16. So, some nice stories…but do I need to help??
Umm, Yes…Yes you do.
SCP Code of Ethics states “A pharmacist shall hold the health and safety of the public to be
the first consideration in the practice of his profession rendering each patient the full
measure of his ability as an essential health care practitioner”
If the disaster is a natural disaster, a man made disaster or disease outbreak related, we are
expected, by our Code of Ethics, to report to work. (Even in the face of personal risk.)
STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE – U of T Joint Center for Bioethics Pandemic Influenza

FIRST DUE TO SMOKE THEN DUE TO FIRE, MANY EVACUTED OUT IN THE END BY BOAT
WE AS A HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS ARE DEAMED ESSENTIAL DURING THESE TIME.
PLANES COULD NOT LAND, DRUGS COULD NOT COME BY ROAD. INSULIIN STOCK WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE
Fire concerns were similar to Ile a La Crosse
Because there was no power there was also no water. This closed the health center to evenrything except an emergeny. Hands could not be washed and toilets could not flush. We hauled water from the lake
The pneumonia outbreak led to 3 deaths in the community and many sick. Medication had to be rationed, you handed out insulin 1 penfill at a time.
Red cross have visas, contact them and their nurses when you need help with a patients medication.
Be sure to establish contact with their nurses quicky exchange phone numbers. Make yourself available for any meetings, enlist your staff for support.
Nothing can prepare you for this. I felt like my house was on fire, it was that personal. We are high volume, serving a high need patient population. There was no time to wallow that day or in the next few weeks. By the way show your volunteer heros in your community some love!
Methadone patients were served, only problem 3 of them could not read so did not know their drink was available. Social worker drove around looking for them.
Second picture is a carry bottle….
This room is a round shaped room in the health center. Tip for anyone looking to reno their pharmacy…”Round” is not a look you should be going for. Mckesson workers stay ed late, a bit on their Friday of the long weekend to help us in getting our first drug order in. There is only one other pharmacy in town, They were not in the position to take on our prescription vulume.
The first few weeks brought intense smoke. A lot of emergency supply rx’s for inhalers. Many started to voluntarily evacuate. By the end of the month pregnant women, children and people with ongoing chrinic medical conditions had left. The 2 long term care home and the group home had been moved south.
You may not always get warning you need to leave your store! Don’t forget to notify other pharmacies, they will need to locate you. Keep comminicating with staff…Ours spread out all over but we kept in touch almost daily regarding patients and repatriation. They will be stressed.
You need to try and secure your pharmacy because of the patient information and because of looters. When power outtages occur and phone lines are down remember your alarm system is most likely not working. Whne the store burned we had security monitor the scene for days until the burnt drugs were removed. Suring the forest fire when we had outages the army parked a tank infrot of the store so no one could gain access.
Back up your dtat base and take the disk with you (if your system is old school) think Nipawin.
MOH in alberta, cold lake ER. The red cross nurses in PA, Saskatoon and Regina. Our own doctors working at the evac centerc and working in LaRonge.
Note the Tang, yes I provided methadone during the evac. Narcotic cabinet.
This was the hospital. As a pharmacist we belong here, right in the group. Busiest health care worker. Transfers etc
Many pharmacies turned away patients because I was unable to give them transfer or confirm that indeed their medication was in my pharmacy drawer in the HOT ZONE.
