2. Body composition
In the average young adult male,
18% of the body weight is protein and related
substances
7% is mineral
15% is fat
The remaining 60% is water.

3. Total body water (TBW)
It is approximately 60% of total body weight. In infants and
children, it is about 80% or higher. In the case of 70 kg body
weight, 42 L is water, 28 L present in ICF & 14 L in ECF. In
the ECF, 3 L fluid remains in plasma and remaining 11 L fluid
is present in interstitial space.

5. Extracellular fluids (ECF)
Definition: The fluids remain outside the cells are called extracellular
fluids.
ECF is about 20% of total body weight (average 14L in a 70 kg man). In
animal with a closed vascular system, it is divided into two components:
1. the interstitial fluid (75% of ECF) and
2. the circulating blood plasma (25% of ECF).
This extracellular fluid is in constant motion throughout the body. It is
transported rapidly in the circulating blood and then mixed between the
blood and the tissue fluids by diffusion through the capillary walls.

9. Intracellular fluids (ICF)
The fluids remain inside the cells are called intracellular fluids.
ICF is about 40% of total body weight (average 28 L in a 70 kg
man).
