4.4 FEATURES OF SERAPH AWAKEN
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Shophouses are terraced buildings that has one to three storeys high, which provide
a space for business on the ground floor, and a residence for the workers on the upper
floors. This arrangement provides convenience for the seller and security for the shop
(Georgetown World Heritage Site Inc. (n.d.)).
According to Taywade (2005), the word façade comes from the French word
“façade” , which means front or face. Facade is the visual element in front of the build-
ing that usually provide a general idea of the building’s interior funcon (Tika, 2018).
Shophouses in Malaysia was first started in Malacca by the
immigrant from china that come to malaysia to start their own
business and decided to reside in melaka during 18th century
(kelvin,2016).
Aer some me, the development of shophouse spread to
other Malaysia states and has the influenced of many states.

According to ICOMOS (2003), several guideline must be fol-
lowed when doing conservaon, such as:
• Each intervenon that will be made should, as far as possi
ble, respect the concept, techniques and historical value
of the original or earlier states of the structure and leaves
evidence that can be recognized in the future.
• Conservaon, reinforcement and restoraon of architec
tural heritage requires a mul-disciplinary approach.
• Value and authencity of architectural heritage cannot be
based on fixed criteria because the respect due to all cul
tures also requires that its physical heritage be considered
within the cultural context to which it belongs.
7.0 ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE
Islam teach their believer to protect the environment and
avoid excess use of it. In the Quran, Surah Al-A’raf, verse 31:
Say O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid,
and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not
those who commit excess. (Surah Al-A’raf: 31)
Therefore, to avoid the act of excessive, conservaon ac-
vity is strongly recommended, so the usage of new material
from environment to built a new construcon can be reduce
and get to maintain the natural beauty of environment.
