It is very important for every company to be aware of the changes taking place in the world and do something about it. Technology is constantly changing, and so are humans; therefore, in order to appeal to new and coming customers, your company needs to take steps to expand their website to devices that these new customers are interested in.
Integrating a mobile/tablet version of your website into your business will allow you to be seen as up-to-date. You will understand your customers better, you will know why tablets are perceived as luxury items, and you will increase your sales as you will be one of the few companies that has a special mobile version. The number of tablet users is growing, and will continue to on to have a total of 17.1% increase in 2015 worldwide… that’s 1 billion people. That’s a lot of customers.
Let’s understand your consumers better. When a laptop user visits your site, and she is looking for a wedding caterer, it’s likely she will be doing something else at the same time (surfing the net, chatting with friends), because a laptop allows for all that. Laptop users generally multi-task, and they only use their computers a couple hours a day. Their computer helps them get quick work done, but they are also exposed to a variety of your competitors’ sites. When she picks up her mobile/tablet, it’s likely she’s out running an errand or trying on her wedding dress. She is constantly on these devices because they are perceived as a luxury item and she uses them for personal use. She is more likely to access your full website on her laptop, if she sees your sleek and up-to-date mobile/tablet version, as your competition may not have a mobile-friendly version and she could disregard them completely.
Desktop sites are for bigger screens which automatically means that you would have to place more content on it to fill it up. This can be confusing for consumers sometimes, especially if you have a lot of information to provide. With the mobile version, there would simply be a list of categories and consumers can easily jump in and find what they’re looking for. Navigation for a mobile will be vertical instead of horizontal which is appropriate for their devices; and last but not least, companies can create a new style and design for their mobile sites which is a great way to draw customers in.
We’ve all seen the “re-direct to mobile friendly version” sign when we’re on our phones. What this piece of integration allows you to do, is switch from viewing the current website in its desktop form to its mobile version, therefore making it more comfortable for a user to use on their device. How does the device know when to display this link? Thanks to device recognition technology like User Agent detection, a server decides what content to serve when as it automatically detects the device that a user is on. Lastly, Google’s “Admob Acquisition” allows you to make an informed decision about your mobile-friendly site because it provides you with all the mobile stats of what customers are interested in.
Phone applications are an easy way for companies to make sure consumers are thinking about them at all times. When a customer downloads an app, she will either download it for an Android or iOS device in most cases; as a company you will create both versions. The app allows for quicker access, and shows your brand is tech-savvy and you care about your consumers enough to create an application that makes it easier for them. Furthermore, apps can be easily updated and notifications can be sent to consumers that they should update- a process that takes a few minutes.
These are 2 bad examples of mobile sites. The one on the left, Hardees, has too less content and their design is boring and uninspiring. The one on the right, Jeep, has the opposite problem. Their design is great, but they have too much content which doesn’t fit on the page and gets cut off on the right. You cannot squeeze a web page into a mobile friendly version. The mobile version has to be created completely new and designed in a whole different manner.
These two are great examples of mobile-friendly sites, and both companies make it work for their products. Ambercrombie and Fitch on the left allows for a consumer to easily shop and browse items for sale, while Caribou’s Coffee on the right does a good job in presenting a menu to its consumers. Words are not cut off, pictures are a good size and all navigation is correct – not to mention the design is beautiful.
Collin’s Catering should definitely create a mobile/tablet version for their site, as it allows them to understand consumers better and what they require. Consumers automatically feel at ease, and that you are up to date because they are still surprised when companies have mobile-friendly versions. It’s great for on-the-go consumers, they can look for and verify information when they are running other errands. Adding a mobile version allows you to gain access to a huge group of consumers that you could never access before. This can increase Collin’s Catering sales tremendously.
Collin’s Catering can take full advantage of the mobile version, as the company is very well suited for a transition like this one, since the customers they target are very conscious about time: brides, businessmen, etc. Collin’s catering can provide images that are the right size for mobile phones, they have to make sure the design is right so they can display their menus correctly, they can create a calendar for bookings that should be interactive for mobile devices, as well as an application that allows customers to make reservations.
In conclusion, mobile/tablets are still up and coming, and all companies should really take a look at what this integration and transition can do for their brand and how consumers feel about them. It’s what consumers want, it’s what they are looking for – and as a company it is your job to give them just that.
