Nicholas Parr describes his process for crushing malachite stone to use in inlays. He purchases a piece of malachite for $5 and uses a large pipe nipple and hammer to break it into smaller pieces. Smaller pieces are placed in another nipple and crushed further with a hammer. The crushed stone is sifted into two size fractions, with the larger used first in the carved space, followed by finer material. Smaller pieces are broken further with a tack hammer as needed. Parr acknowledges his may not be the best crushing method but it works for him, and he welcomes suggestions for improvement from students.
