Dear Reader,
It’s that time of year
again! Christmas is
nearly upon us and
the hectic countdown
begins until the Big
Day!
But what a fantastic year it has been
weatherwise! We have enjoyed a wonderful
sunny Summer which extended into late
October and perhaps now the festive period
has crept up behind us and given us all a
shock!
As I always say at this time of year, try to
take it as easy as you can in the build-up to
Christmas and don’t let everything
overwhelm you which is easy to do.
Just spend as much as you afford and if
certain toys or gifts are too expensive, well
there are thousands more available within
your budget.
As I always say in the last Voice magazine
before Christmas, please spare a thought for
those folk who cannot afford to enjoy
Christmas in this time of deep austerity. Take
a step back, and think about what you can
do for others.
Perhaps nip round to the elderly
neighbours, especially the ones who live on
their own, and take a bottle of whisky, a box
of biscuits, a box of chocolates or something
nice. I guarantee the smiling faces of the
recipients will make your Christmas!
And, of course, for many of us who have
lost loved ones, Christmas will be a most
poignant occasion – a time to reflect our
warmest memories of those who have left us...
Christmas is such a special time of the
year and we all deserve to enjoy ourselves
after the hard grind of stressful work
throughout the year, so let’s love the
wonderful sights of children’s faces when
Santa Claus has hopefully visited and let’s all
celebrate together – it won’t be long before
we are battling against the Arctic Winter
Weather will it?
To everyone, everywhere, I wish you all A
Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year!
I’ll speak to you in the New Year and I do
hope you have enjoyed reading The Voice in
2014...

8. Uttoxeter Choral Society’s Concert
at St. Mary’s Parish Church
There was a good attendance when Uttoxeter Choral Society held a
concert which honoured those who died in WW1.
As special guests for the evening the Chairman of the local branch of the
Royal British Legion Mr Philip Hudson and his wife attended.
The atmosphere of this special occasion was greatly enhanced by the
decoration of the church, with poppies, foliage and candles provided by
ladies of the choir. The programme of music for the evening was a fitting
tribute to those who fought so bravely and died to protect our freedoms.. It
included music by Joseph Rheinberger, his Stabat Mater and two anthems.
Joseph Rheinberger is a Victorian composer, famous for his organ music, he
also wrote operas and choral music. As far as we are aware from our records
the Choral Society has never in its long history performed music by this
composer.
The second half of the concert comprised a performance of the choral
suite from “The Armed Man” a mass for peace by Karl Jenkins. This has
proved to be a popular and relevant work at this time of remembrance, in
fact, Mr Hudson said in his speech at the end of the evening that it was one
of his favourite pieces of music. Poems and readings, chosen by the choir’s
conductor Anthony Rose, interspersed the separate movements and these
were read by members of the choir. The overall effect was very moving.
The Choral Society was conducted, as usual by their musical director
Anthony Rose, and the excellent organ accompaniment was provided
throughout by Darren Hogg. He also played two organ solos in the first
half of the concert..

14. Uttoxeter Leisure Centre
redevelopment nears
completion as opening
date is announced
As the end of the year approaches and the refurbishment of the leisure centre continues
at pace, East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced that Uttoxeter Leisure
Centre will reopen to public on Saturday 17th January 2015.
Councillor Robert Hardwick, Deputy Leader for Cultural Services, said: “The leisure centre
has really started to take shape over the last few months and I’m pleased to say that we are
now entering the final stages of development.
“I’m delighted that we are able to announce the opening date and contribute to the
anticipation that is really starting to build for the opening of new facility.”
September:
Service installation began in September, which included building control services and pool
plant equipment. External works
included cladding and block work to
wrap the building and join the various
building parts together.
October:
Work continued in October on
many aspects of the new facility such
as service installation, pool tiling and
external block work. In addition,
organised staff tours allowed existing
staff members to have a look around
the new building, which were well
received.
November:
During November efforts will
continue to get the building sealed off
from the outside weather, with internal
work then progressing at speed. Tiling,
and final surface finishes will both be
the main focus, with the building fast
approaching its final stages of
development.
Site Manager, Steve Skadorwa of
Bowmer Kirkland Building Services,
appointed contractor, has continued to
supervise the project and commenting
on the progress to date:
“We are really pushing ahead with
the different aspects of this exciting
project, and many teams of contractors
are all playing their part in creating this
fantastic new facility. Work has
progressed well on the various
elements of the building, and the
finishing touches are starting to take
shape”.
The doors will open to the general
public on Saturday 17th January 2014
after a short opening ceremony.
Customers will be able to enjoy free
swimming and court use throughout
the day. The centre will commence its
new regular opening times from
Sunday 18th January.
Further details will be released in
due course with specific times and
activities which will take place on the
official opening day.
Residents can keep up to date with
progress of the project in a number of
ways. By visiting our website
www.eaststaffsbc.gov.uk, by visiting

16. Just the perfect day...
On March the 10th
2012 Danny proposed
to me at Chester Zoo
an unusual place for most
people but perfect for us as it
was where we first told each
other that we loved one
another. I knew Danny was
planning something as he was
quiet the whole drive there
and in a hurry to get to a
certain spot before all the
crowds came past.
We knew we wanted to
marry at Keele Hall from the
minute we stepped foot in
there, having a dad as a
wedding photographer
definitely helped as it was the
first place he suggested and
the only place we needed to see. Danny
suggested fairly early on that he liked the idea
of something different for the theme and
suggested Alice in Wonderland, I loved the
idea so we got organising, which was an easy
task as we’re both so organised. Fast forward
two years and as I started to get ready it all
started to sink it that today was the day and
I couldn’t stop smiling. The bridesmaids
arrived early and with some amazing hair
and make-up being done by Claire from
Jeremy Miles and Esther from Opulence they
made us feel a million dollars, then to top it
off I got to put on my beautiful phoenix
wedding gown from Aisle of Brides which
made me feel like a real princess, and the
finishing touch had to be my custom made
Alice in Wonderland themed shoes.
Just as I got finished we
heard the beeps and toots of
the Italian Job mini’s coming
up the road and all the
neighbours came out to see us
and wave us off. The drive to
Keele from Uttoxeter was
hilarious, they played some
great music and because we
were early they filled some
time by going round several
roundabouts a few times
whilst beeping the horns and
waving to everyone as we
went past.
I walked down the aisle to
Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
and couldn’t stop smiling as I
saw Danny at the end of the
aisle and seeing all our friends
and family standing there to share the
happiest day of our lives. After a short but
lovely ceremony we were finally Mr and Mrs
Alkins and I don’t think our smiles could
stretch anymore as we walked back down the
aisle together. At the end of the aisle we were
whisked away by Wayne - The Staffordshire
Toastmaster who helped us relax and enjoy
the whole day. Before we headed out in to the
beautiful gardens of Keele Hall we had a
sneak pick at our amazing wedding cake, it
was stunning! It was classic from a distance
but as you got closer you saw all the hidden
elements of the Alice in Wonderland Classics
and to top it off there was the cake topper of
me, Danny and our Shar-Pei Bella who stood
pride of place.

Your wedding day is all about you
and people who are special to you.
That’s why my photography records
all the emotion and fun of the day.
I work quietly and professionally
from the bride getting ready up to
the f irst dance capturing the
formal and informal moments
that are important to you.

We then headed outside for our
photos and Keele Hall has so many
beautiful areas to take photos from
we were spoilt for choice. After the
photos it was time for our wedding
breakfast. Wayne got everyone in a
great mood and got them all cheering
for our entrance. The food was
exceptional and was topped off by
some lovely speeches afterwards by
my dad, Dannny and the best man
Jon.T
he rest of the afternoon as with
the whole day just seemed to fly by,
we then mingled with all the guests
and it was great to see everyone. As
the evening drew on we felt so
blessed to have so many loved ones
with us and watching us as we did
our first dance to Rebecca Ferguson’s
“nothing’s real but love” and then
there was a surprise dance with my
dad to Heartlands “I loved her first”
- it was the first time I’d cried all day
and as I looked up not only was I
crying but also my dad and everyone
else in the room. Then followed our
disco that got everyone dancing for
the whole night. Before we knew it
was midnight and we decided to call
it a night. We left as the party was
still going on strong and we could
hear the sound of the evening guests
singing along which left us giggling
in our taxi back to the hotel room.
I have never smiled so much in
my life and I don’t think either of us
could have asked for a better day nor
a better person to share it with. The
perfect day was followed by a perfect
honeymoon. We then spent three
weeks travelling the south of America
visiting: Las Vegas, Texas, New
Orleans, Washington DC and New
York to name a few of the states we
visited.
The life of Mr and Mrs Alkins
really was an adventure and now
back home the adventure is only just
starting as we are now happy to
announce that we are expecting our
first child in May.

Anniversary bonfire goes
with a bigger bang
The fortieth Uttoxeter Bonfire and
Firework Display has been described by
visitors as the best ever.
The organisers, Uttoxeter Lions Club, were
delighted by messages of thanks and support
on social media calling the firework display
‘wonderful’, ‘ spectacular’ and ‘brilliant’.
On top of the bonfire built by the Lions in
the morning were numerous Guy Fawkes
figures made by local schoolchildren.
Thousands of visitors thronged to the
field alongside the town’s leisure centre and
were treated to the most expensive fireworks
display ever presented in the town,
complemented by music specially chosen to
mark the centenary of the outbreak of the
First World War.
Money raised at the event will support a
range of local causes. The next Lions event is
Cracker Night, the annual pre-Christmas
evening of fairground rides, charity stalls, late
night shopping and street entertainment on
Thursday, December 11th.

Povey’s People
By Radio Stoke’s Owd
Grandad Piggott
Each month Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott (Alan Povey) will write a unique insight
into our local life and its many characters.
His infectious, humorous slant on people provides a different and unusual mix which
hopefully will bring a warm smile to the faces of our readers.
This month: Dresden Good Companions
It was Perce Lockett who told me that Owd
Grandad Piggott had been barred out of
Tummy Dawkins’s pub. Whatever had
caused this must have been pretty serious as
Owd Grandad Piggott was Tummy Dawkins’s
best customer.
Oh, it was serious owrate’, confirmed Perce.
‘’Ey ‘it Owd Arthur Donkin’un knocked ‘im
inter th’one armed bandit un Owd Arthur
jowled ‘is yed on th’front on it an’ ay’s claimin’
damages off Tummy Dawkins so Tummy
Dawkins chucked Owd Piggott ite an’ barred
‘im ite – fer life! Ah tell thee – it was serious.
‘Arm sick on it!’, fumed Owd Grandad
Piggott. ‘It’s owleys mar fowt...Arthur Donkin
inner gooin’ towk ter may lark that!.... Ar
conner goo noweer ar conner withite gerrin’ in
trouble...What’s up with may??’
‘You’re dirty gutst!, I told him bluntly.
‘Ar piggin’ anna!’, he shouted
‘Listen at yer!.You want try usin’ a few
manners and be civil to people’ I told him.
‘You’ve been barred from Longton Darby and
Joan club, barred from Fenton British Legion,
barred out of Hilda Aspinall’s shop for nicking
a packet of firelighters, now you’re barred out
of Tummy Dawkins’s....’
Most of the time, getting barred didn’t
overly bother Owd Grandad Piggott. His
existence revolved around the bookies, visiting
the scrapyard with Club Paper Jack, getting a
pie at lunchtime and bolting it in St John’s
churchyard, then going to sleep on a bench, but
the Tummy Dawkins situation was a
watershed. His main watering hole had now
dispensed with him and a major void had
opened up before him.
‘Ar anna bothered!’, he said dismissively,
‘Tummy Dawkins con stuff ‘is ale...thee’s plenty
mower pubs in Longton!’
It was then he learned about Dresden Good
Companions.
It had been going for a few weeks, started
by a compassionate rector who for three
mornings a week, had decided to donate his
church to the furtherance of goodwill to
mankind, mainly to lonely senior citizens. In
the advertising of Dresden Good Companions,
the kindly rector had added a strapline that said
on the poster ‘for gentlefolk’ People over sixty
five could go there for tea and biscuits, have a
game of bingo, then they would sing a hymn,
have a few more cups of tea and pass the time
of day till about one oclock. That suited Owd
Grandad Piggott absolutely fine.
He could sing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’
with the best of them. He could go to Dresden
Good Companions, get a couple or three pints
down him in The Old Hut afterwards and still
get ‘on’ in the 2.30 at Doncaster. There was just
one snag. Owd Grandad Piggott was not
welcome at Dresden Good Companions. There
was no way that he fell into the category of
‘gentlefolk’. Too many people knew him and
knew of his reputation and one of the patrons
of that establishment was Arthur Donkin so he
stood no chance of being allowed in in his own
right. So he decided to go in disguise. This
particular day, this figure appeared at Dresden
Good Companions with a bandage around its
head with a hole cut in it and a single eye
glaring out, a cap stuck on the top of its head
and wearing a filthy old mac. This one eye
glared out at the curate who looked rather
taken aback and asked ‘Are you alright sir’.
‘No!...Arm bad! Arm dead bad...Ar’ve
gorrer disease an’ ar’ve ony got thray months
ter live....’
‘Oh....oh dear...you had better come in....’
Owd Grandad Piggott needed no second
bidding and made himself at home, quickly
helping himself to a cup of tea and attacking
the chocolate biscuits. He devoured half a
packet, had three more cups of tea, won a two
pound bag of sugar at bingo, then slunk off
when it finished. He got round the corner,
ripped his bandage off, then stumped off in the
general direction of The Old Hut.
Owd Grandad Piggott kept it going for
three weeks but by this time, questions were
starting to be asked as to his identity.
‘Arm sure ar know that bloke!’ muttered
one individual, ‘Ey reminds me o’ somebody...’
By this time, Owd Grandad Piggott’s bandage
was getting a bit raggedy. It had got tea stains
all around it, the hole where his eye glared out
of it was shredded and it was beginning to
stink. It was Arthur Donkin who eventually
sussed it.
‘That’s Owd Piggott that is!’, he said with
conviction. ‘A rate troublemaker if ever thee
was one! Mark mar words..That’s Owd
Piggott f’m Tummy Dawkins’s pub! Ar’ll
expose ‘im next tarm ay comes in, they see if ar
dunner!’ Two days later, Arthur Donkin had
arrived early at Dresden Good Companions
and prepared a reception committee for the
stranger with a bandage round his head and
when the stranger arrived and took his usual
place where he could access the chocolate
biscuits, Arthur and a compatriot sidled behind
him and old Arthur lifted the bucket of water
that he had placed ready while the compatriot
gingerly lifted the cap on top of Owd Grandad
Piggott’s head exposing the hole in the top of
the bandage. He nodded to Arthur who lifted
the bucket and fired the contents into the hole.
The result was instantaneous. There was a
stifled ‘GLOOP’ and a great gout of water
charged out of the eyehole in the bandage and
the rest of it cascaded out of Owd Grandad
Piggott’s neck. Owd Grandad emitted a roar
like a Galloway bull as he tore at the bandage
and emitted a torrent of foam, froth and bad
language. As the bandage was torn off, his hair
stood out in wild spikes and he spluttered and
cursed as he glared around for his assailant.
Spotting Arthur Donkin, he made a wild grab
for him, missed and Arthur took off like a
greyhound followed closely by Owd Grandad
Piggott.
That was the end of Owd Grandad Piggott
and Dresden Good Companions. Tummy
Dawkins eventually relented and allowed Owd
Grandad Piggott back in but Arthur Donkin
had to change his pub.

26. Radio Mary
at The Races
Ahuge crowd poured into Uttoxeter Racecourse for the
Annual Beer Festival raceday with Uttoxeter band
Radio Mary providing superb entertainment after
racing!
Uttoxeter Racecourse Executive Director David
MacDonald was over the moon at the success of the event:
“This was the 5th running of The Marston’s Beer Festival
Raceday and our most successful to date with a crowd of
over 10,000 attending. This race meeting has grown
substantially over the years and the relationship with local
Sponsor Marston’s has helped considerably. Over 2500 of
their pub customers boosted the admissions. It was fitting
that on a day with a real Midlands feel to it we should book
a local band to finish the day’s festivities and Radio Mary
were happy to oblige.
“It was the perfect end to a thrilling day’s racing as
thousands stayed behind to enjoy an hour set of Radio
Mary. I even heard that two customers from Liverpool had
travelled down especially to see the band having first seen
them at Aintree. I was so pleased with their performance
that I have invited them back on Midlands National Day to
play in the John Smith’s Marquee,” added Mr Macdonald.
Radio Mary’s Lead Singer Kev Hand commented: “We
had a great time playing at the Uttoxeter Racecourse beer
festival, the rain stayed away and the crowds flocked in by
the thousands! We’ve played a few racecourses now,
including the Aintree Grand National and the Cheltenham
Gold Cup, so we were really chuffed when David
MacDonald asked us to play in our home town.
“The Band was scheduled to go on stage at 4.15 after
the last race, however as we are all well into the races, we
decided to arrive early to enjoy the day, I was the only
member of the band not to have a winner, still I had a great
time, having a few bevvies and meeting a lot of people I
hadn’t seen for a while including Mr Nigel Titterton of The
Voice colour magazine, who has been a real mate to Radio
Mary over the years.
“By the time we took to the stage we were well up for it!
I would like to thank everyone who
stayed back to watch the
band after the last race , we
all enjoyed an amazing
party atmosphere it felt like
New Year’s Eve.”
Kev added “Speaking of
New Year’s Eve, we will be
bringing in the New Year at
Bradley House Club in
Uttoxeter, so for anyone
interested tickets are now on
sale at the club.”

38. NEW VOICE FEATURE Our Precious Gift Baby Dexter
Is this your first baby?
Yes, Dexter is our 1st baby
What made you decide the time was right to have a baby?
As we got married in 2012 it was the right time for us and with work it just fell into place.
How was your pregnancy mum?
Not the best. I suffered with morning sickness from 6 weeks to 18 weeks. So with 12 weeks
of morning sickness I use to dread going to bed knowing I would be ill in the morning. People
would say morning sickness is a good sign, which made the mornings a little better. I tried all
the usual stuff like having ginger, but what worked for me was sea-band mama morning
sickness wrist bands.
Did you find out the sex of the baby in advance?
No we didn’t. I wanted to find out but my husband wanted a surprise, which I’m glad we did.
We still had people guessing the sex though which was interesting. Everyone was split 50/50.
If you didn’t, did you guess right?
Well, I thought a he would be a girl as girls run in my side of the family, but how wrong was
I? When you are younger you always have a preference of a boy or a girl but when you are
pregnant all you wish for is a healthy baby.

39. Did you have a birthing plan, and were you able to stick to it?
I didn’t have a birthing plan, I just thought go with the flow as things can change so quickly,
and if I was in really bad pain, have some help with pain relief.
What’s the craziest ‘old wives tale’ you’ve been told during your pregnancy?
I was told that if you use a strand of your hair and hang your wedding ring over your pregnant
belly - You are having a girl if the ring swings back and forth and it’s a boy if it swings in a
circle. I did attempt this but Alan walked in saying its a load of rubbish and started laughing
so I didn’t complete it.
Any weird cravings during the pregnancy?
I have heard about loads of weird cravings during pregnancy like eating coal or a sponge, but
I didn’t have anything like that. I only had a sweet tooth, cake was my downfall.
For the dad: Tell us all about your experience as an expectant dad?
I was really excited but also wanted to be there for Amanda and to support her through labour.
I was also really excited to meet our little bundle of joy and to also find out if we have a son
or daughter.
Tell us all about the last year with your baby.
Hard work! When he was born you are that tired with the lack of sleep, feeding and changing
your baby that even doing the dishes would be a bonus. But you look forward to each
milestone like the 1st smile, 1st night sleeping through and him rolling over. Then before you
know it it’s your little ones 1st birthday. But I wouldn’t change the night feeds and nappy
changes, especially when places don’t have changing facilities and you have to change them in
the strangest places. Having a baby brings out the big kid inside of you which is a great feeling
especial when he laughs with you, or at us.
How has having a baby changed your life?
Where do I start as the last year has gone so quickly. Things definitely change, you can’t just
pop out to the shop as you now have to take your baby and changing bag, so a 5 minute
outing now takes 30 minutes. If you thought your life was busy before having a baby, you are
wrong. Having a baby keeps you on your toes - No more lie ins at the weekend and your baby
comes first. Having a baby has definitely changed our life - for the better!
Would you have another baby?
At the moment we are enjoying Dexter and having lovely family days out.
Any advice for expectant parents of couples planning a family? Everyone will give you advice
but just take everything with a pinch of salt. You are getting to know your baby and your
baby is also getting to know you. You are new to this and there is no manual but you will soon
know what is best for your baby.

40. Our Precious Gift Baby Dexter
Finding out we were pregnant
I was a couple of days late with my period and my body is normally like
clockwork so I took a test at the start of January 2013, and there was the line
to say ‘pregnant’ eekk!! I showed Alan and we both smiled. We were both so
happy but was unsure when to tell family members. I was really nervous telling
my mum and twin sister as they didn’t have a clue what big news we were
going to announce, but they were so happy for us. Alan’s parents were also
excited as they kept dropping hints they would like to be grandparents. I told
my best friend Hayley who was due 3 months before me and she has been
great through my pregnancy. If I just had a little question she would give me
an honest answer and listen to me.
His arrival
His due date had arrived 10th September and I had every one texting me if
there was any twinges, but nothing. Days were passing and I didn’t venture far
in case something happened. Soon Sunday 15th September I got bored and
invited my sister and her boyfriend round for Sunday dinner. We cooked a
nice lamb dinner and all ate around the table. As all the plates were cleared I
stood up, then looked down as my waters had broke! As I went upstairs I
realized this was the last day it would be just me and Alan. I went back
downstairs and Alan said we cant go the hospital yet as the apple crumble
was in the oven and its going to be a long night so we better eat up. My sister
Lisa and her boyfriend Shaun were really good as they did the last bits of
washing up and tidy the house. So it was time to make our way to hospital -
I wasn’t having any contractions so didn’t know what would happen next.
At the hospital they were unable to examine me as my waters had gone so I
was sent home and told to come back the next day. As we live 20 minutes
away from North Staffs Hospital we got back home and BANG my
contractions started. I was home for 5 minutes before we left again to go
hospital. As it was early hours of the morning there was no traffic on the road
and loads of parking spaces at the hospital. At this point gas and air was my
best friend. I then had the urge to push and thought oh, this is getting a bit
painful so asked for an epidural, at which point I was pushed into the lift to
go up a floor. As soon as I lay on the bed they said there was no time for an
epidural as our baby was ready to meet us. I thought, how on earth have I
managed that on gas and air. After being in labour for 3hours 23min our son
entered the world. He came straight to me for cuddles and I was in shock how
big he was and that I had actually done it. I must say though that my midwife
Danielle was amazing. She was straight to the point and made me feel calm
and comfortable at the most important time. You don’t really realize how
much trust you put into one person you have only just met to ensure that your
labour goes as smooth as possible. Then as my husband held our son I thought
wow, we are now complete.

41. Have I got news for you
by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter
Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions
Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a
senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at
Staffordshire University.
Happy Christmas – we must be Crackers
Cracker Night in Uttoxeter town centre –
November 11th. It’s a Thursday. There you go.
That’s the public service announcement over. I
know you want to be there.
I’ve said before that Cracker – an evening of
fairground rides, charity stalls, late night shopping
and street entertainment – marks the beginning of
Christmas for many of us in Uttoxeter.
Never mind that the tinsel has been in the shops
since you came back from your summer holiday.
Nor that the competing attractions of a computer-generated
penguin and the shameless exploitation
of the Christmas truce in the Great War have been
on our screens for weeks. Christmas only really
starts with Cracker Night.
Before that happens though, may I ask which
corporate retail giant brought a tear to your eye?
Or were you immune to the charms of big budget
manipulation of your spending power?
The message from one of our leading
supermarkets is that if you buy a retro-styled
chocolate bar you’ll be doing your bit for the
British Legion. That apparently excuses the fact
that the advert encourages your excessive and
unnecessary consumption of groceries from a
supermarket chain so cynical that it will exploit a
sanitised (and beautifully shot) version of the
carnage of war for a commercial.
Happy Christmas, war isn’t over - as John
Lennon might, less hopefully but more truthfully,
have written - it’s just being used to sell groceries.
At least in Uttoxeter we don’t have a
Sainsbury’s, or a John Lewis for that matter. And
Cracker is an opportunity to help local charities as
well as local retail businesses.
Santa Claus is coming to town
The Lions, who run Cracker with support from
the town council, see it as an opportunity for a pre-festive
family night out, with attractions from
Santa’s grotto for the little ones to thrill rides for
teenagers and adventurous adults.
Along the High Street, our stalls and those of
other charity and community groups raise
thousands of pounds for good causes.
But the purely commercial spin-off for shops,
pubs and cafes is important too. The more
businesses that take advantage of the chance to
appeal to the spending power of the thousands of
people thronging the streets the better, as far as
we’re concerned.
The health of the local economy matters to all
of us. The High Street has more than its share of
empty shops, and arguably a disproportionate
number of charity shops.
But in that respect Uttoxeter is far from unique
among market towns. So I’d rather tell you about
what’s on offer on Cracker Night than argue the
Goldies in Uttoxeter
The Golden-Oldies Charity, “Goldies,”as
it is fondly known now hold two ‘Sing
Smile’ sessions in Uttoxeter.
Staffordshire area co-ordinator, Anne Griffiths
said, “We held a taster session in the summer
and it was so well received that we decided to
run sessions on a monthly basis in the Meeting
Room at the Methodist Church in Uttoxeter,
and at the Heath Community Centre in Holly
Road.”
The Golden-Oldies Charity was started in
Bath North East Somerset in January 2008 by
musician Grenville Jones who ran just 4 daytime
singing sessions himself for older people. Now,
six years later, “Goldies,” run over 100 singing
and activity sessions. Amongst those attending
are elderly people who are socially isolated as
well as people
with learning
difficulties and
dementia.
At the heart
of each
Goldies
activity and
singing session
are the popular
hits of the 50s,
60s and 70s
with songs
from, the
charity’s
Patron Sir Cliff
Richard, Elvis,
Dusty
Springfield,
Petula Clark
and Tom
Jones! The
songs are
carefully
chosen and
based on well-known
sing-along hits.
They
encourage
people to clap in rhythm to the music, tap their
feet, smile and even get up and dance! The ethos
of the Golden-Oldies Charity is quite simple, it is
to give opportunities for those who are isolated
to get out and enjoy social time with others.
Anne, who is a member of Uttoxeter’s Heath
Chorus, continued, “Goldies day time fun, sing
and stretch sessions are for everyone. We are
merits of rates-exempt second-hand shops,
regardless of the worthy causes they support.
We have jugglers, magicians, street theatre,
Punch and Judy, fire-eating, and musicians a-plenty.
They include award-winning performers
from hundreds of miles away and home-grown
talent. There’ll be a disco with party games in the
High Street and live bands – traditional and
modern – elsewhere.
And of course, Santa in his grotto, in the Town
Hall.
Tis the season to be jolly
We can’t promise good weather, but we can
promise a good time for all ages. Cracker Night is
the cue to leave all the stress of organising a family
Christmas behind you for a few hours and soak up
the festive atmosphere.
Jollity is not compulsory, but it’s a good idea if
you want to enter the spirit of the evening. It’s not
all about commercialism and you can spend as
much or as little as you like.
I’ll be on one of the Lions’ stalls, I expect. If you
can recognise me from the dodgy photo at the top
of this column, come and say hello. I may try to
take your money off you (for the various charities
of course), but I won’t do it with one eye on your
wallet and the other on the Cenotaph.
And I promise not to have a penguin trailing
round with me.
certainly NOT a choir, but give people who may
not have many chances to get out the
opportunity to do so and have a sing-along. All
we ask is that everyone who attends makes a
minimum £1 donation to our charity. December
sessions will be party time for the Goldies, so we
will also be singing Christmas songs and
generally getting into the festive mood. Drop in
and you’ll be assured of a friendly welcome, good
company and a cup of tea to finish!”

45. Golden Wedding
Malcolm and Elaine Sales celebrated their
Golden Wedding Anniversary on Friday
31st October.
They met 55 years ago at Kingsley Youth Club
and were married 5 years later at St. Werburgh’s
Church, Kingsley. The couple moved into their
newly built bungalow in Barnfields Lane, Kingsley
in April 1965 where they have lived ever since.
Together they had two children, Nicholas and
Amanda and two grandchildren, Christopher and
Hannah.
Malcolm is a Surveyor based in Cheadle and
Elaine is organist at St. Werburgh’s.
They held a celebration party for over 70
relatives and friends in the evening at St.
Werburgh’s School. Those present who had also
been at the wedding in 1964 included Elaine’s
cousin, Mrs Janet Thursfield and Malcolm’s
brother and sister-in-law Mr. Mrs. Roy Sales.
Speeches were made by eldest child Nicholas
(who praised Malcolm Elaine for doing a great
job as parents), Elaine’s brother Barry, (who was
also present at the wedding as a very young page
boy; his speech included reflections on how the
world had changed in the 50 years since the
wedding, holidays the family have enjoyed both at
home and abroad and how much love and support
Malcolm Elaine had given him and his wife Julie
and family over the years and vice-versa) and by
Malcolm himself, in which he outlined how
grateful he was for a wonderful marriage.
Guests enjoyed a pie and pea supper, and were
treated to a short concert of popular numbers from
opera, musical theatre and operetta from Nicholas
and his partner Sarah Helsby Hughes, both
professional opera singers, and also from Hannah,
Nicholas’s daughter, who is currently studying at
Keele University. Music was very kindly supplied

46. Fashion Voice
by Angela Clinton of Uttoxeter
The new fashionable look is ‘anything goes’.
There is no one defining look anymore,so it
is all about how to define your own
individual fashion identity. Think about the
image, find your style, work with it, and you will
find it very rewarding. This new thought pattern
can seem more difficult at first. When you feel
confident, relaxed and comfortable in what you
have put together, each choice will become easier.
Fashion can be quite fickle sometimes, but it is
about self expression - and that applies to any
age. True style endures, and you don’t have to
have a vast wardrobe to achieve this.
The likes of Audrey Hepburn’s regal style and
beauty are synonymous with 20th century
glamour, and
Hubert de
Givenchy designed
the actress’s
personal ensemble.
She later said “He
is far more than a
couturier, he is a
creator of
personality.”

the hood. If there are any Mods out there you
will love the latter. For Christmas and the party
season,we need to look through our wardrobes
for those gorgeous, glittery, ‘Glad Rags’ - ready
for party time.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to
all my readers and thank you for the positive

47. Karen’s Cake Corner
by Karen Hill
Banana Cake with Dark
Chocolate Chips and
Butterscotch Sauce
Every Sunday, my family get
together and we have a big roast
dinner. This is always a day for
baking cakes! My daughter, Daisy,
also loves baking cakes and often
helps out. I thought I must mention
the latest cake that Daisy made,
lovely moist Banana Cake with Dark
Chocolate chips, served with
Butterscotch Sauce. We also added a
large scoop of vanilla ice cream. It
was truly delicious! Well done Daisy.
You will need:
250g plain flour
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp baking powder
250g golden caster sugar
150ml sunflower oil
250g ripe mashed bananas
2 large free range eggs
50ml natural yoghurt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Dark chocolate drops
Butterscotch Sauce
100g unsalted butter
250g golden syrup
100g soft brown sugar
200ml double cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
¼ tsp salt
First preheat the oven to 180°C.
Grease and line your loaf tin. Next,
sift together the flour, bicarbonate of
soda and baking powder then mix
with the sugar. In a separate bowl,
blend together the sugar, oil, bananas
along with the beaten eggs, yoghurt
and vanilla extract.
Combine all the ingredients
together along with as many dark
chocolate chips as desired. Pour the
batter into the prepared tin and cook
in the centre of the oven for
approximately 45-55 minutes or
until a skewer inserted into the cake
comes out clean. Allow to cool in the
tin for 10 minutes and then turn out
onto a wire rack.
To make the Butterscotch Sauce,
place all the ingredients into a
saucepan and bring to the boil,
stirring for a few minutes, then
remove from the heat. This delicious
sauce keeps very well in the fridge in
an airtight container.
All that is left to do is cut a large
slice and drizzle the butterscotch
sauce generously on top. Delicious!!

48. Let The Voice Be With You
by Les Humphries of Rocester
Cyclists have been in the news a lot lately, with
criticism being levelled at drivers of motor
vehicles for not taking enough care.
Everywhere we go we see signs saying ‘Think Bike’
yet cyclists these days seldom ‘Think Car!’ They
often hunt in packs with never a thought for other
road users as they chat away - forcing motorists to
drive at a snails pace behind them. Few of them
these days have decent lights on their cycles., apart
from little flashing things that you can’t see until
you are on top of them. Cycle paths continue to be
a joke as cyclists would rather block the roads, both
these things I feel should be a fining offences, and
protective headgear should be obligatory. Come on
cyclists take a bit of responsibility on yourselves and
the rest of us will have a lot more respect for you.
I am right behind our Editor Nigel in his quest to
get the Mount Pleasant land opposite Oldfields
Sports and Social Club in Uttoxeter, put to use for
young people as extra land for sporting activities
(see last issue). This has long been an objective for
different generations of sports people using
Oldfields over the years, but as always the County
Council will not bend, using all kinds of pathetic
arguments as to why they will not allow the land
to be used.
Although I am myself unable to be actively
involved at present, I have been proud to have been
involved with Oldfields since the Rugby Club
formed in 1982. We requested to obtain the land at
that time, but were told it was earmarked to be used
for a hospital - 32 years later “Where is the
hospital?” Meanwhile the land lies as fallow
scrubland where occasionally cows graze. I am both
sorry and surprised that Phillip Atkins has not
replied to Nigels communication on the matter, but
stick with it mate, if anyone can get them to budge
you can!
Uttoxeter Rugby Club who play on Oldfields are
going through a tough time at present, but we’ve
had these seasons before with injuries not helping
the cause. But these days work commitments on
Saturdays more than ever before, prevent young
people from getting involved in Saturday sport, and
small clubs like ours are bound to struggle with no
strength in depth. But I am sure things will improve
as injured players get back to fitness. They are a
young side with plenty of guts, but not enough guile
yet.
November was a busy month for the Churnet
Valley Male Voice Choir with three performances
during Remembrance Week, at Lask Edge on
Remembrance Sunday, Kidsgrove on the following
Thursday, with the Caulden Lowe Pie and Pea
supper on the Saturday then supporting Rocesters
Christmas Tree Sing Along on the 29th, when the
Christmas Lights were switched on, which was good
fun.
One of our choirsters Mickey Walker was also a
main organiser of the Wartime Sing Along at Alton
Church, where £200 was raised for the Royal
British Legion on a foul night in driving wind and
rain. Despite this it was well supported by local
residents who joined in with a nice blend of song
and poetry.
The public were once again generous with their
donations to the Royal British Legion Poppy
Appeal. I am sure you all saw the wonderful poppy
display at the Tower of London, if not in actuality
you must have seen them on Television, they gave
us a poignant reminder of the occasion. The night
before the Services took place, the Uttoxeter branch
once again put on their excellent Remembrance
Concert in St. Mary’s Church, where Standards
were dipped both at the beginning and end, with
Army Cadets setting up the Drumhead for the
dedication with poppies scattered from above
during the silence.
Once again the Uttoxeter Town Brass Band gave
a rousing performance with a rather more
restrained poignant programme of music from
ladies of the Heath Chorus who seem to grow in
numbers every year. It seems that ladies choirs are
getting more popular, whilst male voice choirs are
waning.

Talking Pets
by Shoshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS
Shosh qualified from the Royal Veterinary
College in London, and has been working as a
small animal vet at Blue House Veterinary Centre
in Biddulph since 2009. She has a rescue cat
named Bagpuss.
Six festive delights to keep away from
your pet this Christmas
1. Chocolate
At high doses, chocolate can be fatal to dogs
and cats - especially dark chocolate with a high
cocoa content. Cardiac arrhythmias and seizures
are common symptoms of toxicity, so speak to
your vet no matter how much chocolate your dog
has consumed. The dose they have ingested can be
calculated to see if it is likely to cause problems,
and appropriate measures taken.
Don’t leave chocolate gifts within reach while
they are awaiting wrapping, and don’t place them
under the tree until Christmas morning when you
can supervise your dog. Also take care with
chocolate tree decorations.
2. Mince pies, Christmas cake and Christmas
pudding
Dried fruits such as currants, raisins and
sultanas are all toxic to dogs. Any quantity,
however small, has the potential to cause fatal
kidney failure, so make sure all such treats are kept
well out of reach. Also watch out for fruit and nut
mixes and fruit scones. Always call your vet if you
think your dog has snaffled any of these.
3. Christmas dinner
Nobody wants their pet to feel left out when
the family is tucking into Christmas dinner, but
please remember: large quantities of fatty food can
lead to pancreatitis (painful and often serious
inflammation of the pancreas); stuffing can contain
onions, which are toxic to dogs and cats; cooked
bones are not easy to digest and can become stuck,
causing intestinal obstructions requiring emergency
surgery.
If you wish to give your pet Christmas dinner,
stick to bone-free turkey meat with a few
vegetables such as carrots or peas – and go easy on
the gravy as this can be very fatty.
Remember to take care with leftovers as well -
hungry pets can dismantle bin bags and jump onto
worktops!
4. Nuts
Who doesn’t love a bowl of nuts in front of a
Christmas movie? If you’re a nut fan, keep your
dog in mind. Macadamias are tasty, but are
poisonous to dogs. Other nuts don’t tend to cause
problems, but shells can cause intestinal blockages
- so keep them out of reach.
5. Lilies
Lilies are beautiful, but all parts of the plant –
stem, flowers, pollen and leaves – are highly toxic
to cats if consumed, causing severe kidney failure.
Some cats tend to chew on plants, but even those
who brush against the flowers by accident then
groom the pollen from their coat are at risk.
If you have cats it is safest not to have lilies on
display in your house, just in case. Stick to cat-safe
flowers – roses, Gerbera, sunflowers and asters are
some non-toxic choices – and research your choice
first if you are not sure.
NB: Poinsiettas are mildly toxic to cats and
dogs – they can cause tummy upsets and drooling,
but are not dangerous. Call your vet if you are
worried.
6. Christmas decorations
Unfortunately, cats and dogs alike can enjoy
chewing on decorations. Tinsel is a big worry, as it
can end up getting stuck throughout the entire
digestive tract – very major surgery to remove and
the potential for a lot of damage! Always be aware
of what decorations you have out and what your
pet is doing – never leave dogs and cats
unsupervised around decorations if you know they
have a tendency to chew.
We also see cases of electrocution when dogs
and cats have been chewing on the cords for
Christmas lights and illuminated decorations. Be
vigilant and make sure you secure cords and wires
out of reach as far as possible.
This is an updated version of an article
published in the Uttoxeter Cheadle Voice last
Christmas. The holiday season can be fun for pets,
but be mindful of their health and safety. Make
sure you know what your vet’s Christmas opening
hours are, and never be afraid to give them a call if
you have any concerns - they will always have an
emergency vet on duty.
Happy holidays everyone!
