Jane austen
 Jane Austen was an English novelist known
primarily for her novels, which interpret,
critique and comment upon the British landed
gentry at the end of 18th century
Austen’s plots often explore the dependence of
women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable
social standing and economic security.
Famous for Pride and Prejudice , Persuasion,
Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma,
Northanger Abbey.

 Jane Austen was born on December 1775
 At the age of 8 Jane was sent to school with her sister and
after coming back home the two of them spent their time
in reading books, they even owned their library
 Thanks to those readings Jane started writing her own
novels, observing the surrounding environment with her
family
 She started as an anonymous writer

 It was the first novel written by Jane Austen and it
was published anonymously;
 By a Lady appears on the title page where the
author’s name might have been
 It tells the story of the Dashwood sisters,Elinor
and Marianne as they come of age.
 The novel which sold out its first print run of 720
copies in the middle of 1813 marked a success for
its author

NORTHANGER ABBEY

 Northanger Abbey was completed in 1803,the first of
Austen’s novels completed in full, but was published
posthumously in 1817 with persuasion
 The story concerns Catherine Morland, the naïve young
protagonist, and her journey to a better understanding of
herself and of the world around her
 How Catherine views the world has been distorted by her
fondness for Gothic novels and an active imagination

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
 Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 novel of manners by
Jane Austen
 The novel follows the character development of
Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book
who learns about the repercussions of the hasty
judgement and comes to appreciate the difference
between superficial goodness and goodness
 Pride and prejudice has consistenly appeared near the
top of lists of “most-loved books” among literary
scholars

PERSUASION
 Persuasion is the last novel completed by Jane Austen
 The story concerns Anne Elliot, an Englishwoman of 27
years, whose family moves to lower their expenses and
debt by renting their home to an admiral and his wife
 The novel was well-received in the early 19th century,but its
greater fame came later in the century and continued into the
20th and 21st centuries
 Annie Elliot is noteworthy among Austen’s heroines for her
relative maturity
 As Persuasion was Austen’s last completed work, it is accepted as
her mostly maturely written novel,showing a refinement of
literary conception indicative of women in 40 years of age

 Austen’s writing stands out for its comedy, self-awareness and
realistic, detailed portrayals of characters and their relationships
 Austen was really ahead of her time, she set the stage for the
movement of literary realism, which took off the mid-19th century
 Her current renown can be traced to the 1940’s when the literary
scholars began analyzing her work more closely and feminist
critics, in particular, brought her achievements to light
