and Walking
Consultation
We call for the National Speed Limit to
change to 20mph:
£3 p head cost of 20mph (falling due to less repeater
signs needed) when done by each authority.
National 20mph is cheaper, more cost effective &
clearer. It sets a commitment to the safety of all

9. 20mph is the basis of public health
outdoors (90% of public space is
roads & pavements)
Eg York - 20mph side roads, but main
roads & road bridges remain 30mph
–cycling can still feel dangerous
20’s Plenty helps, but doesn’t
reduce fear enough!
Why isn’t 20’s Plenty enough?

10. Vision Zero
 VZ says the target should be no deaths or
serious injuries (currently there is no English
road safety target & deaths are rising)
 VZ commits to ↓ FEAR and to bring ↓traffic
 i.e VZ tackles traffic volume + speed in built up
areas - Both deter women from cycling or
allowing their children out to even learn how.
