7. The Sisterhood Charity Information
The Babes In Arms Appeal is dedicated to funding research and humanitarian aid for the protection of
mothers and enfants around the world including research into Cot Death, miscariages, HIV transmission
as well as rape counselling in Eastern Congo.
It is an appeal within 2 charities NPIMR for its medical research work and IMET2000 for its international
aid work. By combining research and aid Babes in Arms is in a strong position to help women all over
the world. The main fundraising events are coordinated by the Sisterhood including record breaking
sporting challenges and high profile social events.
Originally set up in 1991 by Grace Tye to fund research into cot death Babes in Arms has now
expanded to include international aid projects in Palestine, Senegal before teaming up in 2008 with
Leah Chisughi to protect the women and children of Eastern Congo.
In 2008 Médecins Sans Frontières estimated that 75% of all the rape cases it dealt with worldwide were
in eastern Congo. Many are left HIV positive and pregnant. Congolese human rights groups estimate
seven out of 10 women have been raped. Human rights groups say that while rape is a product of many
conflicts, its systematic nature in Congo makes it a “weapon of war” used to terrorise and punish
communities or as a tool of ethnic cleansing.
Doctors say the onslaught against women is notable not only for its scale but for its brutality. Gang rapes
are commonplace and frequently accompanied by torture in which women are mutilated by having guns
or stakes thrust into their vaginas, or their genitals slashed with knives. One in four who make it to
hospitals in Goma and Rutshuru require major surgery. More than a third are teenagers.
Babes in Arms believes the violation of women and children is unacceptable

12. An irresistible media story…
Ordinary Girls Achieving Extraordinary Things
There are four key elements that make this an irresistible
story for the media and therefore strong brand exposure for
Project Partners:
• They attempt to compete in the extreme sports arena where
men normally dominate
• The Sisterhood often race The Sisterwood - Beauty Vs
Brawn! A classic battle of the sexes story line.
• The Sisterhood are all incredibly attractive: this photogenic and
telegenic group of women get attention wherever they go.
• Media history to build on: The Sisterhood gained global awareness in
2007/08 and became an inspirational phenomenon with girls clamouring to join. A
number of the girls already have careers in the media and are constantly being asked
‘what next?’.
13. Sisters already in the media
Within the team are a number of women with an established media profile who we
will be utilising to further our media coverage and raise awareness, including:
Elizabeth McClarnon is one third of Britains biggest girl band Atomic
Kitten and has travelled the world on sell out tours, has countless awards
and number 1 singles and albums under her belt and sold 10 million
records globally. Since her early Atomic Kitten days, Liz has effortlessly
made the leap from starlet to superstar, been schmoozed by Hollywood
hotshots and partied with pop royalty. Since then Liz has been busy in the
studio writing great song after great song. Her debut album was released
in 2009. In July 2008 Liz swapped her microphone for an apron, as she
took part in the new BBC 1 prime time, series of Celebrity Masterchef
where she triumphed in being crowned Celebrity Masterchef winner.
