• Rajubhai Gosai, 56, a tailor living in Nikol area of the city, learnt
about his malfunctioning kidneys in a rather unpleasant way .His
wife, Indu, was on regular dialysis as both her kidneys had
failed.Gosai offered to donate a kidney for his wife but, following
medical tests, he was shocked to learn that he was himself at risk of
kidney failure. This information proved a life-saver. He immediately
began treatment and saved his kidneys.
• Recalling how his wife's kidney failure was detected, Gosai said Indu
began complaining of pain in the lower abdomen four years ago.
• “She also had vomiting episodes,“ Gosai said. “Doctors finally
suggested a few tests which revealed that her creatinine level was
very high. The doctors suggested immediate treatment and asked
us to start looking for kidney donors.“

• Creatinine is produced during the metabolism of creatine
found in the blood, and is excreted with urine. When the
kidneys don't function properly , the creatinine can't be
excreted and, therefore, its level in the blood begins to rise,
leading to weakness and dehydration.
• “When doctors at the Institute of Kidney Disease and
Research Centre (IKDRC) got a matching kidney, they
conducted a transplant operation on Indu early in July this
year,“ said Gosai.“Till then she was on regular dialysis.“
IKDRC is attached to the city's Civil Hospital.
• Indu, 52 years old now, feels deeply indebted to her donor.
“I am still on antibiotics and have to take some other drugs
too but there has been significant improvement in my
condition,“ she said. “I strongly advocate organ donation.“
