The HIV epidemic in Kenya disproportionately affects key
affected populations (KPs)—more specifically*
Men who have sex with men (MSM): 18.2% prevalence
Female sex workers (FSWs): 29.3% prevalence
People who inject drugs (PWID): 18.7% prevalence
Combating HIV among KPs is impeded by structural factors
such as
Stigma
Discrimination
These factors intensify the marginalization of KPs and deter
them from seeking health services
Background
4. To continually formulate relevant research questions, polices,
and programmatic decisions:
Policymakers, researchers, and managers need regular updates
on research and practical evidence
Documentation and dissemination of KP research and HIV
programming in Kenya needs to increase and information must be
readily accessible
In this context, an annotated bibliography of KP research and
programming was developed
Background (continued)
5. Enhance the formulation of
evidence-based KP policies
and strategies by enabling
easy access to research
evidence and information on
KP HIV-related programming
Main Goal
Develop an online annotated
biography for KP research and
programming, disaggregated
by sub-populations, county,
and sex
Create an online forum for
researchers, program
managers, and policymakers
to exchange information on KP
research and programs
Objectives
6. Design
Systematic literature review of published and grey literature on KP
research and other documentation; our initial search yielded
98 peer-reviewed articles
16 reports and abstracts (grey literature)
Identification of KP-focused organizations in Kenya yielded
40 organizations
These content will be updated quarterly
Eligibility criteria for selecting relevant materials
Published and unpublished materials relevant to KP research and
programming from the year 2000
Focused on MSM, PWID, FSWs, fisher-folk, and truck drivers
Methodology
7. Search methods
Iterative search in electronic databases of the social and biomedical
sciences
Databases searched:
PubMed adapted for MEDLINE (OVID)
Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRL)
Google scholar
CINAHL Plus Database (EBSCO)
EMBASE Biomedical database (adapted for Elsevier)
The Lancet
Africa Journals Online
Grey literature was searched online and physically
