Key facts
For every 100
employees Sustrans
engage in our full
package of activities,
we achieve up to 38
tonnes of CO2
reduced
per year.
Typical benefits of
Sustrans’ employee
engagement projects
deliver estimated
savings to organisations
of a minimum of £7500
a year.
The last major
Sustrans Challenge
achieved over 2000
registrations across
hundreds of companies.
Cutting business
carbon emissions
through
sustainable travel
The challenge
Currently there is one car for every two
people in the UK, and CO2
emissions from
cars make up 13% of the UK total.1
The Department for Transport reports that
road transport accounts for 69% of total
transport CO2
emissions, with cars and taxis
accounting for 43% and other road vehicles
accounting for 26%.2
The way we travel affects global climate
change. UK transport CO2
emissions are
expected to rise by 35% between 1990 and
2030.3
An increase in walking or cycling can
help reduce car travel, leading to reductions
in air pollution, carbon dioxide emissions
and congestion4
.
Sustrans’ solution
Sustrans’ has introduced its Sustainable
Travel Challenge to employees in hundreds
of workplaces across the UK. The Challenge
is a web-based interactive competition
where employees log their journeys online.
Real-time information including carbon
reduction details are available through the
employee’s dashboard and individual and
group leader boards.
Previous Sustrans Challenges have:
•	saved 40,000kg CO2
emissions with
28,000 journeys logged
•	increased the amount of cycling (in 55%
of participants) and walking (in 46% of
participants)
•	reduced the distance travelled by car each
day in 72% of participants.
Reducing the number of cars on the road will mean quieter, safer and more appealing roads, encouraging more people
to walk and cycle. In turn, this can result in less congestion and therefore less pollution.
