Hunton & Williams LLP. Interview
4
Location: 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20037
Date: May 4, 2015
Interviewee Name: Janice Byrum-Jackson
Interview Summary:
During the time at Hunton-Williams, the students were able to examine the conference rooms, lobby, copy rooms,
and break room, all located on the “Conference Level.” Located on the second level, known as the “Working Level,”
were the offices.
Conference rooms had a storage system (shown in photo) along with a wet bar system that was loaded with
refreshments and office supplies.
Mrs. Jackson explained that because space is scarce in Washington D.C., it is important to utilize the space as much
as possible. This means recycling furniture, and budgeting precisely (even with a near million-dollar budget.)
Although technology is becoming a popular method of storage, space is set aside for the mountainous amounts of
paperwork involved in the law firm.
Problem & Concept Statement
Problem Statement
Our goal is to provide a cohesive shared space with existing tenants. This space requires sufficient areas
for private and public functions. This space must implement a design for today and tomorrow with
sustainability in mind. This design will be equipped to accommodate future expansions.
Concept Statement
Our intention is to design a law firm featuring the fusion of modern elements and Brazilian traditions.
The design will position common gathering spaces to promote dual functionality for clients and
representatives. Utilizing the abundance of natural light, a bright and fresh setting will facilitate clear
circulation. The use of color as a focal point throughout the space will uphold Brazilian traditions.

 Average Rentable office space in Washington DC: $48.96 (2010)
 Net space: the total amount of occupiable space within a building
 Gross space: the total floor area of a space including external walls
 Rentable space: the usable square footage of a space plus a portion of the building’s shared space
 The cost of office rental space in Washington DC can range from $38.00 a square foot to up to $85.00 a square foot. The
location of the office space greatly affected the cost of the space, especially in areas near national monuments, public
squares, and/or water front properties. This is true in the Georgetown location, where rentable office space can be $85.00
due to the fact that it is in close proximity to the “Ritz Carlton hotel, Georgetown University, the Swedish Embassy, and
the Washington Harbor Retail Complex (loopnet.com).”
