2. REGAL SPRINGS TILAPIAis known as the finest Tilapia on the market:
our pure taste and consistent quality is unmatched, due to our complete vertical integration.
Our premium product is the result of careful stewardship of natural resources and respect
for our communities’ well-being.
We are owned by the same family that founded the farms in the 1980s as an alternative to
nonprofit “aid” -- because a community working for profit has a long term vested interest
in the sustainability and success of a venture. The fact that we still operate in the same
community where we first started (Wunut, Java), is a testimony to our stewardship practices.
Our farms, in Indonesia, Honduras and Mexico, use floating cages in large fresh water lakes;
our processing facilities are state-of-the-art; our traceability is complete; and our employees
and their environment are sustained. Our commitments are confirmed by third-party
certifications against the most reputable international standards: British Retail Council (BRC),
Surefish (HACCP), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Global Aquaculture Alliance/
Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification.
We produce premium Tilapia

5. LAND
As land is increasingly “consumed” by industry and housing developments,
it becomes critical to preserve what land remains. With our floating
cages, we utilize less than 1% surface area of clean fresh water reservoirs
in rural areas. The facilities where we process the fish take minimal land
space. We institute programs, such as our Fish for Trees project, to save
additional land around us, encouraging communities to save their forests
and to find more efficient heating and cooking methods.
Resource Use
The world’s increasing demand for protein sources calls for those
of us in production to operate frugally, creating value wherever
we can. We at Regal Springs realize that there is no “zero impact”
activity, and this sobering thought shapes our decisions.
6. PROTEIN
Tilapia are omnivores; ours are predominantly herbivores, ingesting very
little animal protein in their feed. In Honduras, we produce and sell more
fish meal and fish oil than we consume -- we are doing our part to ease the
worldwide dependence on capture fisheries in animal feeds.
Since fillets are only 35% of the biomass that we raise, the guts, frames,
skins and scales make up a tremendous part of our activity (only, we don’t
talk about it much). The scales are sold to the cosmetic industry; skins are
used in gelatin production for pharmaceuticals. Some of the skins are used
in fashion applications; we have a small sister company that has produced
luxury fashion accessories from this sustainable alternative to snake leather.
Liquid is separated into layers of oil solids and water; oil is commercialized
for animal feed or used in our biodiesel production to power equipment and
trucks on our facilities.
We also use a simple, effective, carbon-rich composting system, utilizing
bamboo structures and rice hull.
WATER
Our fish farms’ success depends on the ongoing health of our waters. The
greatest immediate threat to the environment and our lakes is deforestation
that permits rampant erosion, introducing unhealthy levels of organic
matter into the waters. By partnering with local NGOs, we actively protect
our lakes. Also our effluent waters are controlled. In Indonesia, we utilize the
nutrient-rich waters from our processing facilities to fertilize rice fields. In
some cases, the waters are re-used in catfish farming facilities.
