2. Express Entry Programs
Express Entry is the fastest and most popular route to permanent residence
for immigrants seeking a new life in Canada. Canada welcomes
approximately 110,000 skilled workers each year through the Express Entry
system.
Express Entry is the online system used by the Government of Canada to
organize and process applications from skilled workers who wish to
immigrate to Canada and seek Canadian permanent resident status. The
system administers three main federal economic programs:
• Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
• Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
• Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
3. • If you qualify for any of the above
programs, you can also apply for the
Provincial Nominee Program through
Express Entry.
• Express Entry is very simple and contains
two major stages. In the first major stage,
candidates who are eligible for Express
Entry indicate to the Canadian
government their expression of interest in
obtaining Canadian permanent resident
status. In the second major stage, the
Canadian government invites the highest-
scoring candidates to immigrate to
Canada.
4. How does Express Entry work?
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to submit your Express Entry
profile and obtain a permanent resident visa to immigrate to Canada:
• Step 1: Find out if you qualify for Express Entry.
• Step 2: Take a language test and get an Educational Credential
Assessment (ECA).
• Step 3 – Submit your personal information to the Immigration,
Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
• Step 4 – Wait to see if you have received an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
for permanent residence from IRCC.
5. • Step 5 – Submit your completed Application for Permanent Residence
(APR) to IRCC and pay the fee by the specified deadline. During this
step, you must attach your medical and criminal record certificates.
IRCC will then send you a return receipt (AOR).
• Step 6 – Submit your biometrics immediately when requested by
IRCC.
• Step 7: Wait for IRCC to make a final decision on your APR. IRCC aims
to complete applications in 6 months or less. Once your application is
approved, you will be issued a Certificate of Permanent Residence
(COPR) and a permanent resident visa (if you are from a visa-requiring
country) to travel to Canada and complete your landing.
6. Express Entry Process Time
• Express Entry profiles are valid for up to one year. Candidates who
receive an ITA can expect the Government of Canada to process their
application for permanent residence within six months. The
government begins counting processing times after it receives a
completed permanent residence application. Processing time ends
with a final decision on the application. If candidates do not receive
an ITA within one year of creating their Express Entry profile, they can
simply resubmit their profile if they are still eligible.
7. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) tool
• Express Entry uses a points-based system, the Comprehensive
Ranking System (CRS), to rank candidates’ profiles. The top-scoring
candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and can then apply for
permanent residency.
• After the candidate applies, an IRCC officer reviews the application
and decides if they are approved. Once this is complete, if approved,
the candidate is now a permanent resident of Canada and one step
closer to becoming a Canadian citizen.
8. This tool will help you calculate your Comprehensive Ranking System
(CRS) score based on the answers you provide below. CRS is a points-
based system that we use to rank and qualify your profile and place you
in the Express Entry pool. It’s used to assess your:
• Skills
• Education
• Language ability
• Work experience
• Other factors
9. Express Entry immigrants find good jobs in
Canada
• Yes. A 2020 study by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
(IRCC) found that Express Entry immigrants are highly successful in
the Canadian job market because they exhibit human capital
characteristics that Canadian employers look for. The study found that
Express Entry immigrants earn higher wages than the average
Canadian worker and have high employment and low unemployment
rates. Express Entry immigrants are expected to continue to
outperform in the Canadian job market, as their skills remain in high
demand by Canadian employers as more workers retire over the next
decade. Canada relies on immigration to meet the economic and
fiscal challenges of a rapidly aging population and low birth rate.
10. Can my family come with me under Express
Entry?
Yes. In Express Entry, you can include your wife, husband, or partner.
Also, you can include your dependent children, your spouse's or
common-law partner's dependent children, and your dependent
children's dependent children. If expedited entry is successful, family
members traveling with you will also be granted permanent residency.
• Dependent children are defined as:
• under the age of 22 and not a spouse or common-law partner, or
• Be at least 22 years of age, were financially dependent on a parent
before age 22, and are unable to support themselves financially due
to a physical or mental illness.
