NEW ENGLAND PREMIERE
2. “If I look at Gloucester Blue as though someone else wrote it,
I would describe it as a very dark, very funny play about small-
town class distinctions. In Gloucester-speak, it’s The Fort
versus Eastern Point,” Horovitz says. “In theatre-speak, I think
Gloucester Blue is a really fun evening of theatre.”
“One thing I so appreciate about Israel’s work is his intense
desire to keep exploring new avenues of style, content, and
conflict—all of the essential pieces of good playwriting,” cast
member Robert Walsh says. “For as comfortable as he is with
dark comedy, Gloucester Blue represents an even newer
pursuit of the tools and nuances of that genre’s storytelling
components.”
Walsh plays the role of Latham, the new guy on the job. He
joins an impressive cast that includes Francisco Solorzano,
Co-Founder and Producing Artistic Director of NYC’s Barefoot
Theatre Company, as Stumpy and Lewis D. Wheeler as Bummy.
Gloucester Blue is full of twists, turns, and surprises you’ll
never expect or forget.
“Gloucester Blue has already found audiences in developmental
productions in Seattle, Delray Beach in Florida, and New York
City,” Horovitz says. “I’m delighted to finally bring this play
home to Gloucester.” Gloucester Blue opens September 17 and
runs through October 3. }Gs
Hang onto your dropcloths. Gloucester Blue is coming
to Gloucester Stage in a New England premiere
directed by its creator, Israel Horovitz.
Many of the characters in Horovitz’s Gloucester-based plays
come from the area’s fishing industry. This time Horovitz
puts the spotlight on housepainters, intrigue, murder, money,
and sex… and it’s funny.
And if these walls could talk… your remodeling projects
have never witnessed what happens in Gloucester Blue.
Blue may be the color on the walls, but blood red and
blackmail emerge as the dominant palette in this dark
comedy.
The story takes place in the attic loft of an old industrial build-
ing owned by upscale Bradford Ellis IV, otherwise known as
Bummy, and his wife, Lexi. Working-class housepainter Stumpy
has been contracted to refurbish the building and he has hired
friend-of-a-friend Latham to help him. As the play opens,
Stumpy and Latham are hard at work, spackling damaged
walls and applying fresh plaster and primer. Out of work for
the last six months, Latham is grateful to have a job.
When Lexi shows up with color samples, so begins a tale
painted with the brush of seduction, betrayal, and deceit that
will leave you breathless. Who will cash in their paint chips
first and take a fall? And who will be left standing when the
last lies are told?
The Brush of Seduction,
Betrayal, and Deceit
Gloucester Blue is the latest
in Horovitz’s popular series of
Gloucester-based plays that
include North Shore Fish, Park
Your Car in Harvard Yard, Fighting
Over Beverley, and Sins of the
Mother, all of which were first
produced at Gloucester Stage
and have gone on to successful
national runs.
“…a very dark,
very funny play about small-town
class distinctions.”
