I
’d like to say a huge
thank you to readers
of The Voice in
Australia for emailing
me recently and
expressing their joy at
reading our magazine all
those miles away across
the World!
They receive their copies by post from local
residents and thoroughly enjoy reading what they
describe as a superb quality publication which is
most satisfying for myself and my wonderful band
of columnists and correspondents.
As I say to all of my advertisers and readers,
you really wouldn’t believe where copies of The
Voice get to!
Just a quick word on England’s performances
in The World Cup – I thought they were better
than expected and only a few defensive errors led
to our lack of a victory – but no cigar of course!
It proved we are now so far behind our world
rivals including countries such as Chile,
Switzerland, Nigeria and even the United States
that we cannot be regarded as a top footballing
nation – even though I believe we still have the
best supporters in the world.
Over the last few weeks we have lost two local
people who I have had the great fortune to have
known over many years. Being in their company
and chatting about horse racing which I have been
involved with for nearly 30 years was a wonderful
experience and now they are no longer with us.
I always used to chat with Christine Elks at
Uttoxeter Racecourse about racehorses. I used to
create syndicates for decades and luckily had great
success and she had been a shareholder in many
horses, particularly with former trainer Milton
Harris, who spoke at her funeral service. Together
with her partner Bob Borsley who I find to be one
of the nicest blokes around, they were the perfect
couple who used to live and breath racehorses.
What I didn’t know until I was contacted by
JCB is she was one of the leading lights at JCB
Earthmovers in Cheadle, being a Principal
Engineer and a mentor to hundreds of local young
engineers. Christine had made her way up the
ranks at JCB and enjoyed huge respect from her
employers. Of course, because she had the
personality which did not boast about her
achievements, she never mentioned this to me
which now makes me feel so much more proud of
her as a person. A wonderful woman and she was
only 43 years old......
We also lost Tony Johnson, 74, of Cheadle,
who was also another former employee at JCB
until his retirement. I have known Tony and his
wife Gwen for decades as they were members of
one of my horseracing syndicates along with their
loyal best friends Alan and Brenda Ward.
Tony was born in Uttoxeter and worked
tirelessly at JCB whilst enjoying his passion for the
racehorses, indeed all four of the quartet managed
to visit every racecourse in Britain which is an
incredible achievement. He was a member of
Uttoxeter Racecourse and very rarely did he miss
a meeting at his beloved local track alongside
Gwen, Alan and Brenda..
Tony was such a kind and gentle man, he
possessed a wonderful sense of humour and he
worked extremely hard at Cheadle Methodist
Church throughout his life.
We may have lost two exceptional local
people, but their impact on our community has
been huge in terms of friendship and work – I send
out my sincere thoughts to both families – you
must be very proud to have had Christine and
Tony in your lives
I hope you enjoy reading The Voice magazine.
I’ll speak to you next time...

Checkley Church staged a Garden Party at
beautiful Heath House, Lower Tean.
The event was threatened by inclement weather but the marquee was
relocated by organisers which proved to be a masterstroke.
Indeed, during the afternoon the sun came out along with a huge influx
of visitors to make the fundraising event a great success.
Checkley Church chairman Clive Smith thanked all stallholders and
everyone who made the event a great occasion.
Special thanks go to Ben Philips for use of the fantastic Heath House.

U
ttoxeter’s Imogen Evans was only seven
years old when she was very suddenly and
unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer around
Christmas 2013. She was diagnosed with stage 4
neuroblastoma, this extremely rare child cancer
has taken its toll on her body.
Imogen underwent the first stage of
Chemotherapy to fight against this disease at
North Staffordshire hospital. During this process
Imogen suffered with high temperatures and the
obvious side effects that is hair loss. These high
temperatures extend her already lengthy hospital
visits and sadly effect her usual bubbly character
and charisma. Imogen battles bravely on despite
this and shows everybody that knows her that she
is a brave, very grown up and the strongest fighter.
Imogen is a pupil at St Joseph’s Primary School
in Uttoxeter and still attends whenever she feels
well enough. Her teachers and school friends have
always made her feel welcome and make her
realise how special she is when they see her.
Through her constant daily struggles Imogen takes
part drama classes and brownie meetings after
school, but with such a busy social life
unfortunately after a few days her body feels the
strain and she becomes very tired and lethargic.
During one of these hospital stays she endured
numerous transfusions and morphine IV to numb
her pain, she became very subdued and tired, she
started to write little notes, Faye Mawer came
across one note entitled ‘Things to do when I get
better’.
She says “There were about five listed on this
little note pad. The first one was to go a cruise ship
for her next holiday. The next one was to have a
big party, I later found out that she wants this to be
a masquerade ball. Also visit Disney Land, Paris,
and finally to get hair and to get well soon.”
Faye went on to say “You could see that
Imogen’s drastically skinny body was suffering and
I really felt the urge to fulfil this list for her with the
help of her friends, family and anybody that knows
her. I would never have been able to get to where
we have now if I didn’t have the help from her
close friends.”
During the first stages of her diagnosis Imogen
spent many nights in hospital having all sorts of
tests and surgeries, this would be shared by
Imogens parents who took it in turn staying over
night with her at Birmingham hospital. When her
dad was there they would stay up late watching
Top Gear. Imogen developed a little soft spot for
Richard Hammond. Not knowing how to help
Faye Mawer set about contacting him, lots of
emails and letters were sent to finally get one back
from Amanda Hammond, Richards wife. Richard
and Amanda Hammond sent Imogen a box full of
Presents. There was a dvd with a personal note in
there from Richard to her about not laughing at
his silly shirt a signed picture, book and letter, all
the rest of the space in the box was filed with
chocolate. This cheered her up and she was amazed
to know that Richard Hammond actually knew
who she is.
Imogen’s road to recovery hasn’t been as
smooth as everybody had hoped for. With very
little change to her tumour from the first stage of
chemotherapy, her planned surgery had been
delayed. Imogen has now finished both stages of a
more intense form of chemo, called TVD. The
family are still awaiting these results. This has seen
Imogen struggle with her tiredness and other
common side effects such as a serious sore throat
and swollen tongue which lead to more stays in
hospital. Imogen only had to see her best friend
Bella who made her smile without fail and stayed
by her side throughout.
Many of her friends and family feel helpless
towards Imogen and their family so they have set
about fundraising to send this little girl anywhere
she wants to go. A local band called Judge Fudge,
friends of the family held a gig in aid of Imogen at
a local bar. This gig was a great success and saw
many of the family’s’ close friends show their
support and at the same time lighten the mood if
only for a few hours. Martin Rogers from the band
said “he was just happy to help in raising funds
that would be spent on Imogen, giving her
something to look forward to when all of this is
finished.”
So many local companies have helped this
happen in Uttoxeter, Tesco’s donated her a tablet to
keep her occupied whilst in hospital. Cinebowl
held a bowling night and put on a buffet with all
proceeds going to Imogen. Her brothers football
team brought her a lap top so that she can keep up
to date with school work. Pennline a promotional
merchandise and corporate clothing company
based in Derbyshire, supplied personalised t-shirts
to wear when holding these big events. Friends
held coffee mornings, raffles, head shaving, lads v
dad’s football events and just generally donating.
Future fund raising includes silicone bracelets in
Imogen’s favourite colour, silver. More coffee
mornings, and a family fun day with an auction
tomorrow, Saturday July 12th from 2pm. This
Family fun day is hoping to pull in a big crowd and
pull together as a close town in our support for not
only Imogen but her family who are also suffering
with her through this emotional time in her life.
Bucket collections have been arranged at
Uttoxeter race course by Sue and John Douglas
who have known the Evans family all their lives
and seen Imogen grow up. John says “Its the least
we can do to show our support for this brave little
girl and show the family that we are there for
them”.
The family fun day is being hosted by Faye
Mawer with the support of her friends. There will
be bouncy castles and slides, coconut shys, BBQ,
face painters, raffles and an auction later that day,
and so much more. There is FREE entry and to be
held at Oldfields Sports club, Springfield road,
Uttoxeter. This is a day you don’t want to miss! If
you cannot attend this event and you would like
to show your support by way of donation please
contact Faye Mawer at fayesmawer@hotmail.com
and on 07970 868 387 you can also find out more
on our Facebook page, Fundraising For Imogen.

Just the
perfect day...
A
fter 18 months of planning our
wedding we couldn’t believe the day
was actually here. We were lucky
enough to be able to extend our celebrations
over the whole weekend with our family and
friends.
Finishing work on that Thursday, and
receiving such an amazing send off from my
lovely clients and the girls at the salon,
Opulence, it all seemed a little surreal. I went
off to my mum’s house to paint my sisters
nails, who was one of my bridesmaids, and
my mums nails. And so it began!!
The following morning Liam and I went
for a little jog to clear our heads, then began
the mammoth task of packing the cars with
all the decorations and things to take up to
the venue, Stancliffe Hall in Darley Dale.
Once we got there, with family on hand to
help, we started to decorate the venue and set
the tables. It all started to take shape, and
look how we had imagined over the last few
months.
Once we had beautified everywhere, we
had time to relax in the pool with our family
and friends. It gave us time to really unwind
and let our hair down before we all had a
meal together that evening.
I have some lovely memories of that night,
seeing close friends and family come together
and get to know each other before the most
important day of our lives.

Saturday morning, I woke up hearing my nephew playing
outside in the hallway with his toys, it was so tempting to
peep outside the door and see what was going on but I knew
I couldn’t! My sister put up my hair for me, and did such a
perfect job. We had Kristian from Hair by Kristian in
Ashbourne to come and put up all the bridesmaids hair, again
doing such an amazing job. The photographer, Simon Bunney
of Bunney Photography, felt like part of the wedding as he
had already done two close friends weddings recently, so I
didn’t even notice him snapping away all morning! We had
also booked Danny from Carefully Crafted Media, as a
videographer so he was taking footage of the whole day also.
The morning seemed to go by so fast, it felt like we had so
much time, all of us doing each others make up, and then I
was told it was gone 12pm and we needed to all get into our
dresses. That’s when it started to sink in that I was going to
see Liam very soon! My bridesmaids helped me into my dress,
which I had got from the lovely Sarah at Rococo in
Melbourne, and handed me my beautiful bouquet from Secret
Garden in Uttoxeter. I was then left in the room on my own,
ready for my dad to come in and see me and my dress for the
first time. Talk about emotional!
We then all made our way down the stairs, where I spoke
briefly with the registrar. My legs started shaking, and I just
kept thinking I hope you can’t see it through my dress!!
We began walking to the Chapel entrance, and the
guitarist began playing Beneath Your Beautiful, Emeli Sande
and Labrinth. Seeing Liam waiting for me at the end of the
aisle made me feel the happiest I can ever remember feeling.
Once the ceremony was over we were lucky enough to have
some photographs outside as it had been raining. The sun
came out and made everywhere look fresh and alive. We had
some 3ft balloons, which I wanted to use in some of the
photos, so we had some fun trying to control them in the
wind!
After the wedding breakfast, which was catered for by
Coghlans in Chesterfield, my dad, Liam and Liam’s brother
and best man, Rhys, did their speeches, which had everyone

Just the perfectday...
On to the evening, and we had a magician to entertain before the party
really started. Sebastian Hunt was brilliant and pulled out some fantastic
tricks, keeping everyone wondering how he did it! Once all the evening guests
had arrived, we cut our cake, made by Zoe at Delicious Designs in Belper, and
then our band, Soul Street played our first dance For the First Time by The
Script. I don’t think I then left the dance floor for the rest of the evening! They
were fantastic and kept the dance floor full. We even had the saxophone player
and guitarist in the crowd at one point!
The following morning we all had breakfast together back in the chapel,
and reminisced about the day before. It was lovely to talk about all that had
happened, and hear about the fun everyone had.
When we came back off our honeymoon we had a gathering at my in laws,
with all the family and friends and we were able to look at all the photographs
and watch the wedding dvd, reliving it all again. It really was the best day of
my life, and I am so lucky to have met and now married my soul mate.

Lank’s Lore
By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin
Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
I
n the early 60’s whilst still at school I gave up my
newspaper round at Bob Harpers Stationes,
Printers & Newsagents in High Street and
handed it down to a mate of mine Phil ‘Chig’ Ufton
who whom I had recommended to Mr. Harper for
the position.
I progressed with my early working career as a
schoolboy by moving up market into the Butchery
trade. I obtained a job at Dewhursts the Butchers in
Market Square, Uttoxeter, managed by Mr. Jack
Clare which was next door to the shop (pictured
opposite), George Masons Grocers. working as a
delivery lad on a bike with a basket on the front and
also acting as a general shop dog’s body.
The premises at present are at present up for
lease after being the Waterloo House café for quite a
number of years.
A couple of mates of mine worked for George
Masons undertaking the same tasks as the ones I had
at Dewhurst’s again delivery goods by bike with a
basket on the front (shades of the Hovis advert on
TV!) and I also knew and remember some of the
staff pictured.
Shop’s of this kind were numerous in Uttoxeter
at this time prior to the advent of the supermarket
and could boast of some wonderful outlets and
coupled with it’s outdoor market and cattle market,
Uttoxeter was one of the areas favourite shopping
attractions.
The only store similar to what might have
resembled today’s supermarket was the Co-Op shop
in Carter Street which is now an undertakers
business.
My fellow columnist ‘Owd Ern’ mentioned a few
of them in his column a few weeks ago, although he
can relate a lot further back than I can, I still
remember the majority of them and later on I used to
print numerous items for the majority of them.
Woolworths which unfortunately stopped
trading recently was a king pin retailer in most
towns in those days and our High Street branch was
one of my favourites.
I can still remember the aroma when you walked
in of hot popcorn and nuts and the numerous dirt
cheap items for sale, it was an Alladin’s cave for me
but possibly not for my parents as I wanted to own
everything!
Other fascinations of the Woolworth’s store was
when you purchased anything the money was placed
into a tin with a screw lid onto a zip wire by the shop
assistant and despatched into the office in the corner
at the back of the store, where it was ‘zipped back’
with your change in, no fancy automatic tills in those
days to work out the mathematics for you.
I also remember other shops in the town having
a similar set up, Ormes and the Co-Op were two of
them.
It is a pity that nowadays the supermarkets, out
of town shopping areas and internet trading have
virtually, all but an handful of private traders, killed
the town centres, all that is left is an abundance of
charity shops, establishments selling a cornucopia of
cheap goods for a £1 or a pittance, multiple chain
shops which you find in every town all selling the
same stuff or take-a-way food establishments.
Sad times indeed compared to years ago when it
was a real joy to go shopping with a choice of
individual family run businesses selling a vast array
of unique goods and the proprietor treated you as a
valued individual not a figure on an accountants
balance sheet.
Till next time,

Down on the Farm

“A skylark wounded in the wing,
A cherubim does cease to sing”
William Blake
A
nd we, like many farmers, love nothing better
than to have a walk, looking at stock and
fields and birds, stopping to listen if we hear
something unusual. A couple of years ago, we had
an RSPB farm bird survey carried out, as it was a
few years since we’d introduced some
environmental changes and we thought it would be
interesting to see the outcome.
Many on the red/ amber lists ( species of
concern) were spotted or heard (including Skylark).
There was, however, no sign of Grey Partridge,
spotted previously. We have incorporated a patch of
wild bird seed into one of our fields and this has
been left to seed, providing food and cover for all
manner of species.
The unfortunate thing about Grey Partridge is
that they mate for life, unlike their Red-leg brothers
and this presents quite a problem- if one is lost by
predation,for example.
The three things all farmland birds require are
winter feed, summer feed and nesting sites and
farms are ideal places, with or without dedicated
schemes- over-wintered stubble fields or cropside
margins make for insect and seed rich habitats,
particularly as most birds are territorial.
Talking of birds, Cranes bill and Storks bill are
blossoming copiously along the prolific grass
verges- pinkish purple and members of the
Geranium family, their fruit is long and pointed,
like a beak.
Soft fruit and salad crops are ripening, ready
for picking, as are field crops and staffing is difficult
for those involved, as it is back-breaking work.
Of course, some farmers will be ‘making hay
while the sun shines’, needing a good few days of
dry, sunny weather for a good crop. The grass needs
to be turned several times so that it dries properly
and this is a good time for wildflowers to shed their
seed-that’s why hay meadows are so pretty.
We are moving our stock around to make use of
the grass in pasture fields and we are thinking about
weaning our lambs-we leave an old ewe in with
them to make moving them easier, as the ewe
should know where she is going(unless she decides
to be awkward- which she probably will!).
When the sun is at its strongest most of the
animals take shelter in the shade of trees, in full leaf
now and hedges. This makes counting them
difficult and luckily for Meg, it means longer out
walking round.

Beer and Cider
Festival
Probably the best yet!
The lager which claims to be ‘probably’ the best in the world would probably be
shunned by the fans of real ale and cider at Oldfields Sports and Social Club last
month, but they’re likely to agree that the annual Beer and Cider Festival was
probably the best yet.
The organisers were delighted with the takings, which will help pay for
prostate cancer screening for hundreds of local men, and drinkers were treated to
a two-day event for the first time.
The main event in a marquee on the sports ground was well-attended
throughout Saturday afternoon and evening, with the 24 beers and eight ciders
all but selling out. Profits – which all go to charity - were well up on last year.
Uttoxeter and Burton MP, Andrew Griffiths, spent all afternoon at the festival
and he praised the organisers for promoting British brewing.
The Friday evening before the main festival was set aside
for an Open Mic evening, with local singers performing their
own material and then combining at the end of the night for
an impromptu singalong.
Host Gary Hudson said: “It was the first time we’ve tried a
Friday evening event, and we didn’t expect huge numbers, but
those who came, including a great crowd from the Dog and
Partridge at Marchington, made it a night to remember.”
Musical highlights on the Saturday included local
performers Jason Callear, who judged the mood of the crowd
perfectly with a collection of rock covers, and Kate Copeland
singing jazz standards, followed by a marathon set from
headline band Upfront.
Simon Smith, the President of Uttoxeter Lions Club who
run the event, said: “It was a fantastic couple of days and we
were really lucky with the weather.
“A few hours before the start, one of our members was up
to his elbows in mud clearing a drain after a downpour
flooded the entrance. But there was barely a shower when the
crowds were there, and we all really enjoyed ourselves.”
The Uttoxeter Beer and Cider Festival is jointly run by the
Lions and Uttoxeter Rugby Club. This year’s charity is prostate
cancer and proceeds will pay for a second screening event to
help local men discover if they’re at risk.

0.75% OPENING OFFER FOR JULY
Property Voice
by Nathan Anderson-Dixon
Nathan is a local estate agent, with over16 years
of experience in the residential sales and lettings
market.
O
ver the last 12 months stamp duty takings
in the UK have risen sharply by a
whopping 1billion to 5.6 billion according
to experts at Lloyds.
A typical family will spend around £12,000 in
their lifetime on the tax when purchasing property,
and the average first time buyer now spends £2382
compared to £0 in 1998.
So why are we paying more tax? It’s simple,
house prices have risen dramatically over the last
fifteen years or so yet stamp duty thresholds
remain by and large the same. In fact the only
threshold to have risen is the entry level tax of 1%
which used to be payable over£60,000 and is now
applicable on purchases over £125,000. In 2000
you could buy a four bedroom detached modern
estate house with a double garage in uttoxeter for
anywhere between £80,000 to £90,000 paying 1%
in stamp duty, that’s £800 to £900 in tax. Now the
same property is likely to set you back by around
£265,000 to £275,000 with a stamp duty payment
of 3% that’s £7950 to £8250 in tax.
Homeowners throughout the country are being
forced to pay more due to the recent rise in house
prices, which are reported to be rising on average
by £220 per day.
It’s always puzzled me why stamp duty rises
sharply after the first threshold from 1% to 3%,
why stamp duty thresholds have never been
aligned to house price data so that people pay a
fair and relative amount compared to the average
house price.
If you are unsure about how much tax you
should pay visit www.gov.uk or one of the many
stamp duty tax calculators like
www.thisismoney.co.uk.
What you will pay when buying residential
properties:
£0 - £125,000 0%
£125,001 - £250,000 1%
£250,001 - £500,000 3%
£500,001 - £1 million 4%
Over £1 million - £2 million 5%
Over £2 million 7%
One question we get asked regularly is: How
do I market my property when it’s worth just over
the stamp duty?
You can raise the asking price to offer stamp
duty paid. That way this acts as an incentive for
potential buyers wishing to avoid the tax. Or you
can market just over negotiating a fair and
reasonable amount for your property, and then
related fixtures and fittings. This must be a fair and
reasonable amount for the items included within
the purchase price. Always take advice on this from
a local, reputable conveyancing solicitor.

Remembering Days gone by...
by Owd Ern
A bit out of bounds
B
agots Park is, I think in Abbotts Bromley and
Abbotts Bromley is on the border line to being
Brummie, at least not quite good old Stoke like
Uttch is, that bit of rubbish has very little to do with
the tale, it just makes me happy to get it off my chest!
Any way Archie Ball and myself would go up
through Bagots wood, up a very steep and slippery
path mainly on a nice sunny day to Bagots Park. We
just went when nobody knew where we roamed off
to.(possibly pleased to be rid of us both) this was not
a Park with swings and paddling pools, no, it was a
Deer Park home to Bagots Goats and a very big herd
of Deer.
One thousand acre’s, fenced out all the way round
with a cloven oak fence, ten foot high to stop the deer
jumping out. We would enter through a very, very
high gate onto a real adventure park.
Another world, a great expanse of six foot high
bracken, like some far off Jungle, it greeted you for as
far as the eye could see. If you followed the tracks
through this mass you would find big areas of rough
grazing and on these clearings you could usually find
a massive , I think they are called a flock of goats,
possibly someone cleverer than me will say it would
be a herd or some other fancy name ( does it really
matter?)(Typist’s note I’ve looked it up and it’s a
tribe!) or else a herd of deer, we won’t go into whether
that is right or wrong either (its right as it happens!).
Both Deer and Goats very impressive, the Deer stags
with their big antlers and the Billy goats with great
curved horns. Archie’s dad had two or three goats,
kept for their milk. He had quite a menagerie,
monkeys, parrots, rare banty hens, you name it, and
he’d got it.
So on Saturday, Archie came up with this brilliant
idea!? That we would try to catch one of Lord Bagots
Goats. He was to run one way, and idiot me, the other.
To cut one off, we both set off at a cracking pace that
would have left Roger Bannister standing. A goat may
look a bit stupid, but my goodness, they know how to
shift. Needless to say, we did no goat catching that
day and was never repeated again. We both just got
very short of breath and lay down and thought about
our crazy idea.
There was some very fine oak trees growing here
and there, in fact two very famous tree’s, one
supposedly with the largest spread in the land with
branches propped up. I think it was called Bagots Oak
and another one was the tallest. This was known as
the walking stick. Legend has it, that Bagots were
granted by William The Conqueror, as much land as
he could walk round in a day after walking all day he
stuck his stick in the ground and saying By God I can
not go no more, and the tale is his stick grew into The
Walking Stick Oak. It sounds a bit like one of my
tales.
Anyway Jackdaws had built a nest in a big Oak
tree, and Archie decided he needed an egg for his
collection. He said, you are better at climbing tree’s
than me, so idiot me got near to the top when the
branch I was standing on broke, and down I crashed.
Luckily landing on my back like a bag of muck. If I
had broken my neck I think Archie would have left
me to rot. There was a gamekeeper named Mr Knight,
and he lived in Goat Lodge a very unusual house,
decorated with Goats horns and possibly some deer
Antlers as well. This was later to become the home of
Phil Drabble.
Bagots Park across from Goat lodge and in Bagots
wood was a massive heronry with possibly 40 to 50
nests thank goodness Archie did not decide he wanted
an egg, as they built on the top of very tall oak trees.
After Mr Knight died, his wife became the
gamekeeper, we thought she looked a lot like a witch.
At the side of the house was, I would think an acre or
so called the daffodil lawn. We would lie on the
outskirts admiring the daffs and waiting for a sighting
of what we called the old witch. If she came out, we
soon disappeared. On the other side of the park, was
ruins of the deer hounds Kennels. They must have
been very super when built, a stream ran through
troughs to give a constant supply of water (Ingenious)
During the war a bombing range was built in the
middle of the park on one of our excursions, Archie
and me were strolling across the middle, when a voice
came over the tannoy from the observation post at the
end of the sight, saying “will you crackpots get off
before you are blown to bits!”
I believe the park has been reclaimed and made
profitable, but nowhere near as exciting!
So that’s another load of rubbish till next time
Just Tek care on thee sens
And bay good

by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter
Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions
Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a
senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at
Staffordshire University.
Summer’s here and the time is right for …
racing ducks?
It’s summer, which for some young people means
sun, sea, sand and sex – and that’s just in Tesco’s car
park! Whatever. It’s party time, with sunny evenings,
warm nights and a yearning for the not so innocent
fun once only hinted at in films like Cliff Richard’s
Summer Holiday.
For the rest of us any summer holiday is
welcome, whether or not we try driving a double-
decker London bus to Athens. Getting away from
work is good enough, even if the change is not quite
as good as a rest, because the kids are off school or
home from university and demanding your time and
money.
For members of Uttoxeter Lions Club there’s no
rest either, because there’s the Lark in the Park to
organise - a free afternoon of family fun at
Bramshall Road recreation ground on the Saturday
of August Bank Holiday weekend. We look forward
to seeing you there.
In the meantime, look out for members of the
Lions selling tickets for the duck race – that’s plastic
ducks, not the real thing. The race on the brook at
the end of the afternoon, with a cash prize for the
‘owner’ of the winning duck, is one of the more
bizarre highlights of the Lark in the Park event.
Lions and ducks – a killer combination
The mix of lions (the human kind) and ducks
(plastic) reminds me of a news report I once saw on
Australian TV which linked lions (real) and ducks
(real). I should explain that I take a keen
professional interest in the way they do news in
other countries - not just the techniques and
treatments of events in the news, but the choice of
which stories to report on – what we call news
values.
I’ve always believed that there’s so much death
and disaster in our news bulletins that when there is
an opportunity for a bit of fun you should seize it by
the throat with both hands, and shake it until the
pips squeak.
And so it was that an Australian reporter decided
that a story about ducks, even if it did involve their
massacre in large numbers, was a suitable cause for
mirth. He came up with one of the most memorable
– but at the same time morally questionable – lines
in television history.
The story involved the killing – by the equivalent
of park wardens – of thousands of a particular duck
species. Their numbers needed to be reduced, we
were told, because they were taking over one of the
big rivers near Sydney (I seem to remember it was
the Murray).
You may throw your arms up in horror at this
genocide of a species so fondly engrained in our
childhood. From Donald and Daffy – or even Count
Duckula – to the real ones we fed in the park, we
love ducks – and not just in orange sauce.
But these Aussie cousins of Jemima Puddleduck
were being slaughtered. Much as we Brits did, you
may recall, to the ruddy duck – a foreign interloper
and interbreeder, who was damaging the purity of
native species across Europe. The web-footed
lothario has been all but wiped out in the UK. A
ruddy outrage, if you ask me.
Don’t expect good taste from our Aussie friends
And back in Oz, their reporter was also getting
outraged, and came out with that killer line – one
which I don’t think a BBC reporter would dare
attempt. It was prompted by the grim facts of the
story. The cull involved rounding up the ducks,
gassing them and then delivering them to the local
zoo where they would be used as animal feed.
It’s a few years ago and I didn’t take notes, but
the reporter summed it up roughly as follows
(imagine a broad Aussie accent):
‘Throughout history, even the cruellest human
regimes have only either gassed their enemies or fed
them to the Lions, but never both - until now.’
Suddenly we’re in an episode of Radio 4’s Moral
Maze. Is it ever acceptable to invoke memories of
the Holocaust to inject humour into a story? Is it
acceptable to have a chuckle about the deaths of
thousands of innocent creatures? Should we ever use
humour in news stories, at all?
Now you’ll know I do believe there is a place for
humour in news, though to do it well is ruddy
difficult (there I go again). The other - more serious
- questions I leave to your ethical judgement.
A couple of things I am sure of, though. You can
never expect good taste from our Aussie cousins.
And no animals or birds will be injured in the Lark
in the Park duck race.

A
group of JCB women have dressed
up as cartoon favourites The
Smurfs for this year’s Race For
Life to raise thousands of pounds in
memory of a colleague who has died of
cancer.
A total of 76 female employees,
friends and family donned blue and white
body suits, pull on white caps and blonde
wigs and paint their faces blue as they
transform into ‘Smurfettes’ for the event
at Trentham Gardens on Tuesday, June
10.
They took part in the 5km race in
memory of Christine Elks, a Principal
Engineer at JCB Earthmovers in Cheadle,
who died in May, aged 43, after more
than a year-long battle with cancer of the
oesophagus.
Christine, of Uttoxeter, started work
with the company in 1989 and played a
leading role in product introductions and
enhancements. She also acted as a mentor
to young engineers and was well known
for taking the time to give advice and
technical support.
Today her partner Bob Borsley – who
works at the JCB World Parts Centre in
Uttoxeter – thanked the ladies for their
amazing support and the fundraising
tribute.
He said: “Christine had no idea that
this was being arranged but she would
have been very touched and humbled by
the gesture from her colleagues. Myself
and Christine’s parents, Edward and
Rhoda, would like to thank all the girls
for taking part in this special fundraising
event. It is fantastic that these wonderful
people are taking the time to support
such a great charity in this way.”
Calling themselves The ‘JCB
Smurfmovers’, the fundraising ladies will
be hoping to match or beat last year’s
total for Cancer Research UK of
£10,500. In the last five years they have
raised more than £40,000.
Organiser Sue Redding, PA to the JCB
Group Purchasing Director, who had a
mastectomy in 2008 and a second in
2012, says everyone involved has been
touched by cancer. Sue, of Stafford, said:
“We have been doing the Race for Life
for the past five years and have a
different theme each time. We’ve been the
JCB Tigger Diggers, JCB Pink Ladies, the
JCBees and the JCB Army. This year we
have decided to dedicate our efforts to
Christine who sadly lost her battle
against cancer last month. Christine
worked at JCB Earthmovers which is
why we have gone with the
‘Smurfmovers’ theme.”
She added: “Every girl in the group
knows someone whose life has been
touched by cancer which is why the event
receives so much support. Race for Life
is an amazing way to celebrate life but
also serves as a reminder for those who
have been lost to the disease. The JCB
Smurfmovers will definitely stand out
from the crowd but what’s inescapable is
the power and strength that comes from
thousands of women joining together to
kick cancer where it hurts.”
Sue also thanked everyone who has
donated so far, for this or past events, and
parcel carriers DHL who shipped The
Smurf costumes from China free of
charge.
Anyone wishing to make a donation
to the JCB Smurfmovers can visit the
website www.justgiving.com/the-jcb-
smurfmovers or text 70070, enter the
code SOOZ54 and pledge an amount.

Talking Pets
by Shoshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS
Shosh qualified from the Royal Veterinary College
in London, and has been working as a small animal
vet at Blue House Veterinary Centre in Biddulph
since 2009. She recently acquired a rescue cat named
Bagpuss.
O
ver the past two months we’ve looked at
obesity in dogs and cats, with some pointers
on how to assess your pet’s weight and body
condition score and a few tips on exercise.
This month, we’ll be taking a brief look at diet. I
can’t stress how important it is that you consult your
vet or veterinary nurse BEFORE you put your dog or
cat on a diet. Weight loss must be carried out safely,
and that means gradually - around 1-2% of weight
loss per week. Your vet or vet nurse will help you
achieve this at a safe pace. Dieting too quickly can be
just as dangerous for our pets as it can for us. When
calories are restricted too aggressively it can lead to
muscle wastage rather than fat loss. The loss of muscle
will slow metabolism and end up being
counterproductive for weight loss, as well as making
exercise more difficult. Cats whose food intake
decreases too dramatically can develop a condition
called hepatic lipidosis - sudden mobilisation and
accumulation of fat in the liver - which can be
extremely serious and requires hospitalisation. In
addition, we tend to see a behavioural impact in pets
who are dieted too quickly, including increased
begging, aggression or crying.
Make a list...
The first step to ensuring your pet is not taking in
too many calories is to ascertain exactly what they are
eating. Tot it up - putting pen to paper may help. It
often helps to see a list of what’s going in so that you
can see where to start cutting back food intake.
Make time to review the quantity of food you are
giving your dog or cat at mealtimes.
Check the packaging of the food you are giving
(or look on the manufacturer’s website) for the
feeding guidelines. How much are you giving,
compared to the recommended amount? Remember
that you need to feed for your pet’s slim weight, which
may not be the same as their current weight if they
are too heavy. For example, if your dog weighs 15kg
but should weigh 12kg, then feed for 12kg - not 15kg!
You may need to cut it back even more in time, but
this should be a good starting point. Here’s a
frightening fact regarding dry food amounts: for a cat,
less than 1 teaspoon of extra dry food daily can
amount to a pound of body fat in one year. And
remember, one pound of fat for a cat is like several
pounds for us!
What about extras? Be vigilant, and be honest.
Which of the following does your pet get? All will
contribute extra calories to the diet.
• dental chews*
• training treats*
• human food - Sunday dinner, Rich Tea biscuits,
morning toast etc etc etc!
• food dropped by children
• treats given by family, friends or fellow dog
walkers
• scavenged food
*Dental chews and training treats are an
important part of a dog’s diet, so you may not wish to
exclude them completely. Just make sure that you take
them into account when planning your dog’s daily
intake - cut back their meals to allow for them and
look into low-calorie versions.
The basics of reducing your pet’s calorie intake
• Always measure out dry food by weight. Use
kitchen scales to weigh out the recommended
amount in a beaker or cup. Mark the cup as a
reference point and use this cup every time you
feed your pet. This will avoid inaccurate
‘guesstimates’ and will also make it easier to
make changes as you can track exactly how
much dry food your pet is receiving. Be aware
that the amount might look pitifully small!
This is because dry food contains less water
and therefore more calories per gram, so large
amounts are not needed to fulfil daily intake
requirements. Resist the urge to ‘top it up’.
• Make sure your pet only gets one meal at a
time! Put one person in charge of feeding, or
create a system which stops accidental
doubling-up in busy households.
• Wet food is often a better choice for weight
loss in cats (personally I am an advocate of wet
diets for cats in any case). It can help them feel
fuller and tends to be lower in calories when
compared to dry food. Make the switch
gradually. For dry food addicts, some helpful
tips on persuading them to try wet can be
found here:
www.catinfo.org/#Transitioning_Dry_Food_A
ddicts_to_Canned_Food_
• Don’t free-feed dry food! While I appreciate
that some cats (and dogs, for that matter) are
‘grazers’ who like to nibble at their dish
throughout the day, it is imperative that they
do not consume more than their daily
allowance by doing so. A better approach is to
feed 3-4 small meals per day instead. If you
absolutely need to leave food down all day,
make sure you ONLY feed the recommended
daily amount and do not add extra.
• The hard bit: try not to give in to your pet’s
requests for food! If you are feeding them as
much as they need (which you will be, if you
go by the manufacturer’s guidelines), they’re
not going to starve, so don’t worry. By offering
them food to placate them you will only end
up rewarding the begging behaviour, ensuring
that it continues in the future.
• No treats are calorie free, but there are some
healthier options that may be given in
moderation. A small portion of cooked
vegetables, such as carrots, can be helpful to
bulk out meals for dogs: but DON’T overdo it
as it will fill them up and stretch their
stomachs, keeping them hungry in the future.
Fish4Dogs, for example, make some great
fishy treats called Sea Jerky which are lower in
fat than many other commercial treats.
Some pets require transitioning to a specialist
weight loss diet. This should always be done under
the guidance of your vet or veterinary nurse. If you
think your pet would benefit from such a diet, give
your practice a call to discuss it.
I hope this little series of articles has helped. I don’t
mean to go on, but remember to utilise your
veterinary practice. Most practices offer nurse weight
clinics free of charge - make the most of them!
Good Gardening
by Rosemary Roberts
T
his month I am going to talk about the plight of
the British bee. I am a beekeeper myself so it is
a subject close to my heart. We have already lost
two bee species in this country in the past 70 years.
Although they are not our only pollinators a continuing
decline in numbers of our bees would be detrimental
to the production of fruit, vegetables and flowers in our
gardens.
So, what can we do about it? Basically, we need to
garden with bees in mind. Firstly, flowers that are rich
in pollen and nectar are an essential component. Bees
do not like double flowered and complex types of
plants as they cannot reach the nectar deep in the
flower head. Instead they prefer the simpler forms and
favour a tasteful range of purples, whites, yellows and
blues. In order to appeal to different species of bee
provide a varied range of flower types. Some bees like
foraging from lip-shaped petals (such as those of
catmint) whilst others prefer the pincushion pads of
globe artichoke or scabious. There are many plants to
choose from. A good selection of plants that will
provide you with a bee friendly display from now until
October are globe thistle, Caucasian scabious, small
scabious, dwarf catmint, pineapple flower and globe
artichoke. We associate bees with summer, but some
bumblebees emerge on mild days in winter and will
need sustenance. Consider crocuses and snowdrops for
spring and colchicums and eucomis for autumn.
Alliums come into flower in June, taking over from the
spring bulbs. Shrubs such as compact varieties of
evergreen mahonia and sarcococca will provide both
pollen and permanent interest in your bed. Other
plants you may like to consider for summer interest
could be Echinacea, verbena bonariensis and lavender;
for autumn aster, colchicum and Japanese anemones;
hellebores, winter heathers and winter aconites; and for
spring aubrieta, bluebells and honesty. A full range of
bee friendly plants can be found at Rose Gardens Plant
Fairs held on the second Sunday of every month at
Bramshall Road Park, Uttoxeter. Please contact me at
the email address below for further details.
There are other things you can do to encourage bees
into your garden. If you have space, leave some areas
untidy. A dead wood pile for nesting in covered with a
few brambles for an excellent source of nectar and
pollen is ideal. Also, long grass will protect ground
nesting bumblebees from the lawn mover. Solitary bee
boxes are widely available to buy or try making one
yourself. Just make sure you put it up in a sunny spot
to ensure habitation. Finally, a good water supply is
necessary for bees to thrive. If you are lucky enough to
have a pond already you will realise the wildlife
benefits this brings. If not just put a shallow bowl of
water out for both birds and bees to make use of.
If you would like to ask me about any of the
topics covered in this or other editions please do not
hesitate to contact me on

Happy Gardening. Till next month.

I
t is countdown to the
2014 Party in the Park
event, which is on
Sunday, 3rd August at the
Cheadle Recreation
Ground. This year promises
to be extra special.
The main event is “It’s A
Knockout”. This is going to
be Fun. Its going to be wet,
soapy and slippery and it’s a
team game. There are only a
few weeks left to get your
team booked, so don’t miss
out on your chance to take
part.
Remember that it just
needs 6 of you. First talk it
over with your friends and
mates and call in to the
Town Clerks Office, The
Lodge, the Recreation
Ground, Tean Road and
sign yourselves in.
Remember, this is an
adult game. Strictly no one
under the age of 16 may
take part in this event.
The Party in the Park
will be opened by the
Cheadle Town Mayor who
will enter the Recreation
grounds along with our
now famous Party in the
Park Parade in time for the
official Opening Ceremony
at 1.00 pm. He will be
accompanied by Town
Mayor’s of Leek, Stone,
Ashbourne, Uttoxeter, plus
the Chairman of SMDC and
the Vice Chairman too.
A full programme of
events has been decided on
and they will take the form
of Inflatable attractions. We
will have a full Assault
course (This will
compliment It’s a
Knockout” for sure). The
Assault course is 45ft long
and 15ft wide and is
fantastic. We will also have
Aladdin’s Event Slide and
the children will love this.
We will have the usual
stalls etc which will of
course be booked with Ms
Hunter, the Town Clerk.
However, there is still time
to book a stall, so don’t
delay, do it today (book a
stall that is).
This year marks the
100th anniversary of World
War 1. We are hopefully
going to have an exhibition
in a marquee dedicated to
all from Cheadle who
served in this conflict.
The Cheadle Town
Council asks everyone
hoping to be involved with
the parade to meet at 12.30

Kate’s Kitchen
By Kate Cornes
Kate once worked as a professional chef for many
years but following a career change, is now
employed as a Veterinary Nurse. She still,
however, continues to enjoy cooking traditional
home cooked meals for herself, her husband and
2 young children. Kate is always on the lookout
for wholesome but simple recipes that can be
prepared in advance for busy working families.
I
first cooked this recipe many moons ago, at
school, in my home economics class. I still
remember carrying it carefully home in my
mothers favourite casserole dish, hoping and
praying that I didn’t drop the whole thing on the
pavement! Once safely home, I prepared some rice
and the whole family sat down at the table in
anticipation! Thank goodness it was a success and
it has been a favourite of mine ever since, although
it has been tweaked over the years!
Although this may seem like more of a winter
dish, I think that its nice for a bit of a change
through summer.
Beef Goulash
Serves 3-4 people (or 2 adults and 2 children)
Ingredients:
1 lb braising steak diced into approximately 2-
3cm size pieces
1 medium onion - diced
1 red pepper - sliced
1 garlic clove - crushed
2 tablespoons olive oil
150g button mushrooms - left whole
Approximately 400g chopped tomatoes (tinned
are fine)
2 tablespoons smoked paprika
½ tablespoon of flour
1 tablespoon tomato puree
½ tablespoon basil
½ tablespoon oregano
400ml beef stock
Salt and pepper
Method
Heat oil in a large pan on a high heat for a
minute, then add the diced beef.
Stir around until all sides are slightly browned
then add the onion and pepper. Continue to stir
until the pepper and onion have softened.
Add the garlic and turn down the heat to
medium for a minute before stirring in the paprika,
flour, tomato puree and herbs. Continue to stir and
then add the chopped tomatoes. Once everything
is starting to bubble in the pan, slowly add the
stock and continue to stir. The sauce should begin
to thicken. You may need to turn up the heat a little
to enable the sauce to bubble which will help it to
thicken. Be careful not to burn the bottom of the
pan.
Finally add the mushrooms and a pinch of salt
and pepper.
Transfer to an oven proof casserole dish with a
lid.
Place in the oven on a low heat 130˚C fan/
150˚C/Gas 2 and cook for 3-4 hours until the meat
is lovely and tender.
Serve with rice and crusty bread and a good
dollop of sour cream if you prefer, which I do !
Let The Voice Be With You
by Les Humphries of Rocester
T
he wind of change seems to be blowing up a
storm in political circles following UKIPS
resounding success in the recent local elections.
Was it a protest vote? Who knows ,but one thing is
certain, people are sick to death of the way the
Country is being run by the established parties, with
immigration and the European Union being top of
the bill.
Anyway, despite what happens in the next
General Election Nigel Farage has certainly shaken
up the establishment, no matter how much they, and
the media, have tried to discredit him. I don’t mind
admitting that I voted UKIP for the second time,
much to the chagrin of my old chum Gordon
Richardson who is the Trade Union Convenor at a
local Excavator Company.
I could never agree to back Tory policies,
although our local MP Andrew Griffiths is a really
nice chap. Labour leader Ed Milliband has had a
charisma bypass, and does not convince me he is the
man for the job, whilst the Lib Dems are just a wishy
washy bunch who will jump on any bandwagon to
get seats in the house. Whatever happens in the
General Election, I fear It’s a catch 22 situation and
is simply like re-arranging chairs on the Titanic.
In true British tradition it’s nice to see the
underdog rattling the cage of the smug establishment,
much like our own Nigel (Titterton) the Editor of this
very fine publication, which has become the envy of
the longer established local periodicals. All of whom
would love to take over The Voice!
That old British spirit was highlighted on June the
6th, when veterans of ‘D’ Day were joined by Heads
of State in Normandy, to mark the 70th Anniversary
of the landings. It provided some moving television,
watching men and women in their 80’s and 90’s re-
living their experiences of the day, reality Television
at it’s best. Big Brother eat your heart out, these were
real people re-living real experiences, which brought
tears to your eyes, rather than a bunch of boring
prima donnas laying around in a house for weeks on
end moaning. Get a life viewers, as long as you watch
this tripe they will keep putting it on.
The outstanding example of the British Bulldog
spirit came to the fore during this period, when 90
year old veteran Bernard Jordan, absconded from the
care home where he lived with his wife to attend the
Normandy reunion.
In all fairness, the care home had tried to get him
on to an official trip, but Bernard was unable to
make his mind up in time as to whether he wanted to
go or not. He then decided at the eleventh hour to go
anyway, and just up and went without telling anyone,
even his wife, becoming a bit of a celebrity as a result.
A much more exciting way of becoming a celebrity
than doing bugger all in a house with a bunch of
ner’e do wells don’t you think?
June the 6th was also a sad day for me as it saw
the funeral of Betty Stanton, the wife of my good
friend, the late John Stanton who recruited me into
the Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir. Betty was just
shy of her 80th Birthday, and her funeral service at St.
Michaels Rocester took place the day before her
daughter Janet was due to marry there (the wedding
has been postponed). Although now living in
Uttoxeter, Betty was a pillar of our Church in
Rocester, and her smiling face will be missed by all
of our congregation. Our thoughts are with the
family at this time.
Betty’s daughter Susan is one of the organisers of
the 1st World War week-end which St. Michaels is
putting of over the week-end of 9th and 10th of
August, who are still looking for artefacts to put on
show. Anyone who is willing to loan items related to
the 1914/1918 conflict please get in touch through
the Voice.
The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir are
currently rehearsing fortnightly at the Bishop Rawle
School in Cheadle to provide a Summer respite for
our Musical Director Janet and our accompianist
John.
Meanwhile if the gentleman who approached me
on Tesco car park before Easter with a view to
joining the Choir is reading this (sorry I did not get
your name), but you did say you were interested in
joining us, but where are you? Currently every other
Tuesday at the school 7:30 to 9:30 if you are still of
the same mind!
Rehearsal dates are Aug 26th and Sept 2nd, then
from 16th September from then on EVERY Tuesday.
We would love to see (and hear) you, as we would
anyone else. Simply turn up at the Bishop Rawle
School, have a listen, join in if you wish, we don’t
bite, have all been house trained, and more to the
point have a lot of fun.

Fashion Voice
by Angela Clinton of Uttoxeter
At long last Summer has
arrived.
L
ace is lovely and why, because
it’s feminine, romantic and a
beautiful fabric. You can wear it
with pumps at a picnic, or nude high
heel sandals for the evening. The Lace
dresses we have in Essentials are so
pretty in pastel shades. They can be
worn by any age and you can add a
cropped cardigan for arm and
shoulder coverage. ‘Washed look’
denim shorts surprise us on returning
each summer, although I do feel they
are sometimes worn too short.
Ninety-nine per cent of the male
population am sure would disagree
with me on that one.
The Spring/Summer fashion
shows were all about oversized,
unstructured and sporty styles. The
fashion designers have finally
embraced the fact that style and
comfort go together. I have
mentioned in several articles that
CRC, comfortable, relaxed and
confidence oozes style.
Cool Culottes have made a
comeback for Summer and it’s maybe
time to embrace this fabulous, wearable trend. The
wider leg style appears to look very similar to a
skirt, so this style will help you to
make a decision wether to buy them
or not.
The sweatshirt with a delicate
floral print fabric combines two of
the hottest trends. The sweatshirt can
be styled up with either pale jeans, or
a pencil skirt.
The mono print tailored cigarette
trousers are fabulous in many
different colours and we have them in
Essentials. They can be styled up with
a vest or cropped top to wear on the
beach,or for the evening,especially on
holiday. Customers aged from sixteen
to sixty are buying them and I think
this is where the comfort zone really comes into
play. Palazzo pants are on the high street and they
emphasise a tiny waist, but skim over the hips
because of the flared style.
The Baby Doll dress from 1966 is back. It was
full and flared into tent like shapes with cutaway
armholes, and/or a halter neck. This style works
well with apple shapes as it covers, but does not
cling to the troublesome areas. You can show your
slim arms and legs by wearing sleeveless and a
shorter length dress.

Karen’s Cake Corner
by Karen Hill
Chocolate and Peanut Butter Reese Cup
Birthday Cake
G
race, my daughter’s best friend, was having
her sixteenth birthday. I wanted to make
her a cake that was special and she would
always remember. Her favourite thing is Reese’s
peanut butter cups. I decided to make her a
chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, covered
with chocolate ganache. I decorated it with a giant
Reese’s peanut butter cup and some mini peanut
butter cups. Sprinkled with glitter, the cake looked
and tasted fantastic! It was a great success.
To make one 20cm two layer cake you will need
the following:-
230g 70% cocoa solids chocolate
170g unsalted butter
350g golden caster sugar
3 free range eggs (separated)
370g plain flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
½ tsp salt
500 ml semi skimmed milk
2 tsp vanilla extract
To make the peanut butter frosting you will
need:-
175g smooth peanut butter
110g unsalted butter
500g Icing sugar
60ml double cream
To make the chocolate ganache you will need the
following:-
250g good quality chocolate
235ml double cream
I also used 1 large Reese’s peanut butter cup,
mini Reese’s peanut butter cups and edible glitter.
Firstly, preheat your oven to 170˚C fan oven.
Grease and line two, deep sided 20 cm sandwich
tins. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for
approx. 2 minutes, or over a pan of simmering
water. Leave to cool slightly. Cream together the
butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, and then
gradually add the beaten egg yolks. Next add the
chocolate and mix well. Sift together the flour,
baking powder, bicarb of soda and salt, and add
one third to the mixture.
Mix together the milk and vanilla and add one
third to the mixture, then a third of the flour, then
milk, then flour and finally milk, mixing well after
each addition. In a clean bowl whisk the egg whites
until soft peaks form, then carefully fold into the
mixture. Divide evenly into the tins and bake for
approx. 30-40 mins, until a skewer comes out
clean. Remove from oven and leave to cool in the
tins for 10 mins until turning out onto wire racks.
To make the frosting, whip the peanut butter
and butter together until fluffy, and then gradually
add half the icing sugar. Next add the cream,
followed by the remaining icing sugar. Add more
cream if needed. When the cake is cooled,
sandwich the cake together and cover with the
frosting.
Next to make the chocolate ganache, bring the
cream to the boil over a medium heat, watching
carefully, and pour over the broken chocolate,
Whisk until smooth. Allow the ganache to cool
slightly before pouring over the cake. Start at the
centre of the cake and work outward.
When the cake had set, I decorated with the
Reese’s peanut butter cups and some gold edible
glitter. You can, of course, decorate how you like!

All Rights Reserved. Copyright Community Voice Publications Ltd. Designed and Produced by noel@sergeantdesign.com I ’d like to say a huge thank you to readers of The Voice in Australia for emailing me recently and expressing their joy at reading our magazine all those miles away across the World! They receive their copies by post from local residents and thoroughly enjoy reading what they describe as a superb quality publication which is most satisfying for myself and my wonderful band of columnists and correspondents. As I say to all of my advertisers and readers, you really wouldn’t believe where copies of The Voice get to! Just a quick word on England’s performances in The World Cup – I thought they were better than expected and only a few defensive errors led to our lack of a victory – but no cigar of course! It proved we are now so far behind our world rivals including countries such as Chile, Switzerland, Nigeria and even the United States that we cannot be regarded as a top footballing nation – even though I believe we still have the best supporters in the world. Over the last few weeks we have lost two local people who I have had the great fortune to have known over many years. Being in their company and chatting about horse racing which I have been involved with for nearly 30 years was a wonderful experience and now they are no longer with us. I always used to chat with Christine Elks at Uttoxeter Racecourse about racehorses. I used to create syndicates for decades and luckily had great success and she had been a shareholder in many horses, particularly with former trainer Milton Harris, who spoke at her funeral service. Together with her partner Bob Borsley who I find to be one of the nicest blokes around, they were the perfect couple who used to live and breath racehorses. What I didn’t know until I was contacted by JCB is she was one of the leading lights at JCB Earthmovers in Cheadle, being a Principal Engineer and a mentor to hundreds of local young engineers. Christine had made her way up the ranks at JCB and enjoyed huge respect from her employers. Of course, because she had the personality which did not boast about her achievements, she never mentioned this to me which now makes me feel so much more proud of her as a person. A wonderful woman and she was only 43 years old...... We also lost Tony Johnson, 74, of Cheadle, who was also another former employee at JCB until his retirement. I have known Tony and his wife Gwen for decades as they were members of one of my horseracing syndicates along with their loyal best friends Alan and Brenda Ward. Tony was born in Uttoxeter and worked tirelessly at JCB whilst enjoying his passion for the racehorses, indeed all four of the quartet managed to visit every racecourse in Britain which is an incredible achievement. He was a member of Uttoxeter Racecourse and very rarely did he miss a meeting at his beloved local track alongside Gwen, Alan and Brenda.. Tony was such a kind and gentle man, he possessed a wonderful sense of humour and he worked extremely hard at Cheadle Methodist Church throughout his life. We may have lost two exceptional local people, but their impact on our community has been huge in terms of friendship and work – I send out my sincere thoughts to both families – you must be very proud to have had Christine and Tony in your lives I hope you enjoy reading The Voice magazine. I’ll speak to you next time... Checkley Church staged a Garden Party at beautiful Heath House, Lower Tean. The event was threatened by inclement weather but the marquee was relocated by organisers which proved to be a masterstroke. Indeed, during the afternoon the sun came out along with a huge influx of visitors to make the fundraising event a great success. Checkley Church chairman Clive Smith thanked all stallholders and everyone who made the event a great occasion. Special thanks go to Ben Philips for use of the fantastic Heath House. U ttoxeter’s Imogen Evans was only seven years old when she was very suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer around Christmas 2013. She was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, this extremely rare child cancer has taken its toll on her body. Imogen underwent the first stage of Chemotherapy to fight against this disease at North Staffordshire hospital. During this process Imogen suffered with high temperatures and the obvious side effects that is hair loss. These high temperatures extend her already lengthy hospital visits and sadly effect her usual bubbly character and charisma. Imogen battles bravely on despite this and shows everybody that knows her that she is a brave, very grown up and the strongest fighter. Imogen is a pupil at St Joseph’s Primary School in Uttoxeter and still attends whenever she feels well enough. Her teachers and school friends have always made her feel welcome and make her realise how special she is when they see her. Through her constant daily struggles Imogen takes part drama classes and brownie meetings after school, but with such a busy social life unfortunately after a few days her body feels the strain and she becomes very tired and lethargic. During one of these hospital stays she endured numerous transfusions and morphine IV to numb her pain, she became very subdued and tired, she started to write little notes, Faye Mawer came across one note entitled ‘Things to do when I get better’. She says “There were about five listed on this little note pad. The first one was to go a cruise ship for her next holiday. The next one was to have a big party, I later found out that she wants this to be a masquerade ball. Also visit Disney Land, Paris, and finally to get hair and to get well soon.” Faye went on to say “You could see that Imogen’s drastically skinny body was suffering and I really felt the urge to fulfil this list for her with the help of her friends, family and anybody that knows her. I would never have been able to get to where we have now if I didn’t have the help from her close friends.” During the first stages of her diagnosis Imogen spent many nights in hospital having all sorts of tests and surgeries, this would be shared by Imogens parents who took it in turn staying over night with her at Birmingham hospital. When her dad was there they would stay up late watching Top Gear. Imogen developed a little soft spot for Richard Hammond. Not knowing how to help Faye Mawer set about contacting him, lots of emails and letters were sent to finally get one back from Amanda Hammond, Richards wife. Richard and Amanda Hammond sent Imogen a box full of Presents. There was a dvd with a personal note in there from Richard to her about not laughing at his silly shirt a signed picture, book and letter, all the rest of the space in the box was filed with chocolate. This cheered her up and she was amazed to know that Richard Hammond actually knew who she is. Imogen’s road to recovery hasn’t been as smooth as everybody had hoped for. With very little change to her tumour from the first stage of chemotherapy, her planned surgery had been delayed. Imogen has now finished both stages of a more intense form of chemo, called TVD. The family are still awaiting these results. This has seen Imogen struggle with her tiredness and other common side effects such as a serious sore throat and swollen tongue which lead to more stays in hospital. Imogen only had to see her best friend Bella who made her smile without fail and stayed by her side throughout. Many of her friends and family feel helpless towards Imogen and their family so they have set about fundraising to send this little girl anywhere she wants to go. A local band called Judge Fudge, friends of the family held a gig in aid of Imogen at a local bar. This gig was a great success and saw many of the family’s’ close friends show their support and at the same time lighten the mood if only for a few hours. Martin Rogers from the band said “he was just happy to help in raising funds that would be spent on Imogen, giving her something to look forward to when all of this is finished.” So many local companies have helped this happen in Uttoxeter, Tesco’s donated her a tablet to keep her occupied whilst in hospital. Cinebowl held a bowling night and put on a buffet with all proceeds going to Imogen. Her brothers football team brought her a lap top so that she can keep up to date with school work. Pennline a promotional merchandise and corporate clothing company based in Derbyshire, supplied personalised t-shirts to wear when holding these big events. Friends held coffee mornings, raffles, head shaving, lads v dad’s football events and just generally donating. Future fund raising includes silicone bracelets in Imogen’s favourite colour, silver. More coffee mornings, and a family fun day with an auction tomorrow, Saturday July 12th from 2pm. This Family fun day is hoping to pull in a big crowd and pull together as a close town in our support for not only Imogen but her family who are also suffering with her through this emotional time in her life. Bucket collections have been arranged at Uttoxeter race course by Sue and John Douglas who have known the Evans family all their lives and seen Imogen grow up. John says “Its the least we can do to show our support for this brave little girl and show the family that we are there for them”. The family fun day is being hosted by Faye Mawer with the support of her friends. There will be bouncy castles and slides, coconut shys, BBQ, face painters, raffles and an auction later that day, and so much more. There is FREE entry and to be held at Oldfields Sports club, Springfield road, Uttoxeter. This is a day you don’t want to miss! If you cannot attend this event and you would like to show your support by way of donation please contact Faye Mawer at fayesmawer@hotmail.com and on 07970 868 387 you can also find out more on our Facebook page, Fundraising For Imogen. • 10. Just the perfect day... A fter 18 months of planning our wedding we couldn’t believe the day was actually here. We were lucky enough to be able to extend our celebrations over the whole weekend with our family and friends. Finishing work on that Thursday, and receiving such an amazing send off from my lovely clients and the girls at the salon, Opulence, it all seemed a little surreal. I went off to my mum’s house to paint my sisters nails, who was one of my bridesmaids, and my mums nails. And so it began!! The following morning Liam and I went for a little jog to clear our heads, then began the mammoth task of packing the cars with all the decorations and things to take up to the venue, Stancliffe Hall in Darley Dale. Once we got there, with family on hand to help, we started to decorate the venue and set the tables. It all started to take shape, and look how we had imagined over the last few months. Once we had beautified everywhere, we had time to relax in the pool with our family and friends. It gave us time to really unwind and let our hair down before we all had a meal together that evening. I have some lovely memories of that night, seeing close friends and family come together and get to know each other before the most important day of our lives. • 11. Saturday morning, I woke up hearing my nephew playing outside in the hallway with his toys, it was so tempting to peep outside the door and see what was going on but I knew I couldn’t! My sister put up my hair for me, and did such a perfect job. We had Kristian from Hair by Kristian in Ashbourne to come and put up all the bridesmaids hair, again doing such an amazing job. The photographer, Simon Bunney of Bunney Photography, felt like part of the wedding as he had already done two close friends weddings recently, so I didn’t even notice him snapping away all morning! We had also booked Danny from Carefully Crafted Media, as a videographer so he was taking footage of the whole day also. The morning seemed to go by so fast, it felt like we had so much time, all of us doing each others make up, and then I was told it was gone 12pm and we needed to all get into our dresses. That’s when it started to sink in that I was going to see Liam very soon! My bridesmaids helped me into my dress, which I had got from the lovely Sarah at Rococo in Melbourne, and handed me my beautiful bouquet from Secret Garden in Uttoxeter. I was then left in the room on my own, ready for my dad to come in and see me and my dress for the first time. Talk about emotional! We then all made our way down the stairs, where I spoke briefly with the registrar. My legs started shaking, and I just kept thinking I hope you can’t see it through my dress!! We began walking to the Chapel entrance, and the guitarist began playing Beneath Your Beautiful, Emeli Sande and Labrinth. Seeing Liam waiting for me at the end of the aisle made me feel the happiest I can ever remember feeling. Once the ceremony was over we were lucky enough to have some photographs outside as it had been raining. The sun came out and made everywhere look fresh and alive. We had some 3ft balloons, which I wanted to use in some of the photos, so we had some fun trying to control them in the wind! After the wedding breakfast, which was catered for by Coghlans in Chesterfield, my dad, Liam and Liam’s brother and best man, Rhys, did their speeches, which had everyone laughing, crying and applauding simultaneously! It even ended in a song….! 11Let The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice take your business to 13,000 local homes. To advertise, call 01538 751629 or 07733 466 970.
  • 12. Just the perfectday... On to the evening, and we had a magician to entertain before the party really started. Sebastian Hunt was brilliant and pulled out some fantastic tricks, keeping everyone wondering how he did it! Once all the evening guests had arrived, we cut our cake, made by Zoe at Delicious Designs in Belper, and then our band, Soul Street played our first dance For the First Time by The Script. I don’t think I then left the dance floor for the rest of the evening! They were fantastic and kept the dance floor full. We even had the saxophone player and guitarist in the crowd at one point! The following morning we all had breakfast together back in the chapel, and reminisced about the day before. It was lovely to talk about all that had happened, and hear about the fun everyone had. When we came back off our honeymoon we had a gathering at my in laws, with all the family and friends and we were able to look at all the photographs and watch the wedding dvd, reliving it all again. It really was the best day of my life, and I am so lucky to have met and now married my soul mate. 12 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. Lank’s Lore By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters I n the early 60’s whilst still at school I gave up my newspaper round at Bob Harpers Stationes, Printers & Newsagents in High Street and handed it down to a mate of mine Phil ‘Chig’ Ufton who whom I had recommended to Mr. Harper for the position. I progressed with my early working career as a schoolboy by moving up market into the Butchery trade. I obtained a job at Dewhursts the Butchers in Market Square, Uttoxeter, managed by Mr. Jack Clare which was next door to the shop (pictured opposite), George Masons Grocers. working as a delivery lad on a bike with a basket on the front and also acting as a general shop dog’s body. The premises at present are at present up for lease after being the Waterloo House café for quite a number of years. A couple of mates of mine worked for George Masons undertaking the same tasks as the ones I had at Dewhurst’s again delivery goods by bike with a basket on the front (shades of the Hovis advert on TV!) and I also knew and remember some of the staff pictured. Shop’s of this kind were numerous in Uttoxeter at this time prior to the advent of the supermarket and could boast of some wonderful outlets and coupled with it’s outdoor market and cattle market, Uttoxeter was one of the areas favourite shopping attractions. The only store similar to what might have resembled today’s supermarket was the Co-Op shop in Carter Street which is now an undertakers business. My fellow columnist ‘Owd Ern’ mentioned a few of them in his column a few weeks ago, although he can relate a lot further back than I can, I still remember the majority of them and later on I used to print numerous items for the majority of them. Woolworths which unfortunately stopped trading recently was a king pin retailer in most towns in those days and our High Street branch was one of my favourites. I can still remember the aroma when you walked in of hot popcorn and nuts and the numerous dirt cheap items for sale, it was an Alladin’s cave for me but possibly not for my parents as I wanted to own everything! Other fascinations of the Woolworth’s store was when you purchased anything the money was placed into a tin with a screw lid onto a zip wire by the shop assistant and despatched into the office in the corner at the back of the store, where it was ‘zipped back’ with your change in, no fancy automatic tills in those days to work out the mathematics for you. I also remember other shops in the town having a similar set up, Ormes and the Co-Op were two of them. It is a pity that nowadays the supermarkets, out of town shopping areas and internet trading have virtually, all but an handful of private traders, killed the town centres, all that is left is an abundance of charity shops, establishments selling a cornucopia of cheap goods for a £1 or a pittance, multiple chain shops which you find in every town all selling the same stuff or take-a-way food establishments. Sad times indeed compared to years ago when it was a real joy to go shopping with a choice of individual family run businesses selling a vast array of unique goods and the proprietor treated you as a valued individual not a figure on an accountants balance sheet. Till next time, LANK Staff of George Masons Grocers Shop, Uttoxeter 1956, now occupied by the Divine Indian Restaurant, Market Place Left to Right: Winnie Crosby, Roy Sedgwick, Dorothy Mellor, Amy Bailey, Tom Flowers (Manager), Dorothy Wilne & David Tuner (Photo courtesy of Roy Sedgwick, Uttoxeter) Down on the Farm by Angela Sargent “A skylark wounded in the wing, A cherubim does cease to sing” William Blake A nd we, like many farmers, love nothing better than to have a walk, looking at stock and fields and birds, stopping to listen if we hear something unusual. A couple of years ago, we had an RSPB farm bird survey carried out, as it was a few years since we’d introduced some environmental changes and we thought it would be interesting to see the outcome. Many on the red/ amber lists ( species of concern) were spotted or heard (including Skylark). There was, however, no sign of Grey Partridge, spotted previously. We have incorporated a patch of wild bird seed into one of our fields and this has been left to seed, providing food and cover for all manner of species. The unfortunate thing about Grey Partridge is that they mate for life, unlike their Red-leg brothers and this presents quite a problem- if one is lost by predation, for example. The three things all farmland birds require are winter feed, summer feed and nesting sites and farms are ideal places, with or without dedicated schemes- over-wintered stubble fields or cropside margins make for insect and seed rich habitats, particularly as most birds are territorial. Talking of birds, Cranes bill and Storks bill are blossoming copiously along the prolific grass verges- pinkish purple and members of the Geranium family, their fruit is long and pointed, like a beak. Soft fruit and salad crops are ripening, ready for picking, as are field crops and staffing is difficult for those involved, as it is back-breaking work. Of course, some farmers will be ‘making hay while the sun shines’, needing a good few days of dry, sunny weather for a good crop. The grass needs to be turned several times so that it dries properly and this is a good time for wildflowers to shed their seed-that’s why hay meadows are so pretty. We are moving our stock around to make use of the grass in pasture fields and we are thinking about weaning our lambs-we leave an old ewe in with them to make moving them easier, as the ewe should know where she is going(unless she decides to be awkward- which she probably will!). When the sun is at its strongest most of the animals take shelter in the shade of trees, in full leaf now and hedges. This makes counting them difficult and luckily for Meg, it means longer out walking round. • 20. Uttoxeter Beer and Cider Festival Probably the best yet! The lager which claims to be ‘probably’ the best in the world would probably be shunned by the fans of real ale and cider at Oldfields Sports and Social Club last month, but they’re likely to agree that the annual Beer and Cider Festival was probably the best yet. The organisers were delighted with the takings, which will help pay for prostate cancer screening for hundreds of local men, and drinkers were treated to a two-day event for the first time. The main event in a marquee on the sports ground was well-attended throughout Saturday afternoon and evening, with the 24 beers and eight ciders all but selling out. Profits – which all go to charity - were well up on last year. Uttoxeter and Burton MP, Andrew Griffiths, spent all afternoon at the festival and he praised the organisers for promoting British brewing. The Friday evening before the main festival was set aside for an Open Mic evening, with local singers performing their own material and then combining at the end of the night for an impromptu singalong. Host Gary Hudson said: “It was the first time we’ve tried a Friday evening event, and we didn’t expect huge numbers, but those who came, including a great crowd from the Dog and Partridge at Marchington, made it a night to remember.” Musical highlights on the Saturday included local performers Jason Callear, who judged the mood of the crowd perfectly with a collection of rock covers, and Kate Copeland singing jazz standards, followed by a marathon set from headline band Upfront. Simon Smith, the President of Uttoxeter Lions Club who run the event, said: “It was a fantastic couple of days and we were really lucky with the weather. “A few hours before the start, one of our members was up to his elbows in mud clearing a drain after a downpour flooded the entrance. But there was barely a shower when the crowds were there, and we all really enjoyed ourselves.” The Uttoxeter Beer and Cider Festival is jointly run by the Lions and Uttoxeter Rugby Club. This year’s charity is prostate cancer and proceeds will pay for a second screening event to help local men discover if they’re at risk. 20 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. Thank you for your support. 0.75% OPENING OFFER FOR JULY Property Voice by Nathan Anderson-Dixon Nathan is a local estate agent, with over16 years of experience in the residential sales and lettings market. O ver the last 12 months stamp duty takings in the UK have risen sharply by a whopping 1billion to 5.6 billion according to experts at Lloyds. A typical family will spend around £12,000 in their lifetime on the tax when purchasing property, and the average first time buyer now spends £2382 compared to £0 in 1998. So why are we paying more tax? It’s simple, house prices have risen dramatically over the last fifteen years or so yet stamp duty thresholds remain by and large the same. In fact the only threshold to have risen is the entry level tax of 1% which used to be payable over£60,000 and is now applicable on purchases over £125,000. In 2000 you could buy a four bedroom detached modern estate house with a double garage in uttoxeter for anywhere between £80,000 to £90,000 paying 1% in stamp duty, that’s £800 to £900 in tax. Now the same property is likely to set you back by around £265,000 to £275,000 with a stamp duty payment of 3% that’s £7950 to £8250 in tax. Homeowners throughout the country are being forced to pay more due to the recent rise in house prices, which are reported to be rising on average by £220 per day. It’s always puzzled me why stamp duty rises sharply after the first threshold from 1% to 3%, why stamp duty thresholds have never been aligned to house price data so that people pay a fair and relative amount compared to the average house price. If you are unsure about how much tax you should pay visit www.gov.uk or one of the many stamp duty tax calculators like www.thisismoney.co.uk. What you will pay when buying residential properties: £0 - £125,000 0% £125,001 - £250,000 1% £250,001 - £500,000 3% £500,001 - £1 million 4% Over £1 million - £2 million 5% Over £2 million 7% One question we get asked regularly is: How do I market my property when it’s worth just over the stamp duty? You can raise the asking price to offer stamp duty paid. That way this acts as an incentive for potential buyers wishing to avoid the tax. Or you can market just over negotiating a fair and reasonable amount for your property, and then related fixtures and fittings. This must be a fair and reasonable amount for the items included within the purchase price. Always take advice on this from a local, reputable conveyancing solicitor. Remembering Days gone by... by Owd Ern A bit out of bounds B agots Park is, I think in Abbotts Bromley and Abbotts Bromley is on the border line to being Brummie, at least not quite good old Stoke like Uttch is, that bit of rubbish has very little to do with the tale, it just makes me happy to get it off my chest! Any way Archie Ball and myself would go up through Bagots wood, up a very steep and slippery path mainly on a nice sunny day to Bagots Park. We just went when nobody knew where we roamed off to.(possibly pleased to be rid of us both) this was not a Park with swings and paddling pools, no, it was a Deer Park home to Bagots Goats and a very big herd of Deer. One thousand acre’s, fenced out all the way round with a cloven oak fence, ten foot high to stop the deer jumping out. We would enter through a very, very high gate onto a real adventure park. Another world, a great expanse of six foot high bracken, like some far off Jungle, it greeted you for as far as the eye could see. If you followed the tracks through this mass you would find big areas of rough grazing and on these clearings you could usually find a massive , I think they are called a flock of goats, possibly someone cleverer than me will say it would be a herd or some other fancy name ( does it really matter?)(Typist’s note I’ve looked it up and it’s a tribe!) or else a herd of deer, we won’t go into whether that is right or wrong either (its right as it happens!). Both Deer and Goats very impressive, the Deer stags with their big antlers and the Billy goats with great curved horns. Archie’s dad had two or three goats, kept for their milk. He had quite a menagerie, monkeys, parrots, rare banty hens, you name it, and he’d got it. So on Saturday, Archie came up with this brilliant idea!? That we would try to catch one of Lord Bagots Goats. He was to run one way, and idiot me, the other. To cut one off, we both set off at a cracking pace that would have left Roger Bannister standing. A goat may look a bit stupid, but my goodness, they know how to shift. Needless to say, we did no goat catching that day and was never repeated again. We both just got very short of breath and lay down and thought about our crazy idea. There was some very fine oak trees growing here and there, in fact two very famous tree’s, one supposedly with the largest spread in the land with branches propped up. I think it was called Bagots Oak and another one was the tallest. This was known as the walking stick. Legend has it, that Bagots were granted by William The Conqueror, as much land as he could walk round in a day after walking all day he stuck his stick in the ground and saying By God I can not go no more, and the tale is his stick grew into The Walking Stick Oak. It sounds a bit like one of my tales. Anyway Jackdaws had built a nest in a big Oak tree, and Archie decided he needed an egg for his collection. He said, you are better at climbing tree’s than me, so idiot me got near to the top when the branch I was standing on broke, and down I crashed. Luckily landing on my back like a bag of muck. If I had broken my neck I think Archie would have left me to rot. There was a gamekeeper named Mr Knight, and he lived in Goat Lodge a very unusual house, decorated with Goats horns and possibly some deer Antlers as well. This was later to become the home of Phil Drabble. Bagots Park across from Goat lodge and in Bagots wood was a massive heronry with possibly 40 to 50 nests thank goodness Archie did not decide he wanted an egg, as they built on the top of very tall oak trees. After Mr Knight died, his wife became the gamekeeper, we thought she looked a lot like a witch. At the side of the house was, I would think an acre or so called the daffodil lawn. We would lie on the outskirts admiring the daffs and waiting for a sighting of what we called the old witch. If she came out, we soon disappeared. On the other side of the park, was ruins of the deer hounds Kennels. They must have been very super when built, a stream ran through troughs to give a constant supply of water (Ingenious) During the war a bombing range was built in the middle of the park on one of our excursions, Archie and me were strolling across the middle, when a voice came over the tannoy from the observation post at the end of the sight, saying “will you crackpots get off before you are blown to bits!” I believe the park has been reclaimed and made profitable, but nowhere near as exciting! So that’s another load of rubbish till next time Just Tek care on thee sens And bay good Owd Ern Have I got news for you by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University. Summer’s here and the time is right for … racing ducks? It’s summer, which for some young people means sun, sea, sand and sex – and that’s just in Tesco’s car park! Whatever. It’s party time, with sunny evenings, warm nights and a yearning for the not so innocent fun once only hinted at in films like Cliff Richard’s Summer Holiday. For the rest of us any summer holiday is welcome, whether or not we try driving a double- decker London bus to Athens. Getting away from work is good enough, even if the change is not quite as good as a rest, because the kids are off school or home from university and demanding your time and money. For members of Uttoxeter Lions Club there’s no rest either, because there’s the Lark in the Park to organise - a free afternoon of family fun at Bramshall Road recreation ground on the Saturday of August Bank Holiday weekend. We look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, look out for members of the Lions selling tickets for the duck race – that’s plastic ducks, not the real thing. The race on the brook at the end of the afternoon, with a cash prize for the ‘owner’ of the winning duck, is one of the more bizarre highlights of the Lark in the Park event. Lions and ducks – a killer combination The mix of lions (the human kind) and ducks (plastic) reminds me of a news report I once saw on Australian TV which linked lions (real) and ducks (real). I should explain that I take a keen professional interest in the way they do news in other countries - not just the techniques and treatments of events in the news, but the choice of which stories to report on – what we call news values. I’ve always believed that there’s so much death and disaster in our news bulletins that when there is an opportunity for a bit of fun you should seize it by the throat with both hands, and shake it until the pips squeak. And so it was that an Australian reporter decided that a story about ducks, even if it did involve their massacre in large numbers, was a suitable cause for mirth. He came up with one of the most memorable – but at the same time morally questionable – lines in television history. The story involved the killing – by the equivalent of park wardens – of thousands of a particular duck species. Their numbers needed to be reduced, we were told, because they were taking over one of the big rivers near Sydney (I seem to remember it was the Murray). You may throw your arms up in horror at this genocide of a species so fondly engrained in our childhood. From Donald and Daffy – or even Count Duckula – to the real ones we fed in the park, we love ducks – and not just in orange sauce. But these Aussie cousins of Jemima Puddleduck were being slaughtered. Much as we Brits did, you may recall, to the ruddy duck – a foreign interloper and interbreeder, who was damaging the purity of native species across Europe. The web-footed lothario has been all but wiped out in the UK. A ruddy outrage, if you ask me. Don’t expect good taste from our Aussie friends And back in Oz, their reporter was also getting outraged, and came out with that killer line – one which I don’t think a BBC reporter would dare attempt. It was prompted by the grim facts of the story. The cull involved rounding up the ducks, gassing them and then delivering them to the local zoo where they would be used as animal feed. It’s a few years ago and I didn’t take notes, but the reporter summed it up roughly as follows (imagine a broad Aussie accent): ‘Throughout history, even the cruellest human regimes have only either gassed their enemies or fed them to the Lions, but never both - until now.’ Suddenly we’re in an episode of Radio 4’s Moral Maze. Is it ever acceptable to invoke memories of the Holocaust to inject humour into a story? Is it acceptable to have a chuckle about the deaths of thousands of innocent creatures? Should we ever use humour in news stories, at all? Now you’ll know I do believe there is a place for humour in news, though to do it well is ruddy difficult (there I go again). The other - more serious - questions I leave to your ethical judgement. A couple of things I am sure of, though. You can never expect good taste from our Aussie cousins. And no animals or birds will be injured in the Lark in the Park duck race.

A total of 76 female employees, friends and family donned blue and white body suits, pull on white caps and blonde wigs and paint their faces blue as they transform into ‘Smurfettes’ for the event at Trentham Gardens on Tuesday, June 10. They took part in the 5km race in memory of Christine Elks, a Principal Engineer at JCB Earthmovers in Cheadle, who died in May, aged 43, after more than a year-long battle with cancer of the oesophagus. Christine, of Uttoxeter, started work with the company in 1989 and played a leading role in product introductions and enhancements. She also acted as a mentor to young engineers and was well known for taking the time to give advice and technical support. Today her partner Bob Borsley – who works at the JCB World Parts Centre in Uttoxeter – thanked the ladies for their amazing support and the fundraising tribute. He said: “Christine had no idea that this was being arranged but she would have been very touched and humbled by the gesture from her colleagues. Myself and Christine’s parents, Edward and Rhoda, would like to thank all the girls for taking part in this special fundraising event. It is fantastic that these wonderful people are taking the time to support such a great charity in this way.” Calling themselves The ‘JCB Smurfmovers’, the fundraising ladies will be hoping to match or beat last year’s total for Cancer Research UK of £10,500. In the last five years they have raised more than £40,000. Organiser Sue Redding, PA to the JCB Group Purchasing Director, who had a mastectomy in 2008 and a second in 2012, says everyone involved has been touched by cancer. Sue, of Stafford, said: “We have been doing the Race for Life for the past five years and have a different theme each time. We’ve been the JCB Tigger Diggers, JCB Pink Ladies, the JCBees and the JCB Army. This year we have decided to dedicate our efforts to Christine who sadly lost her battle against cancer last month. Christine worked at JCB Earthmovers which is why we have gone with the ‘Smurfmovers’ theme.” She added: “Every girl in the group knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer which is why the event receives so much support. Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also serves as a reminder for those who have been lost to the disease. The JCB Smurfmovers will definitely stand out from the crowd but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to kick cancer where it hurts.” Sue also thanked everyone who has donated so far, for this or past events, and parcel carriers DHL who shipped The Smurf costumes from China free of charge. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the JCB Smurfmovers can visit the website www.justgiving.com/the-jcb- smurfmovers or text 70070, enter the code SOOZ54 and pledge an amount. Talking Pets by Shoshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS Shosh qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in London, and has been working as a small animal vet at Blue House Veterinary Centre in Biddulph since 2009. She recently acquired a rescue cat named Bagpuss. O ver the past two months we’ve looked at obesity in dogs and cats, with some pointers on how to assess your pet’s weight and body condition score and a few tips on exercise. This month, we’ll be taking a brief look at diet. I can’t stress how important it is that you consult your vet or veterinary nurse BEFORE you put your dog or cat on a diet. Weight loss must be carried out safely, and that means gradually - around 1-2% of weight loss per week. Your vet or vet nurse will help you achieve this at a safe pace. Dieting too quickly can be just as dangerous for our pets as it can for us. When calories are restricted too aggressively it can lead to muscle wastage rather than fat loss. The loss of muscle will slow metabolism and end up being counterproductive for weight loss, as well as making exercise more difficult. Cats whose food intake decreases too dramatically can develop a condition called hepatic lipidosis - sudden mobilisation and accumulation of fat in the liver - which can be extremely serious and requires hospitalisation. In addition, we tend to see a behavioural impact in pets who are dieted too quickly, including increased begging, aggression or crying. Make a list... The first step to ensuring your pet is not taking in too many calories is to ascertain exactly what they are eating. Tot it up - putting pen to paper may help. It often helps to see a list of what’s going in so that you can see where to start cutting back food intake. Make time to review the quantity of food you are giving your dog or cat at mealtimes. Check the packaging of the food you are giving (or look on the manufacturer’s website) for the feeding guidelines. How much are you giving, compared to the recommended amount? Remember that you need to feed for your pet’s slim weight, which may not be the same as their current weight if they are too heavy. For example, if your dog weighs 15kg but should weigh 12kg, then feed for 12kg - not 15kg! You may need to cut it back even more in time, but this should be a good starting point. Here’s a frightening fact regarding dry food amounts: for a cat, less than 1 teaspoon of extra dry food daily can amount to a pound of body fat in one year. And remember, one pound of fat for a cat is like several pounds for us! What about extras? Be vigilant, and be honest. Which of the following does your pet get? All will contribute extra calories to the diet. • dental chews* • training treats* • human food - Sunday dinner, Rich Tea biscuits, morning toast etc etc etc! • food dropped by children • treats given by family, friends or fellow dog walkers • scavenged food *Dental chews and training treats are an important part of a dog’s diet, so you may not wish to exclude them completely. Just make sure that you take them into account when planning your dog’s daily intake - cut back their meals to allow for them and look into low-calorie versions. The basics of reducing your pet’s calorie intake • Always measure out dry food by weight. Use kitchen scales to weigh out the recommended amount in a beaker or cup. Mark the cup as a reference point and use this cup every time you feed your pet. This will avoid inaccurate ‘guesstimates’ and will also make it easier to make changes as you can track exactly how much dry food your pet is receiving. Be aware that the amount might look pitifully small! This is because dry food contains less water and therefore more calories per gram, so large amounts are not needed to fulfil daily intake requirements. Resist the urge to ‘top it up’. • Make sure your pet only gets one meal at a time! Put one person in charge of feeding, or create a system which stops accidental doubling-up in busy households. • Wet food is often a better choice for weight loss in cats (personally I am an advocate of wet diets for cats in any case). It can help them feel fuller and tends to be lower in calories when compared to dry food. Make the switch gradually. For dry food addicts, some helpful tips on persuading them to try wet can be found here: www.catinfo.org/#Transitioning_Dry_Food_A ddicts_to_Canned_Food_ • Don’t free-feed dry food! While I appreciate that some cats (and dogs, for that matter) are ‘grazers’ who like to nibble at their dish throughout the day, it is imperative that they do not consume more than their daily allowance by doing so. A better approach is to feed 3-4 small meals per day instead. If you absolutely need to leave food down all day, make sure you ONLY feed the recommended daily amount and do not add extra. • The hard bit: try not to give in to your pet’s requests for food! If you are feeding them as much as they need (which you will be, if you go by the manufacturer’s guidelines), they’re not going to starve, so don’t worry. By offering them food to placate them you will only end up rewarding the begging behaviour, ensuring that it continues in the future. • No treats are calorie free, but there are some healthier options that may be given in moderation. A small portion of cooked vegetables, such as carrots, can be helpful to bulk out meals for dogs: but DON’T overdo it as it will fill them up and stretch their stomachs, keeping them hungry in the future. Fish4Dogs, for example, make some great fishy treats called Sea Jerky which are lower in fat than many other commercial treats. Some pets require transitioning to a specialist weight loss diet. This should always be done under the guidance of your vet or veterinary nurse. If you think your pet would benefit from such a diet, give your practice a call to discuss it. I hope this little series of articles has helped. I don’t mean to go on, but remember to utilise your veterinary practice. Most practices offer nurse weight clinics free of charge - make the most of them! Good Gardening by Rosemary Roberts T his month I am going to talk about the plight of the British bee. I am a beekeeper myself so it is a subject close to my heart. We have already lost two bee species in this country in the past 70 years. Although they are not our only pollinators a continuing decline in numbers of our bees would be detrimental to the production of fruit, vegetables and flowers in our gardens. So, what can we do about it? Basically, we need to garden with bees in mind. Firstly, flowers that are rich in pollen and nectar are an essential component. Bees do not like double flowered and complex types of plants as they cannot reach the nectar deep in the flower head. Instead they prefer the simpler forms and favour a tasteful range of purples, whites, yellows and blues. In order to appeal to different species of bee provide a varied range of flower types. Some bees like foraging from lip-shaped petals (such as those of catmint) whilst others prefer the pincushion pads of globe artichoke or scabious. There are many plants to choose from. A good selection of plants that will provide you with a bee friendly display from now until October are globe thistle, Caucasian scabious, small scabious, dwarf catmint, pineapple flower and globe artichoke. We associate bees with summer, but some bumblebees emerge on mild days in winter and will need sustenance. Consider crocuses and snowdrops for spring and colchicums and eucomis for autumn. Alliums come into flower in June, taking over from the spring bulbs. Shrubs such as compact varieties of evergreen mahonia and sarcococca will provide both pollen and permanent interest in your bed. Other plants you may like to consider for summer interest could be Echinacea, verbena bonariensis and lavender; for autumn aster, colchicum and Japanese anemones; hellebores, winter heathers and winter aconites; and for spring aubrieta, bluebells and honesty. A full range of bee friendly plants can be found at Rose Gardens Plant Fairs held on the second Sunday of every month at Bramshall Road Park, Uttoxeter. Please contact me at the email address below for further details. There are other things you can do to encourage bees into your garden. If you have space, leave some areas untidy. A dead wood pile for nesting in covered with a few brambles for an excellent source of nectar and pollen is ideal. Also, long grass will protect ground nesting bumblebees from the lawn mover. Solitary bee boxes are widely available to buy or try making one yourself. Just make sure you put it up in a sunny spot to ensure habitation. Finally, a good water supply is necessary for bees to thrive. If you are lucky enough to have a pond already you will realise the wildlife benefits this brings. If not just put a shallow bowl of water out for both birds and bees to make use of. If you would like to ask me about any of the topics covered in this or other editions please do not hesitate to contact me on rose@rosegardensplantfairs.co.uk Happy Gardening. Till next month. Rosemary

Kate’s Kitchen By Kate Cornes Kate once worked as a professional chef for many years but following a career change, is now employed as a Veterinary Nurse. She still, however, continues to enjoy cooking traditional home cooked meals for herself, her husband and 2 young children. Kate is always on the lookout for wholesome but simple recipes that can be prepared in advance for busy working families. I first cooked this recipe many moons ago, at school, in my home economics class. I still remember carrying it carefully home in my mothers favourite casserole dish, hoping and praying that I didn’t drop the whole thing on the pavement! Once safely home, I prepared some rice and the whole family sat down at the table in anticipation! Thank goodness it was a success and it has been a favourite of mine ever since, although it has been tweaked over the years! Although this may seem like more of a winter dish, I think that its nice for a bit of a change through summer. Beef Goulash Serves 3-4 people (or 2 adults and 2 children) Ingredients: 1 lb braising steak diced into approximately 2- 3cm size pieces 1 medium onion - diced 1 red pepper - sliced 1 garlic clove - crushed 2 tablespoons olive oil 150g button mushrooms - left whole Approximately 400g chopped tomatoes (tinned are fine) 2 tablespoons smoked paprika ½ tablespoon of flour 1 tablespoon tomato puree ½ tablespoon basil ½ tablespoon oregano 400ml beef stock Salt and pepper Method Heat oil in a large pan on a high heat for a minute, then add the diced beef. Stir around until all sides are slightly browned then add the onion and pepper. Continue to stir until the pepper and onion have softened. Add the garlic and turn down the heat to medium for a minute before stirring in the paprika, flour, tomato puree and herbs. Continue to stir and then add the chopped tomatoes. Once everything is starting to bubble in the pan, slowly add the stock and continue to stir. The sauce should begin to thicken. You may need to turn up the heat a little to enable the sauce to bubble which will help it to thicken. Be careful not to burn the bottom of the pan. Finally add the mushrooms and a pinch of salt and pepper. Transfer to an oven proof casserole dish with a lid. Place in the oven on a low heat 130˚C fan/ 150˚C/Gas 2 and cook for 3-4 hours until the meat is lovely and tender. Serve with rice and crusty bread and a good dollop of sour cream if you prefer, which I do ! Let The Voice Be With You by Les Humphries of Rocester T he wind of change seems to be blowing up a storm in political circles following UKIPS resounding success in the recent local elections. Was it a protest vote? Who knows ,but one thing is certain, people are sick to death of the way the Country is being run by the established parties, with immigration and the European Union being top of the bill. Anyway, despite what happens in the next General Election Nigel Farage has certainly shaken up the establishment, no matter how much they, and the media, have tried to discredit him. I don’t mind admitting that I voted UKIP for the second time, much to the chagrin of my old chum Gordon Richardson who is the Trade Union Convenor at a local Excavator Company. I could never agree to back Tory policies, although our local MP Andrew Griffiths is a really nice chap. Labour leader Ed Milliband has had a charisma bypass, and does not convince me he is the man for the job, whilst the Lib Dems are just a wishy washy bunch who will jump on any bandwagon to get seats in the house. Whatever happens in the General Election, I fear It’s a catch 22 situation and is simply like re-arranging chairs on the Titanic. In true British tradition it’s nice to see the underdog rattling the cage of the smug establishment, much like our own Nigel (Titterton) the Editor of this very fine publication, which has become the envy of the longer established local periodicals. All of whom would love to take over The Voice! That old British spirit was highlighted on June the 6th, when veterans of ‘D’ Day were joined by Heads of State in Normandy, to mark the 70th Anniversary of the landings. It provided some moving television, watching men and women in their 80’s and 90’s re- living their experiences of the day, reality Television at it’s best. Big Brother eat your heart out, these were real people re-living real experiences, which brought tears to your eyes, rather than a bunch of boring prima donnas laying around in a house for weeks on end moaning. Get a life viewers, as long as you watch this tripe they will keep putting it on. The outstanding example of the British Bulldog spirit came to the fore during this period, when 90 year old veteran Bernard Jordan, absconded from the care home where he lived with his wife to attend the Normandy reunion. In all fairness, the care home had tried to get him on to an official trip, but Bernard was unable to make his mind up in time as to whether he wanted to go or not. He then decided at the eleventh hour to go anyway, and just up and went without telling anyone, even his wife, becoming a bit of a celebrity as a result. A much more exciting way of becoming a celebrity than doing bugger all in a house with a bunch of ner’e do wells don’t you think? June the 6th was also a sad day for me as it saw the funeral of Betty Stanton, the wife of my good friend, the late John Stanton who recruited me into the Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir. Betty was just shy of her 80th Birthday, and her funeral service at St. Michaels Rocester took place the day before her daughter Janet was due to marry there (the wedding has been postponed). Although now living in Uttoxeter, Betty was a pillar of our Church in Rocester, and her smiling face will be missed by all of our congregation. Our thoughts are with the family at this time. Betty’s daughter Susan is one of the organisers of the 1st World War week-end which St. Michaels is putting of over the week-end of 9th and 10th of August, who are still looking for artefacts to put on show. Anyone who is willing to loan items related to the 1914/1918 conflict please get in touch through the Voice. The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir are currently rehearsing fortnightly at the Bishop Rawle School in Cheadle to provide a Summer respite for our Musical Director Janet and our accompianist John. Meanwhile if the gentleman who approached me on Tesco car park before Easter with a view to joining the Choir is reading this (sorry I did not get your name), but you did say you were interested in joining us, but where are you? Currently every other Tuesday at the school 7:30 to 9:30 if you are still of the same mind! Rehearsal dates are Aug 26th and Sept 2nd, then from 16th September from then on EVERY Tuesday. We would love to see (and hear) you, as we would anyone else. Simply turn up at the Bishop Rawle School, have a listen, join in if you wish, we don’t bite, have all been house trained, and more to the point have a lot of fun. TTFN Les...

Fashion Voice by Angela Clinton of Uttoxeter At long last Summer has arrived. L ace is lovely and why, because it’s feminine, romantic and a beautiful fabric. You can wear it with pumps at a picnic, or nude high heel sandals for the evening. The Lace dresses we have in Essentials are so pretty in pastel shades. They can be worn by any age and you can add a cropped cardigan for arm and shoulder coverage. ‘Washed look’ denim shorts surprise us on returning each summer, although I do feel they are sometimes worn too short. Ninety-nine per cent of the male population am sure would disagree with me on that one. The Spring/Summer fashion shows were all about oversized, unstructured and sporty styles. The fashion designers have finally embraced the fact that style and comfort go together. I have mentioned in several articles that CRC, comfortable, relaxed and confidence oozes style. Cool Culottes have made a comeback for Summer and it’s maybe time to embrace this fabulous, wearable trend. The wider leg style appears to look very similar to a skirt, so this style will help you to make a decision wether to buy them or not. The sweatshirt with a delicate floral print fabric combines two of the hottest trends. The sweatshirt can be styled up with either pale jeans, or a pencil skirt. The mono print tailored cigarette trousers are fabulous in many different colours and we have them in Essentials. They can be styled up with a vest or cropped top to wear on the beach,or for the evening, especially on holiday. Customers aged from sixteen to sixty are buying them and I think this is where the comfort zone really comes into play. Palazzo pants are on the high street and they emphasise a tiny waist, but skim over the hips because of the flared style. The Baby Doll dress from 1966 is back. It was full and flared into tent like shapes with cutaway armholes, and/or a halter neck. This style works well with apple shapes as it covers, but does not cling to the troublesome areas. You can show your slim arms and legs by wearing sleeveless and a shorter length dress. Angela, Essential Clothing. Karen’s Cake Corner by Karen Hill Chocolate and Peanut Butter Reese Cup Birthday Cake G race, my daughter’s best friend, was having her sixteenth birthday. I wanted to make her a cake that was special and she would always remember. Her favourite thing is Reese’s peanut butter cups. I decided to make her a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, covered with chocolate ganache. I decorated it with a giant Reese’s peanut butter cup and some mini peanut butter cups. Sprinkled with glitter, the cake looked and tasted fantastic! It was a great success. To make one 20cm two layer cake you will need the following:- 230g 70% cocoa solids chocolate 170g unsalted butter 350g golden caster sugar 3 free range eggs (separated) 370g plain flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp salt 500 ml semi skimmed milk 2 tsp vanilla extract To make the peanut butter frosting you will need:- 175g smooth peanut butter 110g unsalted butter 500g Icing sugar 60ml double cream To make the chocolate ganache you will need the following:- 250g good quality chocolate 235ml double cream I also used 1 large Reese’s peanut butter cup, mini Reese’s peanut butter cups and edible glitter. Firstly, preheat your oven to 170˚C fan oven. Grease and line two, deep sided 20 cm sandwich tins. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for approx. 2 minutes, or over a pan of simmering water. Leave to cool slightly. Cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, and then gradually add the beaten egg yolks. Next add the chocolate and mix well. Sift together the flour, baking powder, bicarb of soda and salt, and add one third to the mixture. Mix together the milk and vanilla and add one third to the mixture, then a third of the flour, then milk, then flour and finally milk, mixing well after each addition. In a clean bowl whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form, then carefully fold into the mixture. Divide evenly into the tins and bake for approx. 30-40 mins, until a skewer comes out clean. Remove from oven and leave to cool in the tins for 10 mins until turning out onto wire racks. To make the frosting, whip the peanut butter and butter together until fluffy, and then gradually add half the icing sugar. Next add the cream, followed by the remaining icing sugar. Add more cream if needed. When the cake is cooled, sandwich the cake together and cover with the frosting. Next to make the chocolate ganache, bring the cream to the boil over a medium heat, watching carefully, and pour over the broken chocolate, Whisk until smooth. Allow the ganache to cool slightly before pouring over the cake. Start at the centre of the cake and work outward. When the cake had set, I decorated with the Reese’s peanut butter cups and some gold edible glitter. You can, of course, decorate how you like!
