Police Reflection Essay
I completed my ride along at the DeKalb County Police Department on Saturday, November 4th. I rode the night shift with Officer Harper. The
process took approximately two weeks to complete the background check and scheduling the ride along. Every night officers would stand in line and
were to be inspected by the sergeant. This was the time to double check that no one forgot anything. They inspect weapons, gear, and patrol cars to
make sure everything was working properly before their shift. After roll call, basic housekeeping is completed. Officers sit down while the sergeant or
lieutenant goes over anything for the watch to know. This includes suspicious people, cars, and activity that's being committed within their selected
beats. Sometimes they're informed of crime stats that officers need to be aware about. I was generally surprised how long this process took. Sergeant
and Luteninants were thorough with their inspection. Officer Harper was diligent in checking imperfections with his police vehicle, stating "I don't
want to be blamed for someone else's mistake." Once the shift started, Officer Harper was very friendly, offering to answer all of my questions. I
could tell that this wasn't his first ride along. The overall shift was slow. We spent a great proportion patrolling notoriously dangerous areas.
Officer Harper stated that he does this to keep streets at bay. Having a police presence in an area sometimes does work by the police itself. Officer
Harper spent most of the shift going around to local businesses in the area. He would talk to the cashiers or the regulars in the corner store just to
see how everything's been that day, or if something needs to be addressed. Officer Harper seems to be fairly connected with the community he
serves because he spent the first hour of his shift checking up on local faces. He described some of the local faces as "off of their rockers, but overall
harmless." For example, on his watch, I met a woman he calls the "one eyed lady." He created this name for her because she doesn't remember her
name, and she wore an eyepatch. She's been intoxicated, but officer Harper stated that she's always drunk. She has an uncanny tendency to urinate on

There is no trust between the community and the gang unit of the Newark
Police Department. The members of the gang unit insist that the citizens on the street know why they are out there and know they are there to protect
them, but that it not the case. For example, in one scene an officer is seen pulling at a man's waistband in order to look into his underwear! That is
extremely invasive, and not a part of the normal procedures that are allowed when making a reasonable suspicion stop. Officers are supposed to search
the outside of the clothing, not in the pants, and definitely not in their underwear.
The use of a task force does not intertwine the community and the police together. Especially when the officers are going out in unmarked vehicles, and
flashing their flashlights in random individuals' faces. I understand they are patrolling, and trying to get the guns and drugs off the street, but rather

As being a police officer becomes more and more scrutinized by the community and the media, it is difficult to find citizens to fill these positions.
When a lot of what officers do day to day currently is continually watched, it makes it hard to please the community and also keep the safety of
