make great strides in understanding

How do we Design good EcoTechnologies? Part 2a
*
Technology is the application of science, so a good basic knowledge of
science is essential if we are to design technologies of any kind.
*
And everything that transforms energy or matter from one form to another is a
technology, so science and technology really are basic for life, and certainly
for designers.
*
In this second part of exploring technology as the application of science, we
delve into the basic science of space elevators, of pathogens & of basic
mechanics & vectors in order to become better designers of water systems,
compost toilets & any built structures, large or small - with lots of examples.

It has been 'proved' that
kangoroos can't jump,
bees can't fly & that
birds can't get enough
energy from their food
to power their search
for food in the first
place.
It has even been 'proved' that life is impossible because
living systems become more & more ordered, whereas
physics implies that all systems become more & more
disordered.

But the physics
we're interested in,

5. Space Elevators & Kangaroos
A space elevator is something
outrageously difficult, complex &
expensive to create ...
... that will however make space travel
very cheap, once it has been built
There's nothing permacultural,
probably, about the project in itself
(for the same kinds of reasons eloquently
exposed here by other sci-fi fans >>)
We need 'space elevator
science'
to understand how
kangaroos work
Space elevators are to rockets

VERY permacultural

1) developing storages of high-quality energy,
2) feeding back work from storages to increase inflows,
3) recycling materials as needed,

5) setting up exchanges for needed materials,

Editor's Notes
Module 4. Despite the fact that many 'Technological Improvements' haven't managed to improve the quality of life for the majority of people, but have brought more problems & pollution, we still keep expecting the arrival of a more modern technology, perhaps more ecological, that will restore & reverse the damage made.
In fact, it is possible, but not without having more citizens with a better understanding & a wider vision of what technology is, & who also understand some basic science necessary in order to be able to think for ourselves on these subjects.
M4.10 -In this second part of exploring technology as the application of science, we delve into the basic science of fluids, of pathogens & of basic mechanics & vectors in order to become better designers of water systems, compost toilets & any built structures, large or small - with examples.

Schumacher was one of the first economists to question the appropriateness of using gross national product to measure human well being
China also implemented policies similar to appropriate technology during the reign of Mao Zedong and the following Cultural Revolution. During the Cultural Revolution, development policies based on the idea of "walking on two legs" advocated the development of both large-scale factories and small-scale village industries.

farmers of 40 centuries .... shit is always someones' food
The urine your own household produces is safe to use without treatment. To collect urine in your house all you need is a two-to-five gallon jug or bucket. It must be fitted with a tight cover to prevent oxygen from turning the urine's nitrogen into ammonia, which smells bad and causes some nitrogen loss.
Though urine is usually sterile, it can become contaminated if it comes into contact with feces. There are also a few diseases that can be transmitted through urine: leptospirosis and schistosomiasis (bilharzia), which are found almost exclusively in tropical aquatic environments; and typhoid, which is inactivated shortly after excretion. If urine has been contaminated with feces, or if it came from strangers who may carry these diseases, urine should be purified before it is used.
Urine is easy to purify -- all you have to do is wait. Urine leaves the body fairly acidic and then the pH increases rapidly until pathogens are unable to survive. This process takes from fifteen days in warmer Mexico to over three months in the chilly Scandinavian winter.

Energetics (also called energy economics) is the study of energy under transformation. Because energy flows at all scales, from the quantum level to the biosphere and cosmos, energetics is a very broad discipline, encompassing for example thermodynamics, chemistry, biological energetics, biochemistry and ecological energetics. Where each branch of energetics begins and ends is a topic of constant debate. For example, Lehninger (1973, p. 21) contended that when the science of thermodynamics deals with energy exchanges of all types, it can be called energetics.

As Janine Benyus puts it, Life always produces the conditions conducive to Life. There is no central control unit in the system, that orchestrates every part’s behaviour; by being fully themselves, fully alert and fully responsive to changes in their environment, the system’s components become interconnected to actually form that system, in an emergent process
