1. Thank you Sabrina
Today I will be talking about appalacian rituals, traditions and
what it's like to be a appalacian patient
Appalation people have deep roots in their rituals and traditions
Their roots are as old as the Irish, Scottish and English who settled
in the applician mountain range the early1800s
appallation people follow primarily the Protestant church
Some common Protestant churches are Presbyterian, Lutheran and
Baptist churches
They celebrate the same holidays as you and I thanksgiving,
Christmas, new years, Easter and Fourth of July
It is not uncommon for their children to be educated at home
probably because they live in rural areas with limited access to
public schools
Moonshining has been an appalacian tradition for decades
Moonshining has been a source of income and is still illegal today
moonshine is sometimes called White lightning, Mountain Dew
Or hooch
The hooch is sometimes so strong that it can cause blindness
Applicians typically live off the land and are very resourceful
Living off the land carrys some traditions of its own
2. Some of these traditions include hunting, fishing and substanance
farming
The fishing pole and gun are important tools for survival
They use Hunting and fishing as their primary source of protein
And substanance farming as their source of vegetables
Appalation people even have their own style of music called
bluegrass
bluegrass is and will always be a big part of appalacian culture
Bluegrass arrived in applicia in the 18th century when the Irish,
Scotish and english immigrants brought instruments like the
fiddle, mandolin and most importantly the five string banjo
oversees
Bluegrass music can still be found today and is more commonly
known as jam band music or twang
Hillbillies definitely known to have fun sometimes too much fun
and eventually end up in our emergency rooms and hospitals
An appalation patient usually has to travel long distances to get to
the hospital because they live in rural mountain areas.
patients follow primarily the clinical model of care and tend to
avoid the hospital
they typically come to the hospital only when absolutely necessary
and when it becomes life threatening
a typical patient usually denies all preventative healthcare.
3. They deny health care such as flu shots and vaccinations
you can expect an Appalacian patient to be very cautious when
dealing with healthcare
This may be because of the high cost of healthcare today or just
plane stubbornness
The biggest issue is that most appalation people live in poverty
and not have access to private healthcare
Next you will hear from Maricela who's going to tell you a little
about the nurses role in the Appalachian American communities.
