Før jeg kom til den danske EPALE NSS, arbejdede jeg på flere krigshistoriske museer, og senest ved det danske road directorate – the people in charge of the larger Danish roads.
Now: Adult Education. I guess I have som personal experience in the field…
Enough about me, I am here to tell you what has been going on in the EPALE community since we met in Reykjavik a year ago.
In short: EPALE is now faster, better looking and overall a more pleasant acquaintance than it was a year ago.
In the spring we were promised a server migration, which should speed the site up.
This migration was finally done in the late summer/autumn. And it really ment a lot! The site is way faster now, than ever before.
Moreover, there has been a ”visual refresh” of the platform – as seen on my slide. It now encompasses more of the EU-colors, but it is also a bit less antiquated in its appearance.
And it is becomming better, as new functionalities and more registered users are joining the site.
I want to say a bit about the plans for EPALE.
A lot is still undecided, or simply haven’t been developed yet, but it is clear, that the EU-Commission wants EPALE to play a bigger role in the coming Erasmus+ program.
The Commission plans to have 100.000 visitors by the end of 2020. 150.000 by the end of 2021.
And more than 80.000 members in 2020 – about 120.000 by end of 2021.
For those of you who know eTwinning, I believe what the Commission is trying to do, is to ”eTwin-up” EPALE somewhat.
Even though I believe the current budget talks are a bit difficult, we stille expect that the funds for the Erasmus+-programme will increase in the coming budget period. That also means, that the amount of mobilities will increase, and we will thus have the need for increased support for the Eramus+-projects.
EPALE is where we look
So how does all this help adults gain better digital competences?
First of all: EPALE is a platform for Adult Learning Professionals, hence adults with difficulties cannot use EPALE directly.
But EPALE is a giant database of knowledge and best practice, and one of the fokus areas is basic skills.
Therefore EPALE is in and by itself a tool to help enhancing digital skills and competences in adult learning.
As I said before, the plans for the future EPALE is to make an online course catalogue, but it is also to make the platform better suited for webinars, MOOCs and OERs.
Tests are running, but it is clearly the Commissions ambition, to use EPALE as an educational tool, as well as a knowledge database. Whether it will remain an educational tool for adult learning professionals, or we will start welcoming students too, I am not sure.
The last point I want to make, is that the Nordic NSSs are working closely together – and are also present in this room.
We make 4 thematic landing pages a year – a blog post with links in our different languages on different topics. Talking for all the Nordic NSSs – and without having talked to them about it before – I believe we could make a focus on digital skills on the Nordic Portal and through one or more landing pages.
